Reconstruction actually worked really well under Grant, but elections in the south where literal violent insurgencies determined the outcome of local elections and the election of Rutherford B. Hayes through a backroom deal sealed its fate. Eric Foner's book Reconstruction: America's Unfinished Revolution is a masterwork on the era, strongly recommend it.

I just think had the union "occupied" the south the way we as a country have with japan, South Korea and germany in the passed then perhaps alot of our history would be differnt for the better

After all it was the confederates who decided to succeed and fight a war to win that right and in losing had no right to any such demands.

I dont believe we all should be on the same side but when you believe your side is so in the right that youd literally kill in the name of those beliefs you've lost your damn mind

It's not data that's recorded in vital statistics as a matter of course. What we can say is there's a substantial disparity between male and female death rates, and differential smoking rates (men smoke at significantly higher rates than women everywhere in the world, and those differences grow at older ages) as well as more exposure to work that impacts respiratory function (mining, heavy industry, construction, forestry, etc.) is probably a major factor in that disparity. But very difficult to know the exact impact without research since smoking and work aren't considered comorbidities in vital stats.

I've identified as Democrat my whole life but I cant say with a straight face anymore that I'm a liberal.

These terms have changed even in the past 15 years.

Two party system should just go extinct already.

The Union did occupy the South and carried out a brutal crackdown on, for example, the Ku Klux Klan. That was Radical Reconstruction. A ton of black men served in Congress or in State legislatures during the late 1860s and early 1870s, for example.

But then those policies were pared back and the Redeemers got free rein and Reconstruction was completely ended by Hayes (who was elected in a backroom deal) and after that Jim Crow became the order of the day.

Seriously, read Foner's book. Reconstruction gets glossed over in your standard high school American history as it sits between the Civil War and the Gilded Age, but it's really one of the most fascinating (and ultimately depressing) periods of our nation's history.

I think him thinking about running as a Democrat in 2000? Should be all the proof anyone needs that he doesnt care about the parties or their so called beliefs.

I think the man takes TOO much ******** but that doesnt mean hes a blameless marauder like this Tommy boy poster apparently feels.

Imagining anyone's politics on a horizontal liberal to conservative spectrum that maps onto political party, as Americans like to do, is silly. Plenty of conservative black people, for example, who nevertheless vote Democratic. Politics can't be mapped to a spectrum, most peoples' politics are totally incoherent, and party identification is often historically determined. I'm an anarcho-communist who thinks electoral politics is generally crap, but also a practicing (left) Catholic with leanings towards traditional liturgical preferences. What am I? A conservative or a liberal? Democrat or Republican?

Japan used to be a nation of such pride that death was the only solution to defeat and not surrender.

50 years of American ideation changed an entire history worth of belief.

Trump will say whatever he needs to look good. He has convictions certainly but they are by no means rooted in a specific ideology.
