PATRIOTS TRAINING CAMP Training Camp Day 7

When have they ever cut one of their only 2 experienced players at a position that requires 4 deep getting regular snaps?

Last year they cut the only real nose tackle in camp.

There were posters who insisted Pennel couldn't be cut for the same reason, and his salary was small in comparison.

6.5 is way too much for him.

That's great too hear. I guess he is still 300 lbs ? I'd like to see him gain some weight ...maybe 20-30 more. Hard to do at this point in the year though.
Not quite sure if his frame would hold 320-330 proficiently. I believe he’s more of the Geno Atkins, Warren Sapp, Aaron Donald body type (I.E 6’1-6’2, 280-310 DT type).

A few days ago Lazar was gushing over Sanu saying he was an example to the entire young receiving corps, now he's in danger of getting cut... this isn't ironic to you.
Reports about everyone have been erratic and it's not just with the Patriots. I've noticed conflicting reports across the league. People are seeing different things out there.

Sorry for the question but what about rookie Lb Jennings ? I am not hearing a lot about him...do you hv news ?
I think he's nursing an injury.

I guess I am always still looking for the next great (or i'll take very good) NT.

Absolutely; many of us are still looking for the next Sam Adams/Tony Siragusa NT tandem haha. I’ll guess we’ll have to wait to see how Beau Allen, X. Williams, Guy and Cowart turn out, at least for now.

I was also referring to multiple posters here watching WR drill videos and complaining N'Keal wasn't as quick as our sub-200 pound receivers and therefore "slow."

Pennel was cut because he sucked and the other players were better. What players are better wr3/wr4 than Sanu?
Look if you really want to think Bill belichick will go into a season with 1 experienced WR and cut the guy he traded a second for go ahead but it’s just not going to happen. Especially over 6.5 million.

While he's looked bad out of his breaks, I'll wait until it's game day to complain about him.

Also, if he was doing well against the CB's, there'd be complaints that the secondary is regressing.

Maybe, but he was instrumental in holding Derek Henry to 64 yards in the AFCCG. He was a big pick up for the Cheifs.

I don't remember if this is correct, but I heard rumors like Bennett, that they weren't getting along with the position coaches.

I think it's more a case of recliner chair experts saying he looked bad out of his breaks, especially after I timed one of these examples of "poor footwork" with a stopwatch and he timed better than Sanu who was reportedly the best.

He got injured, that was an opportunity for the boo birds to pile on... now healthy he's had a good day at camp. He needs to stay healthy and keep doing what he's doing and he'll be successful. Any notion he isn't athletic or fast enough is absurd.

Oh yeah and good point, the offense is playing against the best secondary in the NFL.

Pennel was a big contributor to the Chiefs championship run, in hindsight the Pats should have waited on him to get in shape out of camp instead of cutting him for being fat.

Very confused about this Sanu stuff. I'll agree that the 6.5 price tag might be a little rich but.... Just because of a few hype videos and positive articles (before a contract year) did you think he was going to show up as Julio Jones 2.0???

He's a proven veteran with experience as a wr2 -3/4 in multiple offenses..we should expect wr2-3 type of stuff from Sanu not HOF stuff.

I agree, but last year there were a lot of extenuating circumstances that led to a poor passing offense that largely got heaped at the feet of the WR group sucking or possessing no talent... this was overblown and has carried over to this year.

Instead of wasting a 2nd on Sanu last year they should have just used the kids, but they had a QB who was pretty insistent on vets.

Sanu is a WR2 or 3, they aren't hard to find or replace and the Pats have a little depth. Some vets are going to get let go from other rosters, they may actually even have a chance to improve here.

Sanu and Jakobi are interchangeable, difference is Meyers is cheap.

Sanu is Sanu... it doesn't matter if his routes are pretty or whatever the superlatives get heaped on him. He's a good 3 or 4, he's a possession receiver... he's not fast.

The Pats may value his experience but if they were smart they would go with the less expensive youth movement and trade him to a WR desperate team after camp.
I don't disagree about going youth movement here, but...then why did Bill sign Newton if he wasn't going to provide him with some relatively dependable help such as Sanu? I don't see him being traded/waived just yet...

I don't either, I was just spitballing about similarities between Sanu and Meyers. My point was largely financial based but they're no longer hard up for money.

Also Cam isn't super accurate and I think the team wants to give him big targets like Sanu and N'Keal and Meyers... guys he doesn't have to throw into tight windows with, who can win contested balls.

It's not like they haven't done this before.

Last year they cut Ben Watson without a better TE solution, as well as Brian Hoyer with a rookie as backup. Two years ago Brandon Bolden was cut. How much were they saving with him?

They cut Watson because they didn't want to guarantee his salary. Not to mention the asinine suspension the league gave him.

Suspending players for using steroids is asinine or only when they play for us?

Where they are not similar is that Sanu has proven he can go out on the field, run the right routes, run them correctly and produce at a lowwr2/highwr3 level and Meyers hasn’t come close to doing that.

That's where we disagree. In what world is BB going to pay a wr3/wr4 6.5 million?

He could have had Danny "Playoff" Amendola for 70% of that.
