What Do You Expect From Defensive Scheme?

Because they were not having much success running the ball and moderate success passing the ball, even though Bortles is terrible.

Jags ran 32 times for 101 yards. 3.2 ypc. They were doing just fine running. And taking time off the clock, keeping our offense off the field in the process.

And even saying that bortles is terrible you want to put the ball in his hands because they were having moderate success passing the ball?

You want to complain about the jags playing conservative at the end of the first half then I’d agree. They should’ve went for some more points for sure. But their game plan as a whole was the correct one.

I would say that the Patriots defense has feasted on terrible offensive play calling. How many times last year did we see teams run right into the teeth of the defense, call run plays on 3rd and long, forgo the use of bunch formations and motions (things the Patriots struggled with)? I feel like the teams that game plan well, give the Patriots fits. Teams that have trouble running basic offensive plays (many teams in the league BTW) are the ones the Patriots are able to hold to low scores.

Basically, the Patriots defensive philosophy tends to fail when the offensive coach is capable.
But other teams face genius every week?

Thats this defense in a nutshell.

It takes away what the offense is good at and forces them to make plays with a lesser strength or a weakness. Its scheme is to reduce the big play and force teams to be patient offensively

If another team has a great gameplan and executes against it, so be it.

Teams will do things that are unorthodox with the intention of not being too predictable.

Think of it as a boxing match. Hit 'em with the left handed jab, then in Rd5 go right handed jab as the opposing boxer is bleeding over the left eye. Adapt and take advantage.

No it fails when there is a good gameplan and the other team executes and makes plays on the field.

It fails because the Patriots defensive talent isn't good enough. Teams with great defensive talent are able to win individual match ups and the offensive schemes aren't as effective. The Patriots have mediocre defensive talent and people make excuses because they win anyway....meh...I am calling a spade a spade.

Yeah, that darn winning. If only it was not for that darn winning.

Forget winning. Being consistently in the top 10 in points allowed is not failing. You can not accomplish that with mediocre talent.

Yeah, that darn winning. If only it was not for that darn winning.

I remember when the Patriots defense was fairly dominant and really enjoyed that era of football. Maybe you don't remember 2003 and 2004, but I do.

You were so close and still could not put things together. Tragic.

Thanks, I realize Pederson is Reid’s protege. But if the defense “improved” in 2017, they sure as hell didn’t play the RPO any better in the super bowl. That was my point, which you missed.

Yes, time flies, 2014 was a long time ago.

OK so your argument is what? They lack athletic pass rushers, which they had in 2014, but this is the best group since 2014, yet they're not athletic?

The patriots defense is better than average, certainly not mediocre.

I do very well. What does that have to do with our discussion?

You are still missing the point. Both teams with their effectiveness at RPOs were exactly the worst matchup for a defense that could not stop the run. People were talking about this ad nauseaum for 2 weeks before the game.

In the end this game is about matchups and the Eagles had simply more ways to attack our defense than vice versa. This doesn't mean the defense never actually got better on average but just that they were not equipped to deal with this kind of matchup. Or in other words they had to make some plays because the margin for error was non-existant and then nobody stepped up and made those plays.

But to invalidate about 12 games of evidence -- including a AFCCG where the defense saved the day in a game where the offense struggled considerably -- is just wrong. They got better but in the end the scheme changes to address the talent deficit were not enough to make up for it.

They were #1 in points allowed the year before last. What is more dominant than that?

So winning isn’t good enough?
You want style points?

eye-test points allowed?
Eye test= I am irrational and want to complain so I am picking out something that is fine and inventing a reason to cry about it.

The yards argument.

Let’s continue this with the eagles.

The eagle defense allowed 26.1 yards per drive
The patriots defense allowed 34.0 yards per drive.
The extra 7.9 yards per drive added up to 1 point all season (missed PAT)

What Do You Expect From Defensive Scheme?

Nothing. In New England, the scheme doesn't matter: the weaknesses of the defensive players come playoff time is what matters. We have about 18 years of proof of that.
