So, Michael Wilbon...

But he didn't say end his career. He said he'd hit him as hard as he could.

It's the difference between saying a pitcher should throw at a guys head and saying he should plunk a guy in the back to send him a message.

one's generally accepted the other absolutely is not. it's a fine line, but the line is there.

Just to review the comments in question:

"I'd hit Tom Brady with everything I had as late as I could and take the penalty...

"If I was on the other side my goal would have been for Brady to be helped off the field, by whatever means necessary."

Hitting a QB after the play is over is accepted?

it is to the extent that plunking a guy in the back is. which is to say, it's against the rules and there are consequences for it, but it's absolutely done and is a fundamentally different animal than throwing at a guys head or going at his knees or a helmet to helmet hit with intent to injure.

Well, like it or not... it is the sentiments of many teams around the league. Be glad Brady is not playing in the early 80s.....

Raiders anyone?

Fine/suspension = not accepted

alright, didn't see that part. that certainly changes things.

If I were Brady, I'd pull a Beckett, and response to any "running up the score talk", I'd just say "I don't get paid to make those f*cking decisions."

Or he can tell Colts fans to GFY when he throws his 6th TD of the day just like Beckett did to the Cleveland fans in Game 5.

Well, like anyone on top of the game. Brady has a bullseye tattood on his back.

I seriously hope he doesnt get hurt that way, but if you put it past the NY teams then ya crazy.

Isn't advocating a player to go after an opposing player's knees worse sportsmanship than "running up the score"?

Wilbon does not speak for the Skins. He is a Washington Post sports analyst. That is all.

I am sure yall have ur jackass media comments come out of NE too.

It doesn't mean than fans feel that way or the organization.

Dude I went down the exact same path yesterday. Seriously. LOL At least you didn't drop the bomb you wished we'd play Manning more that way. My bad.

Just for the record, Wilbon is NOT a Skins fan.

I was trying to point out that Wilbon was saying running up the score is bad... so you should have someone go after Brady's knees. I'm not implicating the Skins at all. And come on, this is Boston. We're known for our jackass media (unfortunately).

i guess what i am saying is, we should be enjoying this time. because it's unbelievable. sports is enjoyment for me. so i hate to see people getting bent out of shape trying to vilify every guy in the media for whatever perceived slights, real or imaginary.

enjoy the games.

Wilbon is no different than a thug!!

Yeah he is. He carries a pen; not a stick, knife, or gun.

Come on.
What Wilbon is advoacting is injuring a player...taking away his livelihood...THAT is disgraceful!! I wonder if he would be upset if some columnist said that someone should chop of Wilbon's fingers and rip out his voice box, effectively taking away his livelihood..Would he think that was OK?? Apparently by what he has said, he should have NO problem with that at all...he stepped over the line with those comments..Yes, he has ecery right to, but other people have just as MUCH right to as well.

Yeah he is. He carries a pen; not a stick, knife, or gun.

Come on.

He writes for a Washington paper, thus he becomes part of that fan base. He does have a thug mentality for expressing an opinion that harms someone. Now, the conversation of Brady taking on a late hit is on just about every media outlet (HBO, ESPN, journalists) and some dimwitted (there are a few) or overly hyped lineman may think its ok to put a late hit on Brady. It will cost that person $$$$$$$$$$ in fines and possible suspension. As much as Goodall is probably not pleased with the Patriots, he would be 100X more upset if someone intentionally took a hit on Brady.

I heard his comments, and I like Wilbon. He didn't say "go after his knees". He is advocating blitzing Brady, hitting him hard, to send a message that the Pats should call off the dogs in a blowout. If you think it's okay for the Pats to run it up, then you would have to expect that the opposing team, if pissed off, would blitz Brady and perhaps hit him late.

What I took from Wilbon's comments was not that he was advocating ending Brady's livelihood, his season, or taking out his knees. He said he'd make sure Brady was helped off the field, not carried out on a stretcher. I took it to mean someone should ring Brady's bell. Again, if the Pats are going to run up the score, there may be consequences they would need to deal with as a result, and Brady getting hit, hard, might be one of them.

Wilbon isn't a thug, he's trying to get viewers and he's trying to be provocative. I'd say he succeeded.
