I bet that was exactly what happened.Consider it a blessing. The true danger with Decker was that NE was going to keep a useless guy around purely out of desperation.
Frankly, I wouldn't be surprised if Bill told him that he was in the bottom 10 and had no shot of making the roster, which prompted this decision.
Out of respect for Decker he told him he would not make the team and wanted to give him a chance to catch on somewhere else. Maybe he and Josh told him he is on his last legs as a player and would have a tough time making a club.
Maybe in his heart of hearts Decker knew that but needed someone he trusted to confirm it.
