Malcolm Butler Mega Thread

I love how other fans refuse to see that the starting corner for the entire season could have been put in for the 2nd half (or even the 4th quarter) to change things up (or more accurately, revert to the defense that got them to the Super Bowl) and (possibly) win the game, whether he was "ready to play the game," whatever that means, on opening kickoff or not. Your blind allegiance to BB, no matter what was happening on the field (can we agree that it was a disaster?), makes this argument so weak and nonsensical that it makes my blood boil every time I read it.
Direct your boiling and anger where it belongs..

BB knew he was in la-la land and Malcolm confirmed it.

Butler went on to take the blame, saying he probably was not "locked in and focused 100 percent".

“I wasn’t feeling too well," he said. "I felt like that was kind of part of it. Not to blame anybody. I accept full responsibly for myself. I am not blaming the New England Patriots or no one. It could have been just me, you know. It could have been anything, but I was not feeling too well and the New England Patriots are all about doing their job and they want everybody locked in and focused 100 percent and that probably was not the case. I am glad to be a Tennessee Titan.”

Butler: Wasn't 'locked in and focused' for Super Bowl

So you are saying that a coach should put in players who are unprepared to play?
He was trying to win the game. The d was struggling. Who says let’s throw that guy in there who didn’t take preparation seriously all week and see what he can do?

YES!! Because the players he had in there were unprepared to play the game!! The one who had played for him the entire year, no matter what happened in the days leading up to the Super Bowl, had the best odds of being the most prepared to play, or even TO MAKE ONE PLAY. When BB saw that the plan he came up with to exclude Malcolm wasn't working and was costing his awesome offense the game, he should have changed it up. And how do you know that Malcolm didn't take preparation seriously all week? Now who's reading into things? I know there are certain people who will never accept my opinion (and the opinion of many others) that BB's Super Bowl plan, and the failure to make adjustments to the D at halftime, or at any other time during the game, leaving his starting corner on the bench, were a major coaching FAIL in an otherwise stellar coaching career. I have my opinion and you have yours. Let's just leave it at that.

You can’t judge a decision without facts.

But I will put it this way. If Belichick were a guy who would abandon his instincts and beliefs to “try something” and hope to get one play, we wouldn’t have 5 rings, we wouldn’t have been in that game and Butler probably never would have been a patriot.

It makes my blood boil as well. It’s hopeless. Let them cling to their nonsense. I take solace in knowing the vast majority of Patriot fans I’ve spoken with in my every day travels know the truth.

Have you ever noticed that the more insecure people are in their beliefs the more adamant they are in their arguments? They are actually trying to convince themselves as well. That’s why this thread was created so they can point out every mistake Butler makes with the Titans in hopes they can convince themselves of their own nonsense.

In the meantime, Malcolm Butler is being paid $12.25 million a year (not bad for a malingerer, pot smoker, and coach puncher) to play CB for a Titans team that has overcome an injury to their QB to gain wins already this young season over the Jacksonville Jaguars and SB champion Philadelphia Eagles.

You're a pretty good example of your own argument. Especially the part in bold.

Malcolm Butler did not play. The Pats lost the Superbowl. These are the only facts.

You guys seem to be assuming that there's a causative link between these facts.

This is your false premise. This is your mistake. You can not prove that there is any causative link that Butler not playing led to the Superbowl loss. Every argument you attempt to make on this key area of your argument is entirely based on pure speculation.

Once you acknowledge this, and you never will, you might begin to understand why people with minds tend to differ with your opinions.

Could he have made one big play that turned the game around? Yes, this is possible, but it's also possible that he doesn't. It's also possible that another player steps up and makes a big play to turn the game around. It's also possible that he makes a big play and doesn't turn the game around. The Eagles had our number in that game.

This besides the fact that our biggest defensive problem really wasn't at cornerback. We had some holes there yes, but the big problem was in the linebacker corps. When you give Nick Foles, or any other NFL quarterback, all day to throw, it almost doesn't matter how good your defensive backfield is. And Butler would have been exactly zero help with that problem.

Ultimately this all boils down to woulda-coulda-shoulda thinking, the most unproductive form of human thought that (barely) counts as thought at all.

Actually the thread was created back in 2017 when Malcolm was playing poorly with NE .

The arguement was Bill should have tried something.

Oh bull. Part of BB’s greatness is trying something else when what he started out with isn’t working. He refused to go there in the biggest game of the year. Fail. And you have as many facts as I do.

If Belichick thought the other guys were prepared to play and that defense was going to work .... he was horribly mistaken. Butler was not the only one not ready to play. And that defense was coaching malpractice.

His greatness is that he has high expectations of his players. Butler chose to not be prepared to play.
If playing Butler would have been better why would Belichick not do it? You act as if he didn’t care to win.

Of course he cared to win... But he forced it into winning through his tunnel vision coaching decision he boxed himself into. Did you read my post.? Noticed you didn't choose to argue it. Smart move..:D

Malcolm did that for him

He put him in to play special teams. He was dressed for the game. From your take he should have not put the uniform on. o_O

Bill and Matty P tried many things during the course of that game.
And they failed massively. What they didn't try was giving Butler a shot when the other players couldn't execute...at all.

Could he have made a few plays or even a play that might have made the difference? I think so and that's why I believe they erred in not trying to change personell. They should have done what they did in the Seattle Super Bowl. Take out one of the players who is struggling, try someone who is fresh (ya know your season long starter).

What's done is done. While I think not putting Butler in was a big mistake some may not. What we do know is that mediocre personell decisions on defense and bad coaching lost us the Super Bowl. No defense comes out that horrifically without some major coaching failures.

Ultimately it falls on Belichick for not having the talent capable to match the Eagles and/or having a bad game plan.

He didn’t box himself into anything. He made a personell decision. If he doubted it he could have put butler in at any time.

He was flown first class to revis island
