Pats - Titans postgame thread

Out of state and didn't see the game so I waded thru 55 minutes of Sportscenter for Pats highlights.
What I got was the Titans first TD drive and oh the Pats win. Will surf for more tomorrow.

Take it how you want to take it but Stidham's numbers in the preseason are eerily similar to Jimmy G's first 2 preseason games. Still early but I know the potential is there. He was always going to be a better pro player than college player based on his skillset.

NFL Replay on 588 Fios right now

DVR’d and just finished.

- Jakob Johnson looked very solid as a FB clearing out guys and making holes. Did a nice job staying square on contact when leading the way. Great guy to have as part of the international program. Develin is no spring chicken as a 31-year-old fullback, and the demands of the position obviously don’t lead to very long careers. Given the emphasis on the run game as Brady winds down, the fullback position has high intrigue for me. Maybe Johnson can be the guy a year or two down the road.

- Can’t say much else about Winovich than what’s probably already been mentioned. He looks the part, and should have an immediate role. I will say I was shocked at Ninkovich’s sideline comment when he said Winovich “is not going to play over guys right now” and that he needs to pay dues on special teams. Strongly disagree. Edge/DE is not QB where one guy is out there. Even if Bennett and Simon are “starters”, guys will be rotated and Winovich will get his share of snaps. It felt like an odd assessment on Ninkovich’s part, and it continued to become more and more foolish as Winovich continued to dominate. He’s not Geneo Grissom playing special teams and garbage time. He looks very much like a contributor in year 1.

- The segment with Logan Ryan and Harmon really made me miss him. If only today’s game was like past eras where you could more easily retain talent and weren’t battling with the salary cap which guys like Lombardi, Schula, Walsh etc didn’t deal with. Just another small reminder that Belichick is the greatest coach, as well as GM, of all time.

Your best bet is the official NYJFL* youtube channel. They usually post 5-10 minute highlights.

Reviewing the first preseason game I remember thinking to myself, Ghost missed the kick but he was kicking from the right hash and just barely missed. If he tried to push the kick more to the left he might just push it too far.

Sure enough this is what happens in this game. But I think wind may have been a factor? Kicking from the hashmarks seems far more difficult than kicking from the middle.

Just a couple of quick notes, based solely upon what I saw tonight (ok, almost solely upon what I saw tonight):

  • I'm looking forward to watching Meyers against the Panthers' starters.
  • This team needs to find a swing tackle.
  • Stidham isn't ready to be the QB2.
  • Berrios won't be making the 53.
  • Speaking of Berrios, I'd love to get BB/McDaniels to tell us their blame pie percentages on the Hoyer INT.
  • Winovich doesn't appear to have an 'off' switch.
  • Hell of a free kick by the rookie.

I'm interested to see what we do at TE. I wonder if we keep Izzo, he is a solid blocker. Not to mention, isn't LaCosse injured? Does Izzo have practice squad eligibility? Kendricks is so injury prone and Saubert is unproven, but you never know

Where do you get that Kendricks is injury prone?

Who is Jakob Johnson? And who this linebacker Munson??

Munson is a LB who spent time with the Giants before being cut at the end of TC last year. The Pats signed him to the PS mid-season.

Jakob Johnson is a developmental player out of Europe. The Patriots were awarded him and a special PS spot that he'll have all year.

I’d love to hear their analysis too. Mine put the majority of the blame on Hoyer for not leading Berrios enough. Berrios didn’t get separation but the ball was still thrown to where he was not where he was going. Made it easy for Ryan.

Two last notes:

The TE position sucks ass through a straw.
Shelton is looking as if it's just possible that he won't suck this year.

A Georgia and ‘Bama backfield is something to get excited about. Pound, pound pound with Sony and Damien. Throw in Burkhead and Bolden and it never stops. That will open the passing game something ridiculous. Plus it is nice injury insurance.

Winno is filthy. Dude is an absolute animal out there. Never stops, and can’t stop. I don’t remember ever seeing a rookie end up where the ball is regardless if it is run away from him or not. People, I hope, are understanding just what this dude will be bringing to this D. Him, Hightower, Bennett and Collins/Van Noy et al? Good lord. Feasting time.

A casual observation from Draft Weekend when the naysayers critiqued BB's draft, at this stage the Pats appear to have done well.. Harry, Williams, Winovich, Stidham, Harris, Stidham, Bailey and UDFA Meyers.. looks like a very good draft, but time will tell as the season progresses.

The play of Williams, Winovich, Stidham, Harris, Bailey and Meyers looked impressive last night..

The jury is out on Cajuste and Froholt... but they may stick also..

I would guess BB has simply moved on from TE. He popularized the two TE set a decade ago and now he sees that many quality TEs are grabbed and paid by other teams. Even last year, NE started putting more importance on an extra RB. Instead of worrying about TE, looks like big, tall WRs & lotsa RBs will be what 2019 is all about on O.

funny how 1 or 2 weeks ago people called for Skipper to be the starting LT and now he isn't good enough to be the swing tackle.

Wynn looked terrific though. He has serious potential.

Cowart has been a pretty big surprise to me. He looked good in training camp and in both preseason games. I think he might be ahead of Pennel and Butler and DT #3 while also be able to play in the 3 man front

So, based on the 2 pre season games are we now only looking at 2 positions still to be set , swing tackle and possibly tight end ?......

Skipper/Croston but I would not be shocked if both are on the 53 due to some uncertainty.
