NFL GAME DAY DISCUSSION Chiefs @ Broncos game thread - (Updated) Reaction to Mahomes' Injury

I don't know, for a guy who runs the ball a fair amount, he does a much better job than anyone besides maybe Russell Wilson at getting down before he takes a hit. He certainly doesn't play like Cam Newton does, seeking contact and taking hits like a running back. Last night's injury was a freak thing caused by a rapid twitch movement. Could happen to anyone at any time, including Brady, though you wonder if someone like Mahomes is more susceptible to that sort of thing simply because of how athletic and tuned up he is.

Certainly agree an injury to Mahomes is bad for football. I hope it's only a short-term thing.
I read last night that some people are anatomically more likely to dislocate a knee then others structurally. And that if it happens a first time re-occurrence is common.

Now I have no idea if that is true. Read it on twitter.

Several doctors confirmed this in articles I read about the Mahomes injury.

Pretty well, for a while.

2010 especially, he was excellent.
I think you’re missing the point. If a team has a great quarterback, you don’t take risks for short term goals when he’s in his early 20’s

Vick’s career was a brief explosion and then it was over. It wouldn’t be worth risking Mahomes future for a chance at a super bowl this year.

Well Mahomes didn't get his injury by being a 'running QB' this time. He made a Brady-type sneak and it was a freak injury. I'll wait to see how long he's out before writing off the rest of the AFC.

As Haterproof stated, the Bills are usually good for 1 or 2 losses against inferior teams, but the Pats seem to do the same every year. The Bills schedule is disgustingly easy but their QB doesn't inspire confidence.

Its true with shoulder dislocations.

Treatment the first time it happens can determine whether it occurs again.

No one is to blame for Patrick Mahomes injury

Really? Because I remember saying out loud “what the **** are they doing?” on the QB sneak before I even saw Mahomes writhing in pain.

Andy Reid has no regrets for calling quarterback sneak

Andy Reid so predictable in defending every mistake he’s ever made. Cites low risk of injuries on QB sneaks, except most QB sneaks don’t involve QBs who are hobbling all over the field playing through a bad leg injury. Guy is a clown as usual.

Sure dude. When the other million quarterback sneaks happened this year with no problem, were you sitting there and going "WHAT ARE THEY DOING?!"

I still blame Belichick when Brady tore his ACL because he should have known it was coming and put Cassel in for that play. Bill the coach getting in the way of Bill the GM.

You really don’t think his injury was the result of numerous hits/injuries, including the high ankle sprain he was playing on, and was just s totally random event? I disagree. Maybe that particular play was not high risk without context, but he has injured his leg numerous times this year by not protecting himself and the injury last night appeared to be caused by the cumulative damage he’s been playing through.

Reid is right. QB sneaks are fairly low risk plays and Mahomes (coming into the game) was dealing with an ankle injury which had nothing to do with his knee. If he's healthy enough to play then he should be capable of running a fairly routine QB sneak, a play which has been run countless times prior without incident.

What would Belichick have done? If Brady (or Mahomes, or any hypothetical Patriots' QB) was healthy enough to play and he felt the QB sneak was the best play call in a particular situation, he'd have run the sneak. And if asked post-game about whether he regretted calling that play, he would've stood by his decision as "calling what we felt gave us the best chance to succeed".

Seems pretty absurd and low to attack Reid as a "clown" for running the play in the first place, let alone defending himself for having run it.

Are you a doctor

You didn’t notice Mahomes limping all over the field and clenching his teeth last night before the play? Sure dude, I made it up. Nice terrible straw man argument there. Mahomes was gimpy as fck last night, and purposefully initiating contact was a bad idea. Of course I don’t think all QB sneaks are likely to cause an injury. Do you really not believe Mahomes was way more at risk for an injury there?

Dr. Chao explicitly said the injuries were completely unrelated. Unless you're an orthopaedic surgeon and not telling anyone, you're just inventing connections between the injuries that medical professionals have already explained had nothing at all to do with one another. Brady's also run (and called his own number for them) sneaks while hobbled, but his knee hasn't exploded. A high ankle sprain on one leg simply doesn't make you any more susceptible to a knee dislocation on the other, so shut the **** up.

Matt More and KC offense has put up more points in 2 1/2 quarters at Denver than Tom Brady and the vaunted Pat's offense put up in 4 quarters in Buffalo...hmmmm

Buffalo is 4-1 and Denver is 2-5...hmmmm

I mean, in general, yeah, it's not a great idea to expose QBs (especially those already nicked up) to contact.

But you seem to be assuming that Mahomes' ankle injury put him at significantly greater risk of dislocating his kneecap (which none of us, yourself included, know to be true). And furthermore, the QB sneak is a low risk, relatively benign play. The QB remains low to the ground, there is little momentum going into the play from either the ball carrier or the tackler(s).

I can possibly see critiquing Reid for running a QB draw from shotgun in a longer yardage situation with a gimpy QB. But a QB sneak? Nah.

The injuries weren't even on the same leg. He dislocated his right knee, he had sprained his left ankle.

Where does he say the injuries are totally unrelated? I take it you are not familiar with overcompensation, a very well know cause for injuring one leg and then the other?

Patrick Mahomes will need surgery on knee, sooner or later

Even before Mahomes' injury, I thought Texans are a bigger threat to Pats for #1 seed. Unless Raiders (I know, lol) make a big push in AFC west, Chiefs can still win that division. Mahomes will likely be back for our game in Dec. As it stands now my picks for AFC would be

Pats
Texans
Ravens
Chiefs
Colts
Bills

Edit: I hope Andy Reid doesn't make the dumb mistake of playing Mahomes until he's 100%, even if it is next season. Shanahan forced RGIII to play and we all know what happened.
