Postgame thread: Patriots defeat Panthers 10 - 3

I pointed that out in the game thread about Meyers.. just a wake up wet-slap in the face as to what NFL speed is really like. He now knows he can't just get by on talent and has to put out nothing less than 100%, especially on route running.

The fastest way to Brady's doghouse is to quit on a route which he did last night. He'll be busy digging himself out of a hole right about now.

Yup. And, better now than in the regular season. He'll learn.

People point to the deep ball and say he gave up, but the route that stood out to me was his in cut that drifted upfield, allowing the defender to get a hand in to break up the pass. He's got to play the angle and shield the ball from the defender.

It's also a case of letting your aging, superstar receiver take less of a beating. As a WR, you only get hit when you make a catch. As a PR, you get hit every other punt, and with this D, there will be lots of punts. BB will want to save Jules for key returns. He'll be out there in January, but somebody else will be given a chance during most of the regular season. Hopefully, Gunner has a role as a gunner and is then available to return kicks.

I made the exact point a week ago thinking about the potential of our Defense forcing punts and Edelman as our main punt returner... And got a lot of disagrees and this.

If the defense continues playing like this in the real season. Woo wee

Gunner is a sneaky sleeper to make the roster over Berrios. I don’t think he’s taken any reps at corner this preseason, but perhaps his experience as a corner and his position versatility adds to his value in Belichicks eyes.

Return guy, 5th string WR, emergency Cornerback.

Looking from above at the game my daughter and I agreed he made the wrong decision on the first two punts.

The first he had plenty of space and should never have called for a fair catch and on the second he was lucky it didn't result in a bang bang play where he might have coughed up the ball.

TE Ryan Izzo might be what we all hope Dwayne Allen would be a little more than just a Blocker I like what I see.

So Gunner is not the as our Punt Returner.

Agreed, having Jules on the field as a wr is critical for Brady this year as Gronk is gone. No reason to have him return punts in the reg season if there is someone competent to do so.

OK, why the hell would anyone disagree with the above post?

Someone's brain didn't get permanently damaged? That's terrible news!

The fact that he’s taking first team reps means he’s on the team. The guys fighting for roster spots are the ones who only played only in 2nd half and will play in the 4th game.

Okay, but with Edelman, Gordon, Thomas, Harry, and Harris all sitting out last night, the only WR Meyers "beat out" for "first team" reps was Berrios. We were basically running Meyers, Dorsett, and Olszewski as the 3 WR all game. I wouldn't read into Meyers running with the 1's too much.

In other news, Sony Michel looks great.
Definitely looked faster and shiftier, that 30 yard run with the jump cut that was called back because of a penalty, was vintage Michel at Georgia. He really didn’t have that shiftiness last year.

Do you have any sources or details? All I can find is general mentions like "all-conference special teams" and can't tell if that refers to more than his punt return prowess.
From his college sports web site, he had a career day his sophomore year with 274 yards in punt returns one game versus a DII school ..... and built on that.
>>>Set a career highs in tackles with 17 vs Upper Iowa (Sept. 01), punt returns with 7 vs Minnesota Crookston (Nov. 12), punt return yards (194) vs Minnesota Crookston (Nov. 12) and punt return long (72 yards) vs Minnesota Crookston (Nov. 12)... Totaled 274 all-purpose yards and 277 punt return yards... Broke the Bemidji State University football single-game punt return yardage record by 40 yards and returned one punt for a touchdown vs Minnesota Crookston (Nov. 12)...<<<<

I found watching the game frustrating as they seemingly never show key replays. When there is a big hold I'd like a chance to review it to see if it really happened, how bad was it and did it impact the play. Michel has a 30 yard run called back by a hold yet we never get to see it. Sometimes a penalty means the player was beat or out of position, sometimes it was a ticky tack call. Nice to be able to see it to make your own assessment.

I saw that...Zolak commented on TV that he made a great decision on the second return . I think he decided ahead of time that he was going to run it back the second time around because he screwed up on the first one.

My thoughts (some of them echoes of others):

1) Meyers has potential, but it's all about trust from Brady, and he doesn't have it yet. I still think he makes the team, but I could see him being inactive on game days if everyone else is healthy. Top four right now are Edelman, Gordon, Dorsett, and one of Harry/Thomas.

2) Izzo is making the team, even if it's just as a blocking TE. The fact he seems to have some sync with Brady and can chip in with a catch here and there is a bonus. When Watson comes back, he's the receiving TE.

3) I think Cowart is in as well. Gun to my head right now I think Pennel is out, but only because I just don't remember anything he's done. We'll see.

4) King's injury is too bad, I like him on ST. But this opens up a new slot for someone to take advantage of to sneak on the roster. Guys like Ebner or Crossen seem to be more likely to make it now (if they weren't going to already).

5) Loved seeing Winovich out there early with the 1's. He may not be ready for that in the regular season, but he didn't look out of place. Just keep plugging, crazy dude.

6) The starting defense appears to be (with top rotational players):

Guy-Shelton-Bennett (Wise-Butler)
Hightower-Van Noy-Collins (Bentley)
McCourty-Harmon (until Chung comes back, but both will see snaps)
Gilmore-McCourty-Jones (Jackson)

7) A lot will be made about the struggles of the back o-linemen, but I'm less worried about that. I wonder how any of our starters would look if we suddenly put them out there with 4 backups. I don't think any team's OL is going to look good if they have to replace all of their starters. The hope is that the backups can fill in one or two at a time, so I'll reserve judgment and trust in Scar.

It's called preseason TV. You get to see more Paul "I'm not an expert" Perillo's fat yap motoring on and on, than actual football.

"IMO Bob, some players will make this team, and others will not. It'll be interesting. Back to this play that's already been snapped..."

Did he do anything right from your godly position?
