the one who focuses everything he does on winning championships.
Actually, this is wrong. The strategy has always been as expressed so many times by so many has been to “contend” for championships every year and not go all in for any one season.
If Belichick had not needlessly nickled and dimed Deion Branch, Ty Law and Adam Viniatieri out of town in the mid 2000s, another couple of championships might have been won. Add those 3 players to the 06 team and the Colts don’t win that AFC championship game and Super Bowl. Shipping Richard Seymour to Oakland for a first rounder two years hence sure didn’t help keep together a defense that could win a championship either.
Hmmm. One thing I’ve noticed about those 4 players is that would not allow themselves to be needlessly bullied. I see a pattern there.
The Patriot Way is Tom Brady. Belichick was 5-13 in his tenure as Patriots coach when lightening struck. The offensive Lawrence Taylor arrived on the scene to save Bully Bill’s bacon. A lot of coaches could have won a lot of games and championships with Brady as their QB. We always used to joke that Belichick the GM was killing Belichick the HC. Truth is it was just the reverse.
If you doubt this, imagine these two scenarios. A week from today as the Patriots prepare for TC to start the POTUS hires Bill Belichick to replace Admiral Kelly as WH Chief of Staff. Or, Tom Brady decides to quit football to be a full time male model. What combination do you think would win the most games this season? Hoyer and Belichick? or Brady and McDaniels?
