Not saying Bill hasn’t made great second round picks, he clearly has, but collectively it’s not a great overall list, especially in recent years and especially in the secondary.

In one of Michael Holley’s books (War Room, I think), he mentioned that the Patriots 2nd round strategy is to take guys with 1st round talent but for various reasons haven’t been able to put it together. That explains most of those guys on the list plus the successes as well (Gronk, Collins, Wilson, Light, Vollmer). It doesn’t explain the safeties and slot corners though.

Not necessarily justifying this strategy by the way. It’s clear they still approach the 2nd round this way though even 2 decades later.

This was gone over on this board just recently and the hit rate is fine.

It would be interesting to compare all of the second rounds in total to the next player picked after them. That would eliminate the preconception of what the expectations of a second rounder (mostly at the end) really are.

Good point. But I think that there was a reaction later as well. At some point (perhaps after experiences with Urban Meyer's Florida crew) I think BB said "to hell with this -- just let's take reasonably athletic guys who have been in a good programme and have a good attitude and I'll coach them up". Hence the all-Rutgers drafting (which, in retrospect, wasn't the world's worst strategy).

I think the safeties and slot corners is explained by basic economics. There are noticeably fewer capable secondary players in the NFL than at other positions. This is why the Gilmore signing was so brilliant, too, because they identified an elite cornerback going’s into his prime and pulled the trigger, and despite paying him a huge amount, are still coming out in the plus column on this; they also paid through the nose for Revis in 2014 and gave McCourty a huge deal, and both were good deals.

Seems that finding a pass catcher or pass rusher mid season, via trade or developmental player, isn’t as tough as you’d think, which is why you see guys like Jones, Flowers, Cooks, etc. often traded away/not re-signed since the Patriots realize they are overpriced.

How many competent cornerbacks and safeties could you pickup without giving up a huge amount of capital? We saw the results in SB52 vs. SB53 when you’re a player short versus well-stocked in the secondary. I think Bill just looks at it like supply and demand.
