Cam Newton released by Panthers

Newton spent all those year taking on linebackers, it literally shorten his career. Unless he changes his style of play his days are numbered. I hope Lamar is paying attention.

Sadly, I was at that game. We lost. All I noticed was him completing passes to wide open receivers and getting 1st downs on defensive holding calls on 3rd & long.
Fortunately, that year's D jelled after a horrible start.
Yeah, except for that Super Bowl thingy...

This requires GM 101 review and analysis... And a circus like atmosphere. Thing is circus can be fun in a dismal downer year so far. Having the guy on the roster has some upside if things work out with Belichick discipline and structure.

Cam Newton came into the league boasting that he was going to become an icon. He should have set his sights on becoming a QB instead.

better for us if he’s not

Jackson doesn’t take on LBs head-on.

c.) We can't afford Cam anyway....

Saying that Cam isn't worth having in place of the mighty Studham is one thing. Saying that were can't free up enough 2020 cap room to sign Cam is another position entirely.
I believe that we can free up enough cap space to afford the $6M-$8M that might be required to acquire Cam (or Dalton or Winston).
==================
CONTRACT

2020
$2M 2020 salary
$20M bonus over 5 years (with as many void years as you want; I would say none)
NLTBE incentive TBD
2020 cap hit would be SIX MILLION
Up the bonus to $25M and the 2020 cap hit is SEVEN MILLION
Up the bonus to $30M and the 2020 cap hit is EIGHT MILLION

2021-2024
These elements of the contract are TBD. They have no effect on the 2020 cap. I would not that I have deferred $16M-$20M of 2020 bonus into years when we have $100M or more of cap space. Maybe that is reasonable, maybe not. But that judgement does not affect whether we can AFFORD Cam in 2020.

Yes, we could get Cam...it is financially possible...but personally, I'd rather just extend Thuney just enough to sign some more FA linebackers and our draft class....then enjoy our cap space next season.

One thing though, if Cam is 100%...it sure would help us at the goal line to have him as a rushing option....

When healthy, Cam's been one of the better quarterbacks in the league despite usually playing with a subpar supporting cast. (After spending his early career making the likes of Kelvin Benjamin look good, his body gave out just in time for the Panthers to put together a pretty good group of skill position players.) He's not Tom Brady but it's time to put Brady out of mind, unless Trevor Lawrence falls into their hands they're not going to find someone who's got the potential to be anywhere close to prime Brady any time soon.

When healthy is, of course, the key word. The guy's body has taken a ton of abuse. And the pandemic makes it impossible for teams to evaluate whether he's in playable shape. I don't think the Patriots will be interested unless he's willing to play on a one year deal for a bargain, and then they won't sign him until they can bring him in for a physical, but they'd be crazy not to at least kick the tires unless they are actively tanking. Stidham wasn't even very good in college.

I get it that Cam acts weird and sometimes selfish and he is not the BB prototypical player and at present he would cost big bucks....

BUT if he would agree to come relatively cheaply (e.g. 13 million for a 1 year prove it deal......

I would like to know why for one year fans would not want him over Stidham. Newton was league MVP and that year he was pretty much unstoppable until the super bowl.
If McDaniels and BB could convince him to be a different type of leader and much less running...the guy's talent is FAR superior to unproven Stidham and certainly career backup Hoyer.

Cam would really make for an exciting an interesting season and would give Stidham one more year to learn and for Pats to decide if they want to go with Stidham long term.
I do think Pats are hoping his price will come down and if it does they will consider signing him

So, I say YES Cam...come here on a inexpensive one year deal, bet on yourself, remake your brand and cash in 2021. At the sometime give us Pats fans excitement and hope for 2020.

The wild card is we don't know what they have in Stidham, I'll trust BB's evaluation over any of ours any day. Maybe he's could be great or maybe not, Im willing to trust BB this year. Maybe TB's gone a year early better than a year late I guess.

My worst nightmare.

I mean, the demographics of who on this forum hates on Cam Newton skew old and conservative. Doesn't mean he isn't an *******, but it is what it is.
uh-oh, racial beancounter identified.

If you can sign Newton for less than you were willing to pay brady.. including the dead money then it's a no brainer.? But the dead money kinda nixes the deal.?

IDK cuz I'm not capologist GM wannabe.

Dead money ain't coming back, so shouldn't really be a concern anyways. Hard to believe they'd bring him in on more than a one year prove-it deal.

FWIW, BB et al. have a ton more data from practice available to them than we do.

Right so dead money gets added to either Brady or Newton contract for this season .?

So sign Newton for less than what Brady was offered . simple... then turn Newton into better version of last year's Brady. Seems doable .o_O

Dead money is literally what it says.. dead money. Think of it as an amount that just decreases the available cap space no matter what. It is an installment of a check that was written long time ago but only now counts against the cap.

I just checked in with MMQB and clicked on a article entitled 5 best landing spots for Cam.

As I begin scrolling down I found myself subconciously thinking don't be the Patriots over and over again.

Sure enough the Pats are #1 on the list, errrrr....
