OJ Howard On The Trading Block Per Report

Why do you want to get rid of the best defensive back in football so badly?
There are 10s of 1000s of fans who have already given up on the 2020 season.

Might as well blow it up and get picks.

God forbid they have any patience whatsoever and see how Stid, younger players and 2020 draft picks develop.

These same people would have been writing off the team in 2001, either before the season or the second Bledsoe went down, arguing that Seymour was a wasted pick when stud receivers like David Terrell and Koren Robinson were available and that they might as well get whatever they can for Ty Law and Willie McGinest, the only decent players on the entire team. "Trade Law for Jay Riemersma and a 3rd rounder. We're screwed forever after giving up a pick for Belichick anyways, now we won't be able to pick Joey Harrington."

Ah, Koren Robinson... if ONLY the Patriots had been able to grab that stud. Imagine how many rings they’d have !

I'll say the same thing I did in the summer of 2001.

I will be ok with a 9-7 record as long as progress was demonstrated.

If Stid looks like the real deal and "The Guy" moving forward and young players emerge I'll be tickled to death.

You wouldn't make that trade?
Take a step back and think about what you’re saying for a moment.

Gilmore is under contract for 2 more seasons. He has a large cap charge but is cheap for his position as the best CB in football. You’re trading 2 years of the best CB in football for:

- a 1st round bust who is under contract for no more than those same 2 years (let’s call a spade a spade — if Howard was drafted by the Patriots, half of the board would be calling him a bust).
- a 2nd round pick and a 4th round pick
- zero cap relief in 2020 (and free agency already over); ~20m in cap relief in 2021 when the team is projected to have ~80m in cap space already

You think that’s a good return for the best CB in football? That’s a Bill O’Brien trade.

No. I wouldn’t. Howard, though promising, hasn’t shown much of anything. If he was a Pats 1st rd pick, we’d all be calling him a bust. You want Gilly, you’re gonna have to give me a helluva lot more. We’re talking the DPOY. A guy that eliminates half the field. Let’s save the weak trades for BoB.

I just look at how strong we are in the secondary Gilmore is or is turning 30 we are taking about a second which we don’t have a fourth where you can get a good player or package it to move up or into next year and Howard who physically is more gifted than any tightend we have.
I don’t think Tampa would do it honestly but it’s the most Belichick kind of trade I can think of.
To trade a player a year early who will never have a high of value and most certainly not ever be as dominant as he was last season.
Combine that with the emergence of JC Jackson a stacked secondary and Joejuan Williams being drafted in the second last season.
It makes sense from a team building stand point.

Gilmore for Howard a second and 4th

Gilmore is a proven DPOY. Howard, while he has talent and potential to play well for us, will not make the same kind of impact on the offensive side of the field.

Trade Gilmore and we’re a lot closer to the 6-10 predictions that many are making now.

I don't see how Joejuan sees the field. Too many good corners and safeties ahead of him. See if the Bucs want to take on Joejuan in exchange for Howard.

Tough to trade a player that is looking at a suspension. Did you forget that he was caught with a “large amount f marijuana “

Wrong. Its's up to the NEP if they want to remove him from the reserve/retired list.

Gronk can say he wants to come back all he wants. He is powerless.

I'm just curious. I know Gronk has no control over where he goes if he "unretires." However, if Gronk announces that he is coming out of retirement, can the Patriots simply say sorry you can't? Don't the patriots have to put him on their roster or cut him if he comes out of retirement?

Seems reasonable to think he'll be a candidate for the Harmon role.

What might Gronk, Edelman and Tuney and perhaps a Third fetch from Tampa????

The NEP are not obligated to put him on their roster if he unretires.

Worst case scenario is if BB is being an ass, Gronk could file a petition with Goody for reinstatement. If BB still tells Gronk to F off he could file a grievance with the NFLPA. Thats just PR crap.

Personally I don't see that happening. If Gronk wants to come back, BB will tell Gronk and Rosenhaus to go find a team and he'll try to get a deal done. Just like Skittles/SEA/OAK in 2017

Man...the summer of '01....great times....

If Gronk shows up, the Patriots have to pay him (or cut him or trade him). They can’t hold him hostage indefinitely on some list.

He’s under contract with the Patriots, and the contract works 2 ways. He has to show up to get paid, but if he shows up they have to pay him (or cut him or trade him).

(I believe there is a small window of a couple weeks where they can wait if he comes back in the middle of the season, but they can’t keep him away permanently.)
