TE Dwayne Allen released

Ryan Izzo.

From what I saw from camp, they were impressed enough to move Izzo into the blocking TE spot, until he got hurt. This prevented them from driving Allen's restructure down more, or even releasing him.

That is not what happened. Izzo was never in play in for 2018. He was as close to the 53 as Barrios was to make the team as WR.

Hopefully Izzo can grasp all the protections and get to NFL level blocking this offseason otherwise he will not make it until September.

You could see this coming from a LONG way off. We all knew it.

Yep. Allen would have never played next season on this contract.

What came a bit surprising to me is how early the team already approached him about the paycut. This indicates to me that they are working on some moves before FA otherwise there really was not much of a reason to rush any decision about Allen for another 1.5 weeks. But then on the other hand they did right by the player letting him hit FA properly.

He’s gotten far too much grief, imo. Yes, he was paid handsomely and people wanted catches. But he filled an important role and I’m glad they had him.

If he gets a better offer, so be it. I understand NE’s reluctance to fork out big bucks. But I’d love to see Allen back in the Fall.

I've seen a lot of comments from fans to fans. Is there evidence of him actually getting grief from someone?

I know you disagree. But you act like your opinion is fact, when there is some evidence you may be wrong.

Here it says Izzo was competing for a roster spot against Allen last year.
Report: Patriots place rookie TE Ryan Izzo on IR

Here it is saying Izzo is an upgrade over Allen.
Sunday 7: Patriots have potential hidden gem at tight end, who could play role in 2019

Why wouldn't the Pats wanted to have saved 4 million in cap if Izzo can block? It's not like late round rookies can't come into the league and fill that role. And Izzo certainly couldn't have been a worse receiver than Allen.

Let's see how Izzo fits their plans early. I know. That won't matter either.

All evidence and history shows that you are wrong. Izzo would have never been ready to block at the same level as Allen. Not physically and certainly not mentally. And all of this was apparent during the preseason even though some media members wanted to find some controversy but as often failed to do so. Allen's space was never in danger unless he refused to take the paycut or got injured.

But people love to get attached to camp binkies. At this point it is more likely that Izzo will be cut and forgotten by September than him making the 53. It is that kind of uphill battle for him.

Izzo was no binky. I don't even remember him before camp.

It was obvious the team was strongly thinking of keeping Jackson and Crossen from the first preseason game as well as Malcom Butler his rookie year and David Andrews and on and on.

It was early, but I saw the same with Izzo. You didn't.

What if Izzo is easily on the 53 this year? Will nothing make you wrong?

I will list all the late round draft choices who spent their rookie years on the IR and made the team the next year.

Izzo is a longshot to beat out Hollister for the #3 TE spot.

I agree. However, sometimes do cut veterans early, especially if the team and the player are far apart on numbers. Allen might be back, but that was never going to happen without his agent being free to work the free agent market for at least a couple of months (past the draft.

In the meantime, the team has more flexibility with cap money.

Overpaid and unsung?........... wait what? Isn't getting overpaid in effect means you are being recognised for your skills with cold hard cash?
You may want to re-check the definition of unsung. Kinda defines a guy like Allen

un·sung
Dictionary result for unsung

  1. not celebrated or praised.

synonyms: unacknowledged, uncelebrated, unacclaimed, unapplauded, unpraised, unhailed, unlauded, unhonored, unrenowned, untrumpete

Didn't Derek Rivers do it? Admittedly, my memory could be off.

Assuming Fant and hockenson are off the board by 64, all I have to say is Hello Sternburger, master of the deep seam routes and a perfect option route runner!

Completely useless player. I contributed as much to their championship as he did.

Ryan Izzo by no means received the Malcolm Butler 2014 preseason treatment. That dude was playing every snap of every preseason game.
