he got sacked more earlier in his career
that's literally every NFL quarterback until they learn their timing. TB's highest sack total was in his first full season. The problem here is this is a veteran who's suddenly getting sacked nearly twice as much. I'd be jumpy too.

Also the Bengals have a very long track record of undervaluing the OL.

you're really putting in an effort to twist Dalton into something of value.......the Bengals invested pretty good draft capital into their OL over the years.

so what I'm hearing is that when it came to the niners sucking, it was because of Kaepernick, when it cam to the Panthers sucking it was because of Newton, but when the Bengals suck, it was everything else.

No, it was because of Dalton...The dude could always be counted-upon - to commit a turnover or take a sack at the worst possible moment...especially in the POs...uncanny that way...

In the Starting Line-Up
andy Dalton spent most of his career as a consistently above average quarterback. He's no superstar, but he would stabilize the QB position with consistently acceptable performances.

If I'm trying to gameplan an offense, I would 5000 times rather have a limited but consistent performance from my QB and a set of skills I could rely on working most of the time, than a flashy guy who can make big plays but can't do it consistently.

This is also the reason I suspect that Lamar Jackson is going to end up being something of a flash in the pan.

Above average?

In 9 years he has 2 with more than 3700 yards. And 2 with a QB rating over 90.

Basically he has one year in his career which is better than Brady's worse year(2019). And that is with AJ Green.

Dalton was a <60.0% QB over the last 3 years throwing to decent targets and with a decent running game.......he's probably the only QB who was worse in the playoffs than Hoyer......would be a complete waste of time to have here

I thought that was hyperbole. But its pretty much spot on.:headscratch:

Might have dodged a bullet with Dalton. I said this in April 27th

"Agree wholeheartedly.
If we drink the "we thought player x would give us the best chance to win" Koolaid, then the signing of Newton, whom I am NOT a fan of, who be the ultimately BB roll of the dice with some unique personalities. He took a shot on the sulking Albert Haynesworth. Dillon?, Talib? and who here can say that Chad #85 was not a self-promoter?

How many on this site actually believe Stidham is a better QB than Newton? I don't like Netwon at all but if he wins games I will hold my nose.

I would say the odds of a healthy Netwon wins us 2 games this year by himself via pass or run.
I do want to here any He gives us the best chance anymore unless you follow your own preaching.

If they do not get Newton and Stidam wins I will be happy to get my butt kicked but it ain't happening. "

Should have played the lottery that day................................

I'm saddened to hear that Newton has per-game roster bonuses, two of which will be LTBE, and therefore will not have a cap hit equal to the $1.05 million minimum salary for a 10th year player.

(It should still be pretty close to that.)

Good lord, I’m not even able to muster the courage to read past the insanely ignorant takes on page one. Maybe after another pot of coffee :coffee::).

Oh and better believe a lot of folks from this thread are deep down hoping for Cam to implode so their own biases are confirmed. Sad really.

I was a doubter, but I've been nothing but impressed so far. He's shown leadership & skill. He almost dragged the Patriots to a victory after being down 12 with 5min to play - on the road - vs one of the best teams in the league.

I just want him to stay healthy and keep learning...

pats should look re-signing cam newton.

I hate this take that "oh the patriots wont be able to pay him." Starting QB's are expensive especially ones of Cam newtons caliber. At some point Bill is going to have to pay for a QB or we are going to be stuck with the likes of Hoyer and Stidham. and even if Stidham is a superstar, look at what he is going to command. look at what Jimmy G commanded.

the chances are slim to none of ever getting the cap relief a guy like brady gave them for his talent level

I couldn't find my post in this thread for some reason--I wrote it when the thread first appeared but I guess I didn't post it. What I said was is I think signing Newton would be a great idea, I think he'll work hard and be successful, for the first two games of the season at a minimum.

So yeah, pretty much nailed this one.

I can't speak to everyone's mindset but I know from the conversations I was having at the time that very few, if any, Pats fans considered Newton could be signed to an affordable 'prove it' type deal. The cap hit was certainly driving my thinking at the time. New England had virtually no cap room when this thread was started. The idea of making wholesale cuts in order to afford bringing in a rental QB who most folks envisioned having a 1st year cap hit of 18-21 million and another few million in dead cap after the one year rental seemed insane. If the question was "Would you sign Newton to a vet minimum deal with incentives to no more than $8M?" I think I would have laughed and said "Sure, let's get Amari Cooper and Emmanuel Sanders in here on vet minimum deals while we're at it."

in response to:

This team cannot currently afford a $20mm QB.

this was my comment in March:

as for affording a 20M QB, you are only correct in that currently they can't afford a 20M cap hit

the majority in this thread said 'no thanks' without even getting to the money

It's easy to discount now but in mid March the Pats salary cap crunch was right up there with Brady leaving as a topic of Pats discussion. IIRC Miguel was reporting the Pats as barely having the vet minimum available, the lack of maneuvering room was a given in every roster discussion. Viewed through that lens (and keeping in mind the OP ended with "Also, is it possible with cap?") outside of the knuckle draggers, I think the cap implications could easily be construed as a given in most posts made on any roster driven subject. In other words, comments from that time frame need to be considered contextually.

On the other hand, if your point is that we sometimes see some less than enlightened. perhaps even agenda driven, comments here then you are completely correct. I would be less than honest if I didn't admit there may be posts here from folks whose opinions are driven by non team/football considerations that I just did not bother reading simply because of who made them.

To be fair, I think some of the concern was valid if you look at his injury history. I wanted to sign Newton pretty early, but I never predicted it would have turned out this well based on the first two games.
