I know Wynn is young and doesn’t have an extensive injury history (which is good), but I thought his type of Achilles injury usually took more than a year to completely come back from, in contrast to something like an ACL tear where recovery times are going down. Any info from the board on that? Do we expect Wynn back fit as a fiddle at the beginning of the year?

If you go back and look at wynn’s Tape from college you will see a guy that played the year with a torn labrum and he dominated in the sec.

I see no reason why he should not be 100 percent by September and after an offseason in the strength and conditiining program, he should be able to step right in and start from day 1.

Looking at the roster we likely have about 13 open roster spots right now. We'll probably see 7-8 rookies on the team, so 5-6 spots for vets per trade/FA
The Patriots still have 7 of their own guys out there unsigned. One or more
of them might deserve another shot.

Gostkowski and McClellan would be my two

Hogan and Shelton might also be better than the remaining mediocre free agents.

I have to disagree.

In general I think people see injuries as all of nothing. Either a player is injured and ineffective or healthy and 100%. This is erroneous.

An achilles injury is a big deal. That ankle will NEVER be 100%. Over time, he will (should) adapt and develop compensatory mechanisms.

Now this is not to say that I think he is going to suck or that he will not be starting or that the sky is falling. I am not saying any of that. I am saying he will NOT be 100%. He will probably be the starting LT week 1. However, he may (probably will) struggle initially.

-PS: I am not addressing mentally overcoming the injury simply because that is a lot more nebulous to me and differs person to person.

-Also, ACL injuries, people are back on the field in 9 months on average. However, it usually takes a bit longer (Adrian Peterson is an exception) to get back to their normal level of play. For example, look at Julian Edelman in the last preseason and then coming back from the suspension Week 5 (I acknowledge the confounding factor of 4 weeks off football also played a role). Look at Gronkowski when he came back from the TJ Ward knee shot.

Perhaps. At DT, we need a contributor, an equivalent and upgrade from Shelton. This shouldn't be all that difficult. I expect us to sign a free agent or take for a DT, as we have before. At De, we need an upgrade of Clayborn. Again, we need one player.
I don’t think finding a good run stuffing DT is quite as easy as you seem to suggest in your comment, or they’d simply do it at will. Aside from Wilfork, we’ve had one good year of Branch and a bunch of JAGs.

I think that Bennett’s ceiling is about 75% of what Flowers is, so we probably need two DEs in my opinion. The DL should be a highly targeted area in the draft for both a big bodied run stuffer AND a quick and versatile edge player.

You are right.

If only he wasn't the first NFL athlete ever to tear his Achilles. Then we would know to project if you could return to the world of professional sports at an elite level. Too bad that the team and his doctors have no internal experience with this kind of injury or outside history to guide his recovery process.

On a serious note, nobody is downplaying his injury. But we are at a point with medical science where him not coming back at close to 100% with over 12 months of recovery time would be an upset. Not the other way around.

Gostkowski, Hill, Hogan, Humber, John, McClellan, and Shelton. Croston was
on the practice squad and re-signed.
