My response to the Lynch rumor is that this is getting fun. Did anyone expect a clean fight when two men as competitive as Tom Brady and Bill Belichick have a stare down?

There’s still cap room for Brady. The $5 million includes the acceleration of the $6.75 million into 2020 if Brady doesn’t re-sign before the new league year. Thus, their effective cap is actually closer to $12 million. With the bulk of the 2020 payout being in the form of a signing bonus (which is what Brady and the Pats have down in all his extensions), they can definitely fit a Brady extension into the available cap space.

You then reach agreement on a multi year deal with Thuney which will lower his cap number $8 million or so, trade Duron Harmon, and get Gostkowski to turn a bulk of his salary into easy to earn but still (because he was hurt last season) NLTBE bonuses and you have $16 million additional cap space to acquire a weapon and a DL fatty. Suddenly, you’re a better team than you were at the end of last season, and the draft is still to come.

I really doubt it was about contract or 'weapons' for brady. Its just a battle of egos ,wearing out over 20 yrs and the prospect of being courted in free agency .

Agreed but I find it disingenuous to speak out both side of his mouths on the matter IF he knew all along what he was doing.

I can’t stand it when people say/write that it was the same team that went 16-0 other than Brady because that is total BS.

The 2007 defense was aging and was running on fumes by the end of the year. Bruschi was a shadow of his former self by 2008. Seau was gone, until they brought him back out of desperation because of injuries. An aging Harrison missed the last month and a half of the season with a thigh injury. Adelius Thomas went down for the rest of the season week 10. There was also significant turnover in the secondary with Samuel, Wilson and Gay gone, replaced by two rookies. Wheatley played pretty well but missed the last two months of the season. they struggled so much in the secondary that Deltha O’Neal played in all 16 games, despite being so God-awful that he never played another down in the NFL.

On offense, I’m sure that most of you remember that Cassel was so pathetic in the preseason that many speculated that he wouldn’t make the final roster. As we all know, BB lost the league MVP in week 1 and was forced to hand the keys to the guy who basically hadn’t played a real game since high school. On the fly adapted the offense to Cassel and turned him into a second round pick after winning 11 games with him. You may also recall that other than 2010, Cassel was terrible the rest of his career under coaches not named William Belichick. They still had Moss and Welker but Stallworth was gone and they had nobody at WR3 or 4 (and don’t try to throw out Gaffney, he sucked b*lls). Watson was their leading pass catcher at TE with a whopping 20 recs for 200 yds. Maroney played 3 games before being placed on IR. Neal missed the first 6 games of the season in the PUP list.

So please stop it with this notion that maybe they should’ve won even more in 2008 because of the team that almost went 19-0 the year before. It’s a pathetic lie. That was a masterful job of coaching by BB in 2008. Simply holding the team together after losing Brady week 1 should have earned him some coach of the year should have earned him some coach of the year votes.

It was essentially the same team. Samuel was the biggest loss. Bruschi was a shadow of his former self in 2005, Seau was done anyway, and Harrison was on his last legs. The defense was still good and the offense was still very talented. The team was still good enough to win a Super Bowl, but they lost Brady. His loss resulted in 5 more losses against a very easy, and favorable schedule.

Agreed. There were costly GM errors.
Sole reason? Be serious. Missing Gronk or missing The Squirrel helped miss rings.
On the other hand GM roster moves enabled the 6 rings they have.
And non GM fault issues like injuries, q.v. in game injuries 2007 cost rings as did player failures q.v. Welker drop 2011.

Awful drafts from 2004-2009, big misses in FA, refusing to bring in a guy who can stretch the field at WR from mid-2010 until 2013 (Lloyd perhaps being the exception), bad drafts from 2014-current resulting in the offensive talent being almost completely depleted, curious trades/releases. These are all personnel related issues that contributed to the team not being good enough to get it done in those “also ran” years. That falls on the HC. But yes, he did get it right as well.

Cool. Shall we have a talk about the teams around him then in 2005, 2006, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2017, and 2019 and take a closer look at the personnel those seasons? Each and every single one of them featured some very curious and bad personnel issues. The fact stands. BB’s decisions likely played a role in Brady not winning more. Finally, chew on this: the man that you’re defending HIMSELF has even said that players win the games on the field while coaches can only lose them. You think he was full of ****?
