Patriots comp pick watch

I'm guessing this means no comp pick for RJF - at least for now.

Front office got this

Update, March 26, 2018:

Cameron Fleming has signed with the Cowboys.

So we now have qualifying FA losses:
  • Nate Solder, 3rd, $15M
  • Malcolm Butler, 3rd, $12.2M
  • Danny Amendola, 5th/6th, $6M
  • Dion Lewis, 6th, $5M
  • Johnson Bademosi, 6th/7th, $3.1M
  • Cameron Fleming, 7th(?), $3.5M [incentives do not count in calculations]
  • Ricky Jean-Francois, 7th(?), ???
Qualifying FA gains:
  • Adrian Clayborn, $6M
  • Jeremy Hill, $1.5M
  • Matt Tobin does NOT qualify
Importantly, if Jean-Francois's contract qualifies, one of two things will happen:
  • If it's smaller than Bademosi's, Hill will cancel out Jean-Francois, and the Pats will be in line for a pick for Bademosi.
  • If it's larger than Bademosi's, Hill will cancel out Bademosi, and the Pats will get a pick for Jean-Francois.
The Patriots now have a net loss of five free agents. Because comp picks are limited to four per team, the Pats will receive picks for the four most valuable players remaining. Right now, that would be Solder, Butler, and Lewis for certain, and one of Bademosi, Fleming, and Jean-Francois (remember one of these three will be canceled out by Hill).

The best-case scenario for the Pats, as of today, is still two 3s and two 6s. I'll be a bit less optimistic right now, and predict two 3s, a 6, and a 7.

who did Francois sign with?

People all excited over 3rd round comp picks but don’t you worry we might use them on another Jake Bequette, Tyrone McKenzie, Shawn Crable, Taylor Price, Ryan Mallet, Kevin OConnell, Geneo Grissom?

Or Trey Flowers who went a couple of picks after Grissom. Not sure what is wrong with some of you.

Flowers is great. How are you gonna react when he walks in FA next year cause he wants 9-10 million per year?

Flowers was chosen in the 4th round.
As I said, what's wrong with some of you? You think I don't know that? And what's the difference between a very late #3 and 4.2?

Free agency makes the NFL just like college football. You are only guaranteed
to have a player four or five years. There is no use crying about losing players.

if that's his market team will surely want to keep him.

The Pats may want to keep him, but perhaps also not willing to pay that price.

The Pats have Davis and Lee already on the roster and (hypothetically, at least) contending for the potential future open roster spot, and they may add another contender (or two) during draft weekend. Meanwhile, they also have Clayborn signed for two years as insurance/bridge between Flowers and his replacement.

Alternatively, BB could have decided to reconfigure the defense so that the 3-4/2-gap aspects are much more greatly emphasized over the 4-3 aspects, thus significantly reducing the need to replace Flowers at all for 2019.

Lots of different ways this could go and we may not even realize that it's gone that way until 2019.
