2. Can still make plays
3. Can fit here financially (not at $4m but something more reasonable)

Rivers, Davis, and Grissom are the 5th, 6th, and 7th DEs on the Team. Flower, Claiborn, Wise, Simon are ahead of them.

Rivers and Davis are essentially rookies who are both coming back from injury last year.

Grissom is providing the Pats with Special Teams snaps when he's active as he was tonight.

I'm not sure what you think the Pats should expect out of their 5th, 6th, and 7th DEs other than ST snaps and the occasional snap to relieve the top 4 guys. I saw Davis out there a couple of times. Not sure what Rivers snap count was..

I’d be shocked if Flowers were able to get a ton of money on the open market. What I mean by that is anything over $10M per year. His calling card is being an edge defender but doesn’t exactly scare anyone rushing the passer. In addition, he gets banged up a lot. He’s a great complementary guy on the line but I find it hard to believe he gets top dollar to be the guy at DE. Funny how coaches will defend players to the media and justify their low sack totals until it’s time for an extension.

I had a similar feeling that Flowers wouldn't command big numbers prior to the start of the season. That being said, the part in BOLD is not substantiated by anything. Flowers is a helluva pass rusher. If you think offenses aren't keying on him making sure to know where he's at, you aren't paying attention..

This "he's banged up a lot" thing has ZERO foundation. He missed 2 games last year to minor dings. But other than that, he's shown up when needed. Like the SB against Atlanta.

It's not a matter of wanting to play for a winner. It's a matter of whether or not he actually has the ability to play within the system. That means being willing to set the edge if he's playing DE+. Meaning that when the coaches tell you to only take 2 steps upfield before trying to duck under, you only take 2 and not 4-5, leaving you out of position the way Marsh did.

You mention playing for a winner. If he goes back to Seattle, it's a system he knows he can play in and win in. Coming to NE would be a leap of faith that he could do it..

Clayborn has been missing blitzes in earlier games because of technique issues, for example.Tonight he sprung a perfectly timed delayed blitz, just as he had tried numerous times this season, but he took the correct gap. Wise played 32 D-snaps (43%) last night. Got 4 tackles and 2 QBH, and showed good awareness in contain on the right side when he was in there.

Davis was also on for 32 snaps and got a QBH.

Roberts was in for 19 snaps (26%), and didn't register on the stat sheet, but I think he brought a pressure.

Clayborn was on for 17 snaps (23%) - had 3 tackles, 2 QBH and a shared sack (Flowers).

Simon was in for 15 snaps (20%) and got two tackles (and a pressure or two, I'm sure).

Rivers was on for 4 snaps.

I understand that Irvin has that coveted, ultimate quality of not making a single bad play for Pats . but these infatuations with every available “pass rusher“ not on Pats team while ignoring the tape and the stats (not to mention the assigned jobs etc etc) . and blindly dismissing young homegrown players (coming back from significant injuries at that and improving) are taking the grass is greener to another level..

Davis was a starter again last night despite all edge players being healthy . knows his job, plays what he is asked for every play, does a nice job pushing the pocket, setting the edge, minding the gaps. He is coming back from significant injury to his first NFL season..

Wise had a very good rookie year when team needed him to step up in much bigger capacity than expected . he is playing through injuries all season and still has been solid #2 DE (while Clayborn was adapting) who can play anywhere on the line . leads the team in sacks (fwiw) ..

Rivers is coming back from devastating rookie TC ACL injury . usually takes a full playing season for players to come to their previous form . with Simon out he entered DE rotation and showed glimpses of why draft board was excited to have him drafted..

All these players are in their 1-2 seasons, improving and are under min contract control through at least 2020.

On the other side there is the coveted Irvin who has 6 tackles, 4 QB hits and a lazy FF on the season as supposed #1 D star player, freelancing all the time as supposed leader, mainly concerned with chasing sacks (and not getting a single one), giving up on his team and teammates . benched already in second half of week 1 and looked like crap, played like crap ever since..

I think Irvin could help. He had 8 sacks last year and I doubt his talent level has dropped off that much. He could be the missing piece this team needs. He could play outside LB or DE and Bill loved that kind of versatility.

The Pats front-6 is getting better each week with cooperatively getting QB pressure while maintaining the edge. I don't think that introducing a new guy for the next seven games is really necessary, and I doubt that Irvin would make a sufficiently significant difference. He might even disrupt the (now, finally) established communication, coordination and flow.
