Patriots 53-man Roster Projection 3.0: Several Vets Face the Axe

Lol. Burhead would easily exceed Bolden’s production had he played his entire career there. He had 8 total TD’s his first year. He’s a better runner and receiver than Bolden.
Burkhead has durability issues, but he is a much more talented offensive player.

“It’s not about collecting players; it’s about building a team”. We understand this, but we all too often ignore it when indulging in this exercise. Roles matter, and you need to build a team to fill them. People decry all the STers kept, but someone has to do those jobs, and games will be lost if they’re not adequately. With that said, this is how I see things as of now:

QB (2) Brady, Stidham - I’ve seen enough to make me believe the Pats have just as good a chance to win a game or 3 with Stidham under center as they do with Brian Hoyer. With that said, I would not be surprised if Hoyer isn’t resigned after Halloween once some other positions are clarified. The $1.5 million of guaranteed money probably comes with offset conditions, so, unless someone comes along and offers him more than $1.5 m, he doesn’t really have any incentive to jump at the first offer he receives.

RB (5) Michel, White, Develin, Harris, Bolden - Burkhead makes the initial 53, but he’s experienced head injuries both of the last 2 seasons, and he’s been dinged already in camp this year. He’s a valuable player with guaranteed money, so he gets IR’d because of the head injuries and is possibly activated after week 8 to make a contribution down the stretch.

WR (7) Edelman, Gordon,Thomas,Harry,Meyers,Dorsett,Slater - There’s considerable talent in this group but also considerable uncertainty. Thomas’ health, Meyers and Harry’s inexperience and Gordon being the walking definition of uncertainty. That’s why I’m keeping Dorsett. Slater is my designated cut for a day to get Burkhead to IR.

TE (2) LaCosse, Izzo - if both of these guys are healthy to start the season, I’d try to ride it out until Watson’s return with just these two.

OL (8) Wynn,Thuney,Andrews,Mason,Cannon,Karras,Froholdt,Skipper - Many bang on Skipper, but he’s not been the problem so far this preseason. The interior line backups have been. This is the position most likely to see a waiver claim or veteran signing to solidify.

STs (3) Gostkowski, Cardona, Bailey

DL (8) Bennett, Guy, Pennel,Butler,Shelton,Simon,Winovich,Cowart - Everyone wants to load up on edge rushers, but you need enough fatties to play goal line and short yardage. I’m not even sure if this enough because I expect them to play 3 290+ pounders a lot along with 4 LBs in their base front. I prefer to believe there is a reasonable explanation to the Mike Pennel mystery and that it ends well. Wise is a tough omit, but his role has been diminished.

LB (6) Hightower,Van Noy,Collins,Bentley,Munson,King- I left Roberts and Calhoun off for Munson as Roberts doesn’t play teams, Munson is more versatile, and Hightower and Bentley can serve as thumpers.

CB (7) Gilmore,J.McCourty,Jones,Jackson,Williams,Dawson,Crossen - You can’t have too many cornerbacks. Besides, this is the deepest and most talented position on the team.

S (5) D.McCourty,Chung,Harmon,Brooks,Ebner - Brooks is a good addition to the group. Obi is a New England kid, but, despite his athleticism, his instincts for the game are nearly as bad as Jordan Richards’. Ebner is my designated cut to open a roster spot to tryout an OLineman or two.

That’s all you got?

The numbers are facts. It's ok if you want to believe in fairy tales of what could have been. I'll stick with the facts.

I have Kendricks over Izzo, but this is a fine roster.
I also have Ebner over Crossen, but can't argue with your choice.

I have the superstitious feeling that posting this will lead to bad things. But knocking on wood and crossing my fingers...

Even though Slater would be a UFA I cant see them doing this. Out of principle.

Curious why you have Kendricks over Izzo

Kendrick's is a vet, who played all of the last game. He has some pass-catching a ability. I just don't the point of have Izzo on the roster instead of the Practice squad. He certainly won't be active without an injury to LeCosse.

Kendricks is the 2nd best TE on the team. If he is healthy then he should be on the 53...he can block, catch and has experience. That's saying more then most of the others. If they are going light at TE this year...I think it's more important to have someone that is a threat to block or catch....instead of going with a player that can only block or catch as others have said.

This means Shelton's a bigger lock than Brady.

Speaking of locks: as in most years, but moreso this year than in others, I wonder how many of the consensus "locks" will not be around come week 2.

Is it time to let Ebner or King go and let some of the younger guys take their spots?

I liked what I saw and heard about Calhoun. I hope he’s okay and is on the 53.

I also like Munson and would like to see him on the PS.

Cowart showed some strength out there and would like to see him on the 53.

Dawson might benefit from a year on the PS if he could clear waivers.

Rivers was starting to improve and a year on IR, if his injury warrants it, would allow us to hold onto him for next season.

I understand Hoyer’s value, but I’d rather see them release him and keep one of the younger players.

What's with the seeming improvement, at least to this point, with Danny Shelton? Well, PFT might just have it for us.

“I think Bill was really surprised when I came in for OTAs and I was about 325, as [compared] to 342 pounds that I was the previous year,” Shelton said, via the Boston Herald. “I felt a lot quicker. I felt like he’s seen my goal this year as far as how much my weight plays a part in my approach to the season. We agreed on 330 as a good goal, and I’ve been maintaining that this whole offseason.”

How did he do it? By replacing some of the high-calorie staples in his diet with vegetables, as well as by getting creative with his workouts with activities including mixed martial arts, jiu-jitsu and chopping logs with an axe.

Danny Shelton impressed Bill Belichick by slimming down to 325

Let’s not forget that bb almost always cuts the roster to 51 or 52 and signs guys from other teams cut downs as auditions for the first few weeks.

Most everyone here is likely keeping 1 to 2 too many of our current guys in their projections

Over the past few week, several, maybe a minority, of board members use the word "lock" to mean "likely to make the team" it seems, instead of "absolutely guaranteed to make the team."
