Sam Darnold Strong In Preseason Opener
Sam Darnold completed 4-of-5 pass attempts for 68 yards and a touchdown in the Jets' preseason loss to the Giants.
Fantasy Impact:
Darnold is picking up right where he left off.
He had the highest QBR in the NFL in the month of December last year, and is a prime breakout candidate. As the youngest QB to start in NFL history, he can be forgiven for not lighting it up right away. Darnold's biggest concern for fantasy purposes is a weak supporting cast, so he cannot be considered in the range with the QB1 candidates. However, in Superflex/2QB leagues, he's a great second option late in drafts.

The Jets offense is going to surprise people this season, and it's not going to be because of their ground game (28th rated o-line [prior to the new LG and Center]). Sam Darnold is a good NFL QB, and I expect him to take a step forward this season.
He was PFF's 2nd rated QB from week 11 on last season, as he was able to increase his completion percentage, and throw just one interception after returning from his ankle injury. Sam now has Anderson/Enunwa/Crowder as his receivers, with Bell in the backfield and sophomore breakout candidate Chris Herndon at TE (once he returns from suspension). That's a dangerous group, and makes Darnold a realistic option in superflex leagues. I probably wouldn't want him to be my only QB in a 12 team single QB league...but he doesn't have to be with how late he's going. Watch him over the first few weeks, and keep his name in mind as a streaming option at points this season.
