Also, what is with these football writers all writing that the NFL is at the "Quarter Pole?"

The Browns Quarter Pole Report — The A to Z Podcast With Andre Knott and Zac Jackson

The Quarter Pole is the pole signifying the last 1/4 mile of the race, not the first 1/4. ITs one of the last poles on the track. The 12th week of the NFL is the Quarter pole.
Aren't these professional sports journalists supposed to know this?

In the Patriots' case, n usually includes 6 games against the Dolphins, Jets, and Bills who are traditionally anywhere from terrible to mediocre... especially on offense.

Please tell me you are not repeating this stupidity about the AFC East being so weak when their records inside and outside the division are essentially identical.

They looked like it in the biggest game of the year, did they not?
So did the team they played that won the Super Bowl. And honestly when you take out the 2nd best player in the secondary who played the most defensive snaps all year it’s going to have a negative impact.

You don't need to do it for everyone else, because you're noting the outlier for context, not to go back and redo the numbers. Saying you have to go back for every other team isn't even remotely accurate.

Context. It's all about context. It's not about trying to re-slot. Other teams are irrelevant.

It matters when you're trying to determine how good a team's defense is. The thread title is "Patriots have the 12 ranked D 1/4 into the season - Discuss".

When you are talking about a ranking, of COURSE it's about where this team stands *compared to other teams*. So not only are other teams not irrelevant, they're essential to the very topic being discussed in this thread.

Feel free to go research their average offensive ranks from any statistical measurement you wish to use for those teams during the Brady and Belichick era and get back to me. Their records outside of the division are irrelevant to their offensive rankings in those years. Please tell me which years any of those three teams were considered among the best in the NFL on offense.

(It’s PFF so cue someone completely dismissing this)

Nice play by J-Mac so far. Maybe we should start him over Rowe?

Rowe might be going to IR so you may not have to worry about that.

No, it doesn't. It's completely irrelevant.

You seem to have no idea what you're talking about here, so I'll just move on.

Always funny when someone wants to skew results they skew the results.

There is a scoring system which omits the highest and the lowest score and does a average on the rest. It puts less weight on the extreme result. People somehow cannot comprehend it.

Hahaha! I'm already getting dragged into arguments about last season, so I am not going here. However, on the miss Allen had on Sunday, I admit that Brady overthrew him (but he still has hands of stone and is slow as molasses [whoops, did I say that out loud?])

Actually, Allen would've gotten there, but he had to stop and ask for directions from the defensive tackle who was covering him.

Yeah, I've never seen pudding at a Thanksgiving meal.
I was just trying to stay on topic.

I guess pumpkin pie could be considered a pudding. More of a custard really, but functionally the same as a smooth dessert in my mind.

Also, on record, defensive rankings aren't even 100% relevant at season's END, never mind 4 weeks in.

You can't really note an "outlier" in a 4 sample statistic.

I am traditional - the best is fresh picked apples in a homemade apple pie with vanilla bean ice cream.

Agree about the outlier part.

I prefer the old skool, "bitterly disappointed NYC cynic" tradition - 3 cups of strong, black coffee and a half a pack of cigarettes. Coincidentally, that also the old skool NYC, "too much in a rush for anything else" breakfast.

Same with using median instead of mean.

Your BMs in the mornings must be horrific.

Sure you can, particularly when it's as obvious as this set of 4. But, as I noted, the problem is the small sample size, regardless of the existence of any potential outliers.

If you remove an outlier, you have to remove the outlier from both sides of the sample - the game where the most points or yards are allowed, and the game where the least points or yards are allowed. Anything else is arbitrary.

So yes you can remove an outlier, but you can also add an imaginary game if you want to. Or eliminate the game played on Week 2. Or eliminate games at night, or eliminate home games. But you really can't eliminate (or add) a game you deem to be an outlier, that is arbitrary and subjective. But on Patsfans I guess you can do whatever you want without regard for objective stats.

It still pretty much matches Rowe v. everyone else from last season.
Bill should sign CB Trevin Wade. Right now hes a FA.

We can then have a serious Rowe (yes, I know its Roe) v Wade debate.
