My suspicion is he'd come here on a massive discount because he wants his shot at a ring. That discount won't be enough to make up for the loss of Brady but it will allow us to compete more in FA.

I may be alone in being a fan of Rivers. I certainly prefer the GOAT to Rivers but Rivers wouldn't be a bad consolation prize at the right price.

We're basically having that conversation this year or in 2 years, imo. Stidham is an unknown, it'd be cool as heck if panned out as a solid starter but that's exactly why you bring in a proven vet who has naked fingers.

I genuinely like Rivers and I think he'd take a team-friendly contract to come here. Tom's my hero but if he wants a change of scenery or is focused on hitting the 300+ million career earning mark and goes somewhere else I'd be happier with Rivers @ a discount than any realistic alternative.

I hear you. I suppose it comes down to the idea of selecting another higher round pick in the draft and saving the money, or using 20m or so on a proven veteran.

A team-friendly Rivers contract, to me, is 10-15m tops. If he's serious about wanting to play for a contender he's going to take a little as possible while saving face.

If he wants north of that it's a pass from me, dog. In fact in a scenario where Brady is gone and Rivers wants more than that I'd rather trade out of the first round this year, and put ourselves into a better position for 2 years down the road and see what we've got with Studarm in 2020.

Rivers just moved his wife and 100 children to Florida. He never has played for a team where it snows. He throws interceptions at critical moments. He's older and has a temper problem. Bringing in a bridge QB with the Pats at this juncture would serve no useful purpose; if Brady leaves the wise choice would be to go with Stidham and a rookie in camp because either way this is not a Super Bowl team.

Even the high end (15m) would place him as the lowest paid starter in the league who’s not on a rookie deal, so it would be great if he’d be willing to go for it.

I think that he’s got some obvious flaws like his tendency to throw a pick at the worst time, but he also has some pluses, like being a fiery competitor, and playing through injury. He’s a seasoned vet who’s been around, so if Belichick can get him to take care of the ball a bit, he might be the best choice remaining if Brady moves on.

Of course, there’s the all-important cost factor as well as the number of teams willing to bid on his services. I’m not as much of a believer as fnord in regards to him taking a heavy discount to play with a competitor, and I’m not even sure how much we’d be seen as an actual competitor without Brady to begin with, but it’s a subject that’s at least worthy of discussion in my opinion. But, like I mentioned, we’re back to the debate about paying a vet vs. potentially drafting another rookie/giving Stidham the keys, which is fine, but I’m not sure that we’ll be able to agree on what the proper approach is.

Not really contesting any of this, he just seems like he is a malcontent and he has been around for 16 seasons which is a lot of wear and tear.. always thought a guy like Mariota may be a better fit, not because he has won so much, but because coming here may resurrect his game to a higher level than it currently is and increase his value in the future..

Rivers will be 39 in December, and with his injury history not sure I would like this signing..

I've always like Rivers' fire. He's been a decent, sometimes really good, QB in the league for a while now. I think Rivers would do well on the Pat's because I think the Pats would reel him in a bit, avoiding a lot of those head-scratching interceptions he's been throwing these past few years. I think the problem is that Rivers still thinks an make the throws he made when he was younger but now can't. I think the Pats would play to his veteran strengths.

I worry that coming in after Brady would be a disaster though. Since Rivers is a vet he won't get the same leash from us fans as Stidham would. If they throw Stidham in we will all accept that growing pains are inevitable and will be willing to put up with more mistakes, chalking it up to the learning process. It may even be kind of fun watching a young QB grow. Rivers, on the other hand, will bring with him a glimmer of hope we may make it to the playoffs. We'll grow real weary of Rivers if he continues with the kind of play he has been offering the past few seasons. He'll cost us games because of arrogance and not because it's his first year starting.
