What Do You Expect From Defensive Scheme?

Peterson exploited the Pats, by going for it over and over again. He basically said, this defense is not good enough to stop us from getting ten yards on four downs and he was right. He also provided the league with the way to beat the Pats is to not play conservative. He was 100% correct that the jags (and the Falcons for that matter) only lost once they started to protect their leads. If they continued to hammer the Pats defense, both of them would have won too.

I fear, that more and more teams will test this theory. Sure one or two times, the Pats might actually make a play on 4th down, but more times than not, I believe this is how teams will play the Patriots from now on.

Don't know what kind of defense we will see this season, but for the Houston game:

- Contain the pocket. It isn't Watson's running ability, it's his ability to improvise. The kid can make throws off the back of his foot and the Houston receivers were pretty good at seeking spaces during broken plays in week 3 last year.

- Bracket Hopkins. (Personally, I'd bracket with Rowe and a safety all game...and let Gillmore take Fuller out of the game)

Those have to be the big two things, IMO.

Those teams had good defenses that had bad games. The Patriots defense was never a good defense and looked like they had looked for stretches during the season.
The eagles allowed 295 points.
34 tds. 31 PAT 20 FGs
The patriots allowed 296 points
33 tds 33 pats 22 FGs

So those 2 missed PATS against the eagles is the difference between a good defense and ine that was never good?
Do the tds they allow not count?

I wonder what would have happened if the Jaguars decided to throw more.

On an average day ? Turnovers by Bortles. Game Over.

That doesn't mean he could not have had a day like Foles where everything just worked out perfectly and they win the game.

I really really hope teams try that against us because we will win more than the 75% if the time we have for the last 18 years.

I welcome it. There is a reason Coaches/teams are conservative. Aggressive play calling works to an extent...just ask Kyle Shanahan about Superbowl 51...they had the game won and should have been up 11 instead of 8 at the end of the 4th....

Exactly. The super bowl defense was pretty much the same defense vs KC.

You are so close to a major breakthrough here. Now what is the connection between KC coached by Reid and the Eagles coached by Pederson ?

What people are also forgetting is that if the NFL diddnt change the catch rule for the SB the pats win that game probably.

He would have gotten nowhere with that approach against a team with the 2015 or 2016 version of Branch. He exploited the absolute abysmal run defense last year. Something which should be a lot harder this year if Shelton can just keep playing like he did in the preseason. If he gets better as he gets more comfortable in the system and the run D improves to 2016 levels then we are in for a great season.

It's weird that everybody wants to talk about Butler's absence up until the point where they argue that the defense actually sucked all season and we just didn't know it until the Super Bowl.

Regarding Peterson, pretty much spot on. He saw the Jacksonville game and wondered why they weren’t more aggressive. I don’t know if this is going to be a blue print going forward though. The 2017 defense is history.

35 minutes TOP for the opponent and 6 for 15 on 3rd down. Not exactly stellar. Sometimes it’s more than just the points.

Jacksonville had a solid offense last year. Borderline top 10 and statistically the best rushing offense in the game.

Their defense accounted for 49 pts (compared to 0 from our defense) so their ppg are scewed a little bit (down to 23 from 26). 23 ppg is still in the top half of the NFL.

I don’t think Butler would have prevented Philly from scoring as many points as they did. I think the Butler absence is an excuse for those who think the defense improved.

They threw 39 times and ran 30. You think bring one dimensional would be better?

More importantly are you seriously trying to argue that the defense was bad because, even though it wasn’t, it might have been if the other team called different plays? Really?

Don't get me started. If that's a week 2 game vs Houston or something that catch is ruled incomplete, if we're thinking about the same one (the RB in the back of the endzone)

I think a Roomba with a traffic cone on it would have been better than having Richards on the field so maybe it would have resulted in at least one more punt or turnover

I don't intend to argue about whether Butler could have helped in his current state on that particular day since that has been beaten to death, but I think it's pretty clear that even just the average Butler performance of the 2017 season would have been helpful. I think people are vastly overstating how much we can judge the 2017 defense as a whole based on one game while completely ignoring the enormous outlier in personnel.

I wonder what would have happened if the Jaguars decided to throw more.

Why would they do that when they had the #1 rushing offense facing our defense which gave up 4.7 ypc?

What’s your point? This team doesn’t have much talent on defense and you sit your starting cornerback.

Heck no. I don’t think philly gets that many points with butler in the game. We play a little aggressive on defense and we maybe some coverage sacks.
