Using stats and probability is certainly a logical way to feel safe.

So is gun ownership.
Another way is to study and research areas where you are thinking about buying a house or living. I've always made it a habit to visit local PD wherever I've lived to find out types and frequency of crimes in the area.

Well said. And if you (and others) sleep better feeling like you’re protected, then that matters for a lot.

Never been a gun person but never had an issue with any responsible gun owners. I am starting to rethink my need for having a weapon. Although at this moment, I’m not even sure if safety classes have been put on hold.

Imma start researching.

Living in an area where people don’t lock doors, don’t lock vehicles, and has MANY nosy old ladies nearby : even better than owning a gun.

Whoever is in the house had best hope it's me with that S&W coming to investigate and not the Rottie or my wife with the Mossberg. I'm far more likely to at least ask a question or two first, the dog and the bride...not so much.
I think my father in law has the Mossberg 590A1. Nice toy

Thats another way to reduce the chances of being a victim, sure.

I don't have a gun...but I have a little league sized Louisville slugger bat....perfect for close quarter combat. I'd be cracking knee caps, testicles, and finishing people off with a skull crushing blows...

I think people would rather get shot than face me with a bat and my pitbull in the dark.....with us having the high ground.

Its times like this I'm glad my father instilled a little "survivalist" in me in terms of keeping a month supply of food, TP, paper towels, water, etc.

All of the hoarding and profiteering that has been going on is disgusting, I hope they prosecute people for it in places its illegal. Fortunately Ebay and Amazon have finally stepped up and are shutting seller accounts down who do it

We live among savages lol

My wife hates that I have one. We live in a very safe town and a very nice hood. Our CoP is awesome as are his LE team.

However we had a series of home invasions a few years ago- including the house next door. Occurred over a 3 week stretch. No one was killed but a couple of housewives were roughed-up.

Needless to say she felt a lot better with me working from home and my 9mm close by.

368 deaths reported in Italy today

I wish people here would start taking it seriously instead they’re out getting **** faced at bars all night
Those bar pics in Southie yesterday were disgusting.

This thread has taken a concerning turn.

I'm not sure this is the best time for Pats fans to go out and get guns.

Andy Dalton as QB + gun in the household = very dangerous.

I'm sure you can get into a class. Few weeks wait.

anyway we are facing an incredible moment...just some examples:

Romania declares a state of emergency

Holland , Belgium, Portugal , Ireland all schools closed

Denmark and Poland close borders

Germany has announced that it will close its borders with France, Switzerland and Austria from Monday morning

Spain has also prohibited all journeys that are not dictated by force majeure

France has decided to close all "non-essential" public places, including restaurants, bars and places of worship. Canton Ticino (Switzerland>) has also announced the intensification of measures to contain coronavirus, while the army is ready to take the field to the aid of hospitals. All restaurants, bars and shops, with the exception of pharmacies and food stores, will be closed.

Wien (Austria) follows the Italian model and closes shops, bars, restaurants, limiting citizens' movements. The Czech Republic actually goes into quarantin

Greece also closes everything. After schools and universities, Athens government also stops unnecessary commercial activities, cinemas and theaters.

We should actually be doing that right now, as close to a complete shutdown as possible. We're still 10 days ahead of the curve, 10 days ahead of where you guys are right now.

So much depends on the actions that will or will not be taken in the next 24 hours/few days. Our only hope now depends on the level of action taken by our local and state governments.

I don't know Biden is old and screwing up his talking points every other speech? Do you see younger candidates do that every other speech?

Reagan did the same thing his 2nd term.

You approach 80 it happens. That is a fact.

Why are you trying to defend him by making this a Dem/GOP issue? I'm not.

Because November is a binary choice, and the other guy is the one who has utterly failed.

Biden, Weld, Charlie Baker, Sanders, Pete, Amy, any of them - will surround themselves with more competent people.

Biden wasn't my personal first, second, or third choice - neither was Sanders - but whatever. November is binary.

So as of now, what do you think the odds of this affecting week 1 are?

I mean if summer camps are canceled/delayed, would that necessarily mean we wouldn't have week 1 in early Sept?

The bride favors the 930, she has a balky shoulder from a a soft tissue injury so the semiautomatic is preferable to the pump action. Up until a couple of years ago she and her sister used to trap shoot on a fairly regular basis.

Scientists are now fighting the virus with guns.

At some point I'll probably look into buying a tactical shotgun.

I laugh at the tactical part at times but I’m not a huge shotgun fan but I can see how they see useful. Trust me though, as much as black rifle scary talk there is, an AR platform is outstanding. Play with one sometime if you can and you will see why.

That makes a lot of presumptions, PP2. And by saying people will raid my house for more TP, that is kind of making light of this/building a straw man. You don’t know where I live, how much my home is worth, what the surrounding neighborhoods are like, how much previous criminal activity has happened in my neighborhood or at my home itself. And you don’t know how much experience I have from training courses, which precautions I’ll take ensure safety, etc.

I do not mean to make light of your situation and certainly retract anything I say that is uncalled for.

I do argue that acquiring gun(s) is not a realistic solution, or the proper response to the tsunami that is about to hit us.

There are so many things that can go wrong- and the stark proof is that the number of gun accidents far exceeds the numbers of invaders/burglars/baddies successfully deterred or neutralized by guns. Over 1,000 kids are killed, and 5,000 injured by self inflicted accidents, every year.

The Bureau of Justice Statistics reports about 100 homicides per year across America that happen in the course of household burglaries. That’s less than 1 percent of U.S. homicides. Yeah, that’s about one-180th of the 18,735 gun suicides that occurred in America.

That is not to say that you should just stand by and let anyone break in- there are many ways you can guard against that.

Jesus guys. I’m going to buy a handgun in case everything derails, which is much more of a possibility than it was a month ago. I’ve been taking a gun safety course for months.

Law enforcement and our most reliable institutions may be in jeopardy in a month. Why is everyone acting like I just decided to sacrifice my first born? I’m all for gun control too, but why do I feel this strong sentiment of disdain because I want a handgun.

Just a suggestion...if you're talking about HOME protection, particularly with kids in the house, you may want to get a shotgun instead.
