They should have given him a multiple year contract last year coming off of Super Bowls. Because they would have gotten more out of a Tom-declining than a QB that is green and only now learning how to read NFL defenses.
A lot of people underestimate how much Brady has become lined into the DNA of the Patriots. I see comments here challenging people's fandoms. We need to appreciate the total synthesis between our favorite team and Brady's 20 years here. Now I've been through the Sullivans and Fairbanks, Erhardt, Ron Meyer, Rod Rust, Kiam, McPherson, etc., but even I can't get out of my mind the fact that essentially, Brady and Belichick are the Patriots. Asking me to stop identifying with the guy--after seeing his gutsy performances year after year, the class with which he performed, the abuse he took from the NFL, the doubts about his abilities--and I can't. I watched him play live every year in opposing stadiums (Buffalo, NY Jets, Pittsburgh, Miami), I was once physically attacked by 5 guys for wearing his jersey (and saved from it by my friend & a horde of Bills fans), & I heard the totally ridiculous chants "Brady is a lady," & my god it's been an incredible, weird, unbelievable 20 years.
Please, I don't want to hear criticism of Patriots fans working through the mixed emotions here.
Belichick is indeed ruthless. Give Brady the 2 or 3 year contract last year, he's better than anyone you're going to find in that same period, and let him retire as a 44 year old.
