Thanks.

I’m not talking about a huge chance here of society breaking down. I’ve been watching videos and reading accounts from Italy...right now things are bad but manageable. What concerns me is that the cases are still growing exponentially every day. As one person said in the news lately a “nosedive” is coming.

It’s not unreasonable to think that Italy could experience major problems with police responses and desperate citizens looking to survive or take advantage of this type of situation. The US is likely to follow Italy’s path. I already have safety concerns enough that I was on the verge of purchasing a handgun/safe before all of this happened, so this would certainly serve as something to push that decision over the edge.

I don’t expect an apocalypse army raiding the streets. I do expect robbers and criminals to be bolder.
Sounds like you've been thinking about this for a while and you're a smart dude, so you've considered all the consequences.

So you thinking 44 Magnum, to make sure robbers don't feel lucky?

$10 per sheet?

I’m going to buy my first firearm today. Have no idea what Italy will become...
Below is what Italy has become while we're thinking about buying guns and ammo. Owning a firearm is your right, of course. I've thought about it myself but can't conceive of a situation in which using it would have a positive result. Maybe someday.

Jesus guys. I’m going to buy a handgun in case everything derails, which is much more of a possibility than it was a month ago. I’ve been taking a gun safety course for months.

Law enforcement and our most reliable institutions may be in jeopardy in a month. Why is everyone acting like I just decided to sacrifice my first born? I’m all for gun control too, but why do I feel this strong sentiment of disdain because I want a handgun.

I own more guns and ammo than my local police department. Live in Ohio where I can own and possess anything I want. Having a weapon and knowing how to safely use it can be critical if the SHTF.

That was sarcasm, right?

I thought the use of the words 'reasonably' and 'should' made the sardonic intent of the post obvious enough.

When someone breaks into your house at 3am and are downstairs and S&W is in your hand .

anyway we are facing an incredible moment...just some examples:

Romania declares a state of emergency

Holland , Belgium, Portugal , Ireland all schools closed

Denmark and Poland close borders

Germany has announced that it will close its borders with France, Switzerland and Austria from Monday morning

Spain has also prohibited all journeys that are not dictated by force majeure

France has decided to close all "non-essential" public places, including restaurants, bars and places of worship. Canton Ticino (Switzerland>) has also announced the intensification of measures to contain coronavirus, while the army is ready to take the field to the aid of hospitals. All restaurants, bars and shops, with the exception of pharmacies and food stores, will be closed.

Wien (Austria) follows the Italian model and closes shops, bars, restaurants, limiting citizens' movements. The Czech Republic actually goes into quarantin

Greece also closes everything. After schools and universities, Athens government also stops unnecessary commercial activities, cinemas and theaters.

Anyone criticizing you for wanting to feel safe and pursuing it in a responsible way are way out of line.

Lifetime chances of about 0.32%. Odds are about 1 in 6000, approximately twice as likely as getting struck by lightning in your lifetime. So proportionally speaking you should prepare for a home invasion twice as much as you prepare for being hit by lightning.

I live in FL, I'm more worried about getting hit by lightning than a home invasion.

Using stats and probability is certainly a logical way to feel safe.

So is gun ownership.

Agreed. I would advocate for more than a just a handgun. If you don’t know how to reload under pressure somewhat skillfully you could be in big doo doo. Plus rifles are just more effective all around. This is what you practice with pistols as backup and rifle primary.

Funny how in a shtf scenario you find out who is what and who lives the pew pew life. Pretty neat.

At some point I'll probably look into buying a tactical shotgun.

Whoever is in the house had best hope it's me with that S&W coming to investigate and not the Rottie or my wife with the Mossberg. I'm far more likely to at least ask a question or two first, the dog and the bride...not so much.
