Edelman & D. Thomas back at practice; Gordon in warmups

It's a one-year deal with just 150K guaranteed; they didn't even guarantee him his base salary/roster bonus of about $3M. If they cut him, they are only out 150K in dead cap. The contract is structured for the team to get out easily and with virtually no loss should they cut him. He has a roster bonus of about $1.5M. It's possible the roster bonus has already kicked in (and not updated on Spoctrac), but it may well be a condition that he is on the roster in September.

Demaryius Thomas

In terms of nothing being reported about him looking bad, I'm not saying that has looked bad. I just see a guy about to turn 32, who was already declining, coming off an achilles injury, and the best deal he could get was a 150K guarantee, or basically nothing. It would not surprise me if just doesn't have it anymore. And the Patriots wide receiver situation seems a heck of a lot rosier than it did when they signed him.

I think the team has already seen him run 60 yards, and the full route tree, and to thier satisfaction or he would have been already cut. Now it is just doing it after a CB puts a fist in his chest. Yeah he is declining but he is declining from being a top 20 WR, I will be pleased as punch to see him be an average #2 skill wise sharing the field with Gordon, Endlemen, Harry and our backfield.

Given the injury and the fact that he’s gotten no time in with Brady, I’d be pleasantly shocked if DT comes off PUP before Week 1. Very good to see Edelman back, though.

I agree. Of course until he comes back, any talk about Harris is really moot. But that being said, I feel bad about Harris' situation here. From what I've seen, he's a legit NFL receiver who seems to be caught by a tidal wave of receivers coming back from injury and suspension on one side, and the surprise competition of a UDFA on the other.

I STILL think Thomas is going to stay on PUP to start the season, though I am a lot less confident than I was yesterday. Edelman, Harry, Gordon and Dorsett are the locks, And given the many other tough roster choices the Pats are going to have to make, as of this minute and of course subject to change at any time of my choosing, ;), I think they are only going with 5 WR's and 2 TE's. That leaves one spot open for Harris and Meyers. While Harris obviously has experience on his side and is certainly as good as Meyers at this point. But to make the team he'd have to show he was materially BETTER than Meyers and he hasn't. Plus there is the upside and cost equation as well As for Berrios, I wish him well in the XFL.

At TE, they'll only keep 2. Ironically Izzo gets the lock nod because he can replace Allen's role with much of a drop off, if any. The other spot is open for grabs between Lacosse, Kendricks, and Shaubert. Unless shaubert WOWs them in the next 2 weeks, he's a PS possibility. So its up to Lacosse and Kendricks to decide who gets the job, which might only last 4 weeks anyways.

One thing that's worry-some about our WR's other than Edelman is their lack of ST's pedigree. So who can play ST's from that bunch?? Seems like we have some good outright WR's but non would win any ST's award. BB like being creative with his game day Roster and this WR group lacks Good ST's players and Braxton Berrios doesn't count. Can't dress em all if they are one dimensional roster types.

With the weak TE position,

Edelman
Gordon
Thomas
Dorsett
Harry
Meyers

is still on track, IMO, though BB will obviously have to decide whether or not to carry that many WRs. Does anyone here (other than Patsfan2, who'd insist to all of us that the 3 month old infant with no limbs was ahead of Dorsett on his depth chart) think Harris or Berrios will beat out anyone on the above list?

Harris may have shot. Berrios to PS or Pats Midwest or Pats South.

If he practiced (I haven’t read yet), he had to have been taken off. If not and they keep up there, he’s stuck there for the first 6 games. It will be interesting to see how close they think he is. For example, can he return in a month? If so, he should be on the active roster.

Is it too early to talk about 19 - 0?

PUP players have participated in warm ups across the summer and then gone to work on conditioning. After the open trading camp cutoff reporters can only view warm ups. So seeing the player doesn’t necessarily mean he is off PUP.

I agree that keeping DT on PUP is better for the Patriots. He is coming off a bad injury in December. They have other receivers available. They could use him in November.
However staying on PUP is not good for Thomas. Presumably the medical staff will clear him when he is ready, not when it’s convenient for the Patriots.

a.) Assuming DT is healthy enough to play week 1, here's my updated WR rankings:

Edelman (Think his thumb is fine by now if he's suiting up)
Meyers (Best WR all camp)
Dorsett (System experence and dependability)
Gordon (On NFI)
Harry (dinged up)
Thomas (has not cut yet)
Slater (Ace gunner)
=============
Berrios (Maybe re-sign to PS)
Harris (I think PUP or injury settlement)
Patteron (Long shot)
Davis (Longer shot)

b.) It is more likely that we keep 7 WR's now...maybe go short at TE with Watson suspended (2 TE's)....and/or possibly let Hoyer walk to save another roster slot....

C'mon man, you're a vet. You should know Harris can't go on PUP after practicing even once.

Aw damn! My bad!

Injury settlement it is, IMO....with instructions to sit by the phone...

I wouldn't mind seeing Harry on both of the coverage teams. That kid is one tough dude.

Also fair--as I said, I can see it going either way. I'm just thrilled that we're talking about cutting actual NFL-caliber receivers at all. The rebuilding of the receiver corps is pointing in a very positive direction.

In related news, does anybody see a KR on this roster?
Damien Harris?

Just saw that he didn’t actually practice. At least it’s a step in the right direction.

There's 0 chance DT stays on PUP to start the season, look at his contract.

So many conflicting reports by "reporters" today...hard to tell who practiced and who was limited.

Average return to play is 9-11 months depending on type of surgery. Seems borderline.
