Thoughts on QB prospect sitting out college bowl game?

It sucks that players are skipping games. It impacts the team and the game. But, in the absence of a better system, it's what a draftable player needs to seriously consider, because it's a situation where injury in one relatively meaningless game can cost someone hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of dollars.

Let the Bowl game people pay for injury insurance, and then I can better see the idea of getting pissed at the players.

Millions of dollars are at stake but he might be letting down some guys from school he'll gradually drift away from over the next 3 years so yeah, this kid is america's greatest villain imo.

How on Earth can some 2nd-3rd round QB prospect supplant The Hoodie & Big Bad Patriots as America's greatest villain just by skipping the Camping World Bowl? Shouldn't he at least have to run over some kid's puppy on his way to the press conference to get into the conversation? I've told you a million times to stop exaggerating!

The Camping World Bowl used to be the Blockbuster Bowl, then it was the Tangerine Bowl, then the Champs Sports Bowl, then Camping World starting last year

So, yeah, it's one of those next-to-nothing bowls

I think college football is inherently exploitative and that any player who has real pro prospects is getting screwed over every time he takes the field, so I have no problem at all with this. You can either refuse to pay players or you can get angry when they place their own interests over the team's, but you can't reasonably do both.

He is now above the unwashed mobs of grimy hoodlums who play there

I suppose I could see how that's letting down your teammates. On the other hand it would be hard to care about winning for an institution that makes hundreds of millions off your unpaid labor.
A Scholarship is not the same as a salary but it should be recognized as compensation. No?

People that agree are the same who wanted jimmyG to sit on bench last year at SF.. instead I said play him, he played great and got paid more than he would have otherwise..

Ironically the other reason to sit showed up after getting paid. He kinda sucked and got injured.

For this guy, sitting shows no confidence and his stock should go down.

As a matter of character, I wouldn't draft a player who deserts his teammates and fans.

Not the Camping World Bowl...!

Wait, what is that?

Until I read your reply and googled Camping World Bowl. I thought the "Camping World Bowl" was a made up bowl name designed to mock the low level bowls... apparently though there actually is a "Camping World Bowl".

Would you have the same reaction if it was called the Tangerine Bowl (its former name) or the Orange Bowl? or was it such a bid deal that Camping World is the sponsor?

What you seem to be saying is that players owe nothing to their team or their fans.

Why not quit with 2 games left in the season if their rep has been established?

It would be nuts if we drafted him as Brady’s successor, and then be able to go back and view this thread with that perspective.

IMHO, he will not be on the patriot board because of character issues.

I think the issue is I was not familiar with the Camping World store, and Camping World sounds like a good generic made up store name.

I said nothing remotely like that. Are you trolling tonight?

This could go either way. Belichick is real time football decisions 24-7. The prospect has certain production in his regular season. The sitting kicks it down a bit. But don't think it's deal breaker. It's just less film. And less film in big games. Is it enough..?

It's a knock on the guy for sure. Belichick wants players that play , and love playing. Hmmm . This could knock him off the board after all... lol.

If the players weren't expected to spend 40 plus hours per week in game preparation, travel, and actual game time, the scholarship part might make some sense. In reality, academics are treated as secondary to sport.

The post-season experience might be good "practice" for the NFL. And it would be much more fun than doing all the grueling routines that increase your combine scores. But then again, he's been playing for nothing, so why sacrifice himself further. Either decision on his part wouldn't change my opinion of his character one way or the other. (btw, we may draft him in the 2nd round)

Practice for what? Week 1 of the preseason?

I just don’t think Grier is the guy to sit out a bowl game. He’s their QB, and his draft stock is no safe bet as it is. I’d say otherwise if he was Andrew Luck coming out, but he isn’t Luck. He has a lot to prove to scouts.

Really the bowl game in specific isn’t the point here. I’m someone who wishes they’d go back to having fewer bowl games. A lot of these games ARE money grabs.

No no, the bowl game IS the point here. If WV were in the Playoffs, or even a prestigious bowl, then there's a leg to stand on.

This is a Dec. 28th game against Syracuse, who lost to everyone half-decent they played against this year. This is the Citrus Bowl's little brother.

This kid's going to be a day 1 or day 2 pick, likely day 1, since QBs are always a premium and drafted higher than expected. Even if he's not drafted until the 3rd round, he's still looking at half-decent money for 4 years, rather than being a UDFA is he has a horrific knee injury.

This bowl, and bowls like it, benefit only the schools and the conferences - not a single recruit will come to West Virginia because they won the Camping World bowl, not one. Grier's got a future to think about, and I can't imagine a single one of his teammates blame him for sitting out.

They don't, they've paid back anything they 'owe' and then some.

Because those games actually mean something, where a meaningless exhibition game with a sponsor to line the school's pockets does not.
