Hmm let’s see, should we pay peanuts for a backup qb familiar with the system or paying more for guys like Winston and dalton who seem to like giving the ball to the other team, Winston especially?
“Paying peanuts” should be the official title of this offseason.

You're making it sound like we passed on Brady and Brees when we're actually passing on Andy Dalton, Derek Carr, and the corpse of Cam Newton--all 3 at literally 10 times the price of Hoyer plus trade compensation, none of whom could possibly put this roster over the hump.

Unless you're talking about Jameis, who will probably get a bigger contract than we think.
I’ll take my chances with Winston on a one year prove it deal than 34-year-old journeyman Brain Hoyer.

If Stidham isn’t the second coming of Mahomes, this is going to be a long season and one excruciatingly long rebuild.

To not bring in a guy with talent to at least compete for the starting job is just nauseating.

Hoyer isn’t competition in the slightest, and if he is, we’re in big, big trouble...

I thought you meant this 1.

Hoyer presents not unlike the ghost of Tom Brady there to support and guide Master Jarrett.

I hate to break it to you, but we're not going to be very good on offense this year no matter who the QB is. Why spend big on a crappy band aid QB right now just because he's marginally better than the guys we got on the cheap when next year looks much more promising?

I truly believe Stidham or Hoyer would win us roughly the same number of games (read: not that many) as Dalton or Carr while not putting us further into cap hell.

Winston I could get behind the idea of, but like I said, he's probably not as cheap as you think he is, and has a lower floor than even the current Patriots QB roster.

One thing to consider when thinking about how many QBs the Patriots might carry on their 55 man roster in 2020 are the new practice squad eligibility rules under the new CBA. The PS increases to 12 players and now 2 of those spots are available for veterans who would not have been eligible previously. It’s now conceivable that a veteran like Brian Hoyer could pocket his $2million after being cut from the 55 and be signed to the PS for the season. He could even be activated to the 48 man game roster twice.

This is nauseating. I am hopeful that Stidham is not just be handed the job. How about some real camp competition?

Winston has no suitors and no starting job opportunities.

If Bill Belichick calls with a chance to compete for the starting gig on a one year deal, I’m pretty sure that’ll look pretty tempting.

Hoyer is the ultimate bandaid. He does nothing to move the needle and if Stidham isn’t the savior, this season is pretty much up in smoke.

You need to be bold here and take some risk. Hoyer is far from it.

All this is doing, is reiterating how dumb it was to let Brady walk. No succession plan at all in place.

If Brady is Ewan McGregor Obi-Wan Kenobi then Hoyer is Old Ben Kenobi, not that great anymore but knows a thing or two, good enough to teach the upstart what he needs to know and will probably get killed off after one movie.

What is the upside of having a guy like Hoyer on the roster? If you don't have a proven QB, wouldn't it be better to continually carry unproven guys with potential until you finally find your guy? What do the Patriots gain by having a known NFL journeyman occupy a spot that an unknown guy with potential could take. You know what Hoyer is, and there's no future in that.
waste of a roster spot. You could hire him as an assistant QB coach and his 2million salary would not count against the cap.

Ideal: Sign Newton, BB gets him back to MVP level, trade for Cooks and draft 2 TE's high in the draft and go all guns blazing on O.

What do we do? Sign Hoyer. Cool.

We know what Hoyer is, he’s a backup. He’s cheap, and he knows the system. I still expect another qb in the draft but hoyer can be valuable to helping jarrett next season.

Just like Brady’s first full year as the starter (02) we drafted a youngster in Rohan Davey but also kept veteran backup Damon Huard to help the young QBs.

why can't they just hire Hoyer as a coach?
There was a report last fall that Hoyer doesn’t want to coach. It makes sense that he doesn’t want to put in twice as many hours for 5% of the pay.

Get ready for the most boring offense since 1993. Ugh, zero quality talent on this offense. Yuck! Let’s hope my prediction of 5-11 turns into 3-13 so we can land Trevor Lawrence and actually become a good offense again.

5 years of awful drafting on offense led us to this point. No more Brady to mask the weaknesses

The 2001 season says hello.

What does Bill value in the qb position? I would say it would decision making/limiting turnovers. Winston statistically was the worst qb in this regard.

Stidham better be the second coming of Patrick Mahomes, because with the amount of QBs available, to simply sign the corpse of Brian Hoyer and call it a day is just puke inducing.
It's like you just started watching/following this team?

Amount of QB's? Who exactly are you talking about? Winston?

You really think he'd be able to run this offense??

You think he'd be better without Evans, Brate, Howard, Godwin, Jones, Miller etc??

Not trying to be a DH but your post just doesn't make sense and reeks of just wanting to do something for the sake of it. Again like You just started following the team?

Copeland was the 2020 Allan Page award winner for his work in the community.

He took 300 kids at Christmas and gave them $200 to shop with.

That's less than a buck apiece!!!!*

*Yes, I get it being $200 each

he's probably pretty pliable.......and likely learned how to make avocado ice cream

Nope...there is no benefit in Hoyer helping Stidham until it's certain Stidham is the guy. If Stidham is garbage there's no benefit in occupying a spot with a guy to help him. Continually go with 3 unknowns until you find your guy. Until we find a qb, Hoyer is just wasting a spot.

Lots of teams make this mistake. They have a young guy, and they bring in a washed up vet to mentor him. Young guy flops and you spent that entire time wasting a spot on your roster. Fill your qb roster spots with potential until you find your guy. At that point you can bring a Hoyer type in.

It’s like you just started reading this thread. Yes, Winston. I’ve said it in two posts already.

And where’s the “system” and “this offense” stuff coming from as an excuse?

You mean the system that’ll now be changing now that Brady is gone and we now have a mobile QB with a different skillset than Brady? You seriously think the same system is going to be used?

Highly doubt they’re just going to take what Brady did for 20 years, insert Stidham and call it a day....
