Comparing last years defensive performance vs this year

Last year’s SB was an offensive explosion and this year we get one of the greatest defensive performances in SB history.

I think the Rams offense was better than the Eagles and a lot of the players on defense were the same. So what do think made the difference? Just the scheme? A few key guys?

From the blur that was the Super Bowl it seemed like we blitzed more and got a lot more pressure. Whatever it was, the contrast is striking.

Foles is a tougher QB to face than Goff. McVay is a nice young coach but Pederson was more experienced and had a better scheme. Pederson/Foles were more “ready for the moment”

And Belichick had a good plan that was well executed. McCourty (30)? and Gilmore are excellent players, smart and clutch. Those guys single handledly kept the Rams out of the endzone

Sure we had some ups and downs, but if he stays boy this defense is gonna raise havoc!

The sad thing is that this year's game will probably be labelled a "snore" versus last year's game continuing to be heralded as a classic. Both games were corkers if you love football.

Honestly, as trash as Philly fans can be, I would rather have them be our one loss these past three games since that city needs a win worse than anyone. Los Angeles citizens tomorrow, on the other hand, will probably be sipping their deluxe coffees while reading Variety on their phones as the Super Bowl highlights pop on. One picks his head up, and asks a dude sitting at the adjacent table (in a rare moment of human contact), "Hey bro, where do the Rams play again?"

1. Rams didnt have a single snap in red zone which hasn't happened in a Superbowl in 60 years
2. Flores normally loves man to man but flummoxed Goff playing 6 men on the line, blitzing a LOT, but playing more zone quarters than expected.

The biggest difference is that we didn’t have a weak link in the secondary this year, Gilmore was playing like the best corner in the league but the McCourty brothers, Jon Jones (injured last year), JC Jackson, Chung, and Harmon at the end, all played unbelievable. Last year’s secondary had Eric Rowe, Bademosi and Jordan Richards playing at a terrible level. No one except Gilmore played well.

Add an amazing leader and a big game player in Hightower, who was also missing last year instead of M. Flowers and a D line with the likes of 50-year old J. Harrison and Eric Lee, a far more agressive approach by Flores and you get a difference between one of the best and one of worst defensive performances in the Super Bowl history.

They weren't afraid to be aggressive this game. From what I remember they played a lot of high low concept in last year's Superbowl with two safeties. This year I saw a lot of cover zero and disguise in the defense. I also saw a lot of the defense shifting from one look presnap to another looked post snap. They didn't do that nearly as much under Patricia. I really like Flores.

Not to take anything away from the Patriots defensive play, but just to note some things that impacted the overall outcome:

• Goff ****ting himself for pretty much the entire game helped a lot.
  
• The absence of Kupp made defending that offense a lot easier.
  
• The Rams OL had a down game.
• McVay was outcoached to a level we rarely see at the professional level.
• Gurley being injured hurt the Rams running game, and killed their RB passing game.

I think this is the difference, Flo simplified the defense for them, let them play loose and fast, this is what Tower has been unhappy about for quite a while even when we were winning super bowls. They have all wanted the chance to pressure the QBs but Matt P was so scared of consistently sending the guys after the QB.

Goff looked like a deer in the headlights for most of the game due to the defensive pressure of the NEP...

Flores did an excellent job, but gotta remember that BB is not listening to Bon Jovi with his headphones..

After watching his skills in the "playoffs" Flores is better than I knew, but he is as good as gone.. Mr. Kraft cannot offer him HC money to stay here. Imagine coming home to your wife after turning down life changing money and trying to tell your wife about loyalty to the New England Patriots??..

Losing Flores is going to suck. If we go back to a Patricia style bend but don't break Defense next year I'm gonna be pissed.

One thing that stuck out to me was that it seemed that almost every player on the Pats D and special teams made a great play at one time or another. Chung broke up a pass, Gilmore punched the ball loose, Shelton's sack, Van Noy's tackle for a loss on the roll-out, Hightower sack, McCourty pass breakup in endzone, Punt and coverage - Allen and Slater

Goff can't make reads or audible, McVay radios everything to him before the 00:15 game clock cut off. The Pats heavily exploited this and the Rams had no response but long huddles when down 7-10 in the 4th so the Pats D had less time to react to the offensive formation.
