Yes. Committing 2 delay of game penalties will result in unsportsmanlike conduct. That's why they went with a false start on the 2nd one.

So they can do an unlimited number of false starts without the same consequence?

I think something like this happened against the Giants in SB XLVI, where the Giants went offside at the end of the game, and there was a 10 second run off. I think BB wants the rule changed, but nothing happens unless it is the Patriots doing this.

I am very curious about this, especially since the Patriots technically *didn’t* commit any 5-yard pre-snap penalties.

They didn’t throw a 15 yarder against the Squealers that time they kept going offsides to block that FG, although they were on defense at the time so maybe that’s the key difference.

But yes, this is something which I’ve noticed in the past, especially in the college game, and I’ve always wondered if some coach out there would have the nerve to exploit it by, say, running (for example) 8 minutes off the clock between plays (or forcing the other team to call a time out)

Rule 4, section 7, article 1, note 1 states that two successive delay of game penalties on the same down is met with a 15yd penalty.

Rule 12, section 3, article 3 states that multiple fouls to run time off the game clock is met with a 15yd penalty and the game clock being reset to where it was at the snap.

I actually thought the main reason for the attempted 5 yard penalties was to get a little more room to punt, but I'm not familiar with the intricacies of when the clock starts running after various penalties when declined vs not declined.

Let's talk about the loophole itself. They managed to run 1:22 off the clock between 3rd & 4th downs toward the end of a game. Why haven't we seen anybody do this before? It could be huge if the game were actually close.

Will there be an emergency mid-season rule change? Was that actually BB's plan, to draw the league's attention to the loophole? And if so, why do it at a time when it doesn't actually matter rather than pulling it out of your bag of tricks to ice a tight win? (Could it be--gasp--just plain "good sportsmanship"?)

I think BB hates the loophole and was rubbing it in the NFL's face to force a change, preferably mid-season.

I’m convinced that it was just good situational football and that Bolden made the choice on his own. We don’t see much coming from the mouth of Belichick in between the first and second penalties, so my guess is that it was all Bolden.

I think Belichick sent the plan in when he sent the punt team in and told them to take a delay and then if that was declined to intentionally false start.
