Monday Night Football Colts Saints Brees Stat pad fest game thread

Again, the moment you get to "They still", as a method of dismissal, about a play that was a game decider in a game's waning moments, you're just looking for a way to lessen the import of the call, which is senseless. If the refs don't blow the call, there's an old time extra point level field goal that almost certainly ends the game in the Saints favor. There's nothing else. There's no "woulda, coulda, shoulda". It's the end of the story.

We all make the dismissal mistake on occasion, but it's bad form on our part when we do it.
It was a terrible call, i’ll never deny that. But the saints put themselves in a position to where they NEEDED a call by the refs to ice the game, and when they didnt get said call, they proceeded to implode and lose the game

Thats what happens when you take the game out of your own hands and put it in the refs instead to decide your fate.

No one remembers the questionable play calling right before the non-PI either where payton called a pass play instead of a run that resulted in an incompletion/stopped clock which gave the rams more time and an extra TO to drive for a tying FG in regulation

I honestly like Brees a lot as a player and person. Yes he is a bit of a stat padder but so are most QBs.

Anyone questioning the difference between him and Brady only need to watch how Brees reacted when he thought he got the record just now and how Brady reacted when he got 50 TDs.

That being said Brees is underrated all time. I put him above Peyton for sure and just outside the top 5.
Huh? You have Brees that high? What’s your top 10?

Congrats to Brees. Definitely one of the good guys.

Great QB and leader as well as a community guy.

Will look up his stats in and out of dome to see how he fares vs the all time greats. Not sure why he’s not mentioned in the top 5 of all time. He’s got the ring with some really good number.

It happens, but not like that. That was a TD and even the rams CB admitted it. Look at the pass , its perfect. That wins the game. There are lots of questionable calls, but that call was without question and changed the game forever. That call changed the playoff outcome and change even if you fought the best team. That undermined football... and makes everyone think.
Is this a real SB or a fake one, and that's not good for the sports.
Look we all know it was a horrendous call and a TD perfect throw, but it's not for us to overcome, again and again, its for them to call the right call and the Rams to overcome.
Why are we martyrs all of a sudden that have to overcome?
You have any idea what this forum would be like if Edelman was destroyed like that and you missed the SB and Brady at 40 missed his 6 SB? show some empathy to your gate brothers
We all know the worst SB for Goodell is Pats vs Saints then crazy boo when he's on stage and embarrassing for him,, we would not be surprised if that wasn't called in from NY

seriously

but we move on

Good luck in the year Pats we are pulling for you

The "don't put your fate in the hands of the refs" argument is silly. Your fate is in the hands of the refs every play. If the refs can't competently officiate the game, then fair competition is not possible.

All these things can be true about Brees, but let’s think about all the great QBs all-time, which is over the last 100 years, and consider what a small group that is. You basically can’t have a blemish because there are about 15-20 QBs who did amazing things but can’t all be in the top 5.

1 Super Bowl win and 0 MVP awards is certainly a tough obstacle to get you you to top 5 all-time.
Being consensus ranked 3rd or 4th best QB of your sole era would certainly make it tough.
Never being considered the best QB playing would make it a very difficult argument.

Brady
Montana
Graham
Starr
Unitas

I cannot find a rational argument that Brees can be placed above any of these quarterbacks, since you must adjust stats for the era and rules whereby these guys played. 4 are QBs who led historic dynasties and were considered the very best in the game (Starr, possibly not the absolute best, but certainly the most clutch and one of the best). Unitas redefined the position. I haven’t even gotten into some of the earlier players like Baugh, Jurgensen, etc.

If you take out all-time and replace with post-merger, it’s a dog fight after Brady and Montana. Staubach, Manning, Elway, Marino, Young, Warner, Favre (not my taste personally on Favre), etc. are all noteworthy. Many who watched Tarkenton and Fouts would argue both dominated their eras like Brees. But the bigger problem is that the newer generation are likely to make Brees’s bread and butter (statistical dominance, particularly completion %) look closer to the norm. And QBs are playing much longer. Wilson is likely to surpass Brees for career legacy at some point; many have Rodgers ranked above him. A second ring would certainly help tremendously for Brees.

Brees is as close as you can get to God in NOLA.. remember the year after they won the Superbowl XLIV , I was there for Mardi Gras on Sunday, if I remember correctly, he was on the Bacchus Float with Payton..

Prior to the Parade starting he went into Tipitina's on the Corner of Napolean and Tchoupatoulis and the crowd massed trying to get at him.. when he got on the float the crow went crazy.. it pretty much set the tone for Mardi Gras that year....

Last year after the piss poor officiating they experienced, it was pretty much the same as many float riders were dressed as blind referees as the bashing of Roger and his minions.. I have beads and throws that testify to their disdain for that cluster...

While College Football reigns in much of the South, in NOLA Brees and Payton are god like in their stature as are the Saints in General.. their passion is respected, and they generally respect Pats fans as after their "Bounty Gate" scandal as they understand the idiocy of Roger and the NFL hierarchy... Saints Fans and Pats Fans are kindred spirits due to inequities of NFL incompetence and "discipline"..

For Saints fans it does not matter where Brees winds up on lists, he will always be at the top of any QB list for them.. last night he went 29/30 that is pretty freaking remarkable.

It's amazing at how obvious the Pats flaws are (more so then normal) when you watch another team play. Our WR get no separation and I think opposing defenses figured it out and Brady will not see many zone defenses anymore. Scary thought. Looked to me the Colts were in zone all night and Brees picked them apart.

When somebody tells you Brees is the GOAT, not Brady, my response,
"Can I have what you're drinking? Brees has had 8 seasons where his team was .500 or worse, Brady has none. Brees has one season in which he won more than one playoff game. Brady has 10 seasons in which he won more than 1 playoff game..."

Love Brees and think he has done good things for the city. And happy the Saints crushed Indy - hopefully it will make their scumbag owner snort more coke and shoot up more heroin with an AIDS infected hooker.

Anyway, back on topic...Brees is a great QB but I am one who believes you cannot compare a QB who plays and practices(!) indoors to someone playing and practicing outdoors and in the cold. No comparison in my mind. Brees is fantastic, don't get me wrong, but he can't hold Brady's jock strap.

The sour grapes about Brees almost certainly being the one to retire holding that record is a bad look.
No sour grapes here, I like Brees.

Fact is TB has 2 seasons + worth of TDs over the next player because of his stellar postseason career.

There's a record for everything. I'm sure someone else holds the record for most TDs during the 1st quarter of games or most TDs after being down by more than 10 pts after the half. List goes on and on.

I'm with Bill, wins baby, is all that matters, and for that one, no one even comes close to the GOAT. Wilson may catch him if he plays another 12 years or so.

Good for Drew Brees and the Saints' organization and fans. If it isn't Brady in the end then I would much rather see Brees hold the record than the Forehead. Plus, the Saints have become the other team I tend to root for if I it can't be the Patriots.

Honestly the only reason I wanted Brady to break the record first was to see how he would handle it, hoping he’s be mostly nonchalant about it so I could get on my high horse about how little regard he has for personal accomplishments, similar to how Belichick treats the AFC champion trophy.
He would have been stupid to treat it in any way other than nonchalantly since he’d have known that Brees would almost certainly have taken it away the next day.

All I know if the Pats don't win/advance the Superbowl I'll be rooting for the Saints to win the whole thing

Brees on not having a perfect completion%:

"I'll be honest with you," he told ESPN's Lisa Salters after the game, "you always think about the one that you missed. If I just set my darn feet and throw it to the running back, it's 30 for 30, so that one may haunt me for a little while."

I have some empathy and usually pull for the Saints.

As to a blown call turning the tide of a conference championship game, we've been there!

League Admits One Blown Call in AFC Championship

"As first reported on the Jacksonville Jaguars website by senior editor Vic Ketchman, the pass interference call on Ellis Hobbs in the AFC Championship game was completely wrong.
That penalty gave the Indianapolis Colts a 1st-and-goal at the New England Patriots 1-yard line instead of a 3rd-and-long from the 19. It amounted to free points for the Colts who were nearly out of the game and was a major cog in the Indy's comeback."

"There is no such thing as face-guarding," Greg Aiello, the NFL's vice president of communications e-mailed yesterday. "There must be contact to have a foul."

That will haunt him more than the season killing INT last year. Last night is the #1 Brees game of all-time, in all its glory. Top 5 all-time QB? Lol.

he is accurate but its nice to have guys that can catch anything

Congrats to Brees. Great player and seemingly a great guy. He will likely hold the majority of counting stats by the time he retires. QB passing records do not mean a ton to me. Almost all of the career lists consist of players who have played in last 15 years from yards to QB rating and what not. All/most of his records will be surpassed by current crop of QB's as the rule changes in the past 10 years have made 4000 passing yards and 30 TD's ho hum. An average QB like Kirk Cousins has completed over 70% of his passes the past 2 years and he was nearly run out of town 8 weeks ago.

How can people say Brees is top 5 of all time when he’s the 3rd or 4th best of his own era?!
