Browns trade Shelton to Patriots

Not sure about that.

IDK.

At this point, the odds seem significantly greater that Shelton succeeds rather than faceplants.

His 5th-year option will cost the Pats "around $7M" (according to Miguel), so the Pats would be getting two seasons of Shelton for around $9M total ($4.5 APY). That's only slightly more than Branch's last extension ($4.2M APY), and Shelton is 8 years younger.

I loved the trade initially, now I like it even more!

“Specifically with the 6-foot-2, 335-pound Shelton, the elite trait is his size/strength combination, which fits better in a two-gap defense such as New England's than the Browns' 4-3 scheme. I spoke with someone in Cleveland who has a deep background with Shelton. Here were a few notes from that conversation...”

  • He can be a dominant player against the run who regularly commands double-teams, making others' jobs easier.

  • He plays with an edge and nasty streak: “You’re not going to whip his ass, but he’ll probably whip yours.”

  • The big question is what to do on third down, because he is not a pass-rusher, which also ties into how to value him from a financial standpoint.

  • He practices hard and plays hard, although his temper has bitten him at times in the past.
Picking late, Patriots look elsewhere for elite traits -- such as Danny Shelton deal

Size, strength, smarts, technique ..... and attitude? Yeah, I think he checks all the boxes.

Ideally I'd like to see him in the system first but they do not have that luxury .

Your AAV scenario makes complete sense.

My preference is to get him in a 3 year deal w $7m guarantees and spread the cap hit.

If they pick up the option I assume they can redo his deal and spread the cap hit?

Yeah, they pick up his option now so that they have him under contract at a fairly reasonable price for 2019. They see what they have with him this season, and then have a couple-three different ways they can go with him this time next year - extend him, trade him, or just have him play out 2019 and re-visit his situation in the spring of 2020 (when he may or may not be more expensive to retain on a long-term deal).

They'll have the same choices with Shelton (and Brown) next spring that they have with Cooks at the moment. Of course, Cooks is already likely to be more expensive on a long-term deal than either Shelton or Brown will be next spring.

Still, extending a guy who's entering his option year can often reduce his cap hit for that year while ballooning his cap hits for succeeding years, but that only works for players who were drafted from #11 thru #32 (like Cooks at #20) because their option year compensation is the average of the top-25 at their position. It went the other way for Mike Evans because the option year pay for a player drafted at #10 and above is the average of the top-10 players at their position (Evans was drafted at #4, IIRC).

Gabriel had 33 catches for 378 yards last year...in a very good offense with a good QB. World-beater, I tell ya.

so basically triple the catches, double the yards vs PD who was playing with the 12.... so yeah better than Dorsett by a mile

so let me guess, he makes up for it by blocking?

Regarding point #3 by Reiss, good thing we have the rookie leader in QB pressures at DT.

Danny Shelton gets us to more 3rd & 6+ & Adam Butler enters the field. Boom. Definitely another underrated problem in the SB was that Reiss said postgame Butler/Wise barely played since it was always 3rd & short rather than 3rd & 5+.

Wow. I was unaware of the fact they barely played.

Obviously, the Pats acquired Shelton in response to Lane Johnson's comments about the Pats player having no fun.

Seriously, though, I could see this guy and Gronk becoming instant buds.

Not that I usually care too much about it but someone posted a link to his Instagram. I honestly hope he makes it because from what I have seen there and from ingame videos he seems to be a genuinely great person to be around. I think that our business like locker room can use a fresh influx of people like that.. who adopts dogs and just enjoy life..

Reminds me of Blount..

I disagree. The front is set now. Focus on the LB's. The front has two rotational big bodies in VV and Shelton + Brown, Guy and Butler as DL's. That's solid as hell.

Hightower, T. Flowers as LB/DE's.. + Rivers??

That's looking pretty damn good to me.
Can’t agree on the DE’s being set. We have no clue what Rivers is, HT doesn’t stay healthy, and Flowers is good player, but it’s not like he’s dominating or anything.

We’d be foolish to rely solely on mid round level guys developing next season. We need further reinforcements.

I thought we were set last year at DE, then Ealy bummed out and Nink retired. Your perspective would change pretty quickly if Rivers doesn’t pan out.

Seems like a fun guy.

I know it's a mic'd up youtube about how fun he is, but it's concerning that the first highlight of him - played twice - is him eating up a double-team but not really getting close to the ball (ie, not even in the neighborhood of batting it down) or getting close to the QB, and it appears to be a completed pass play. The angle's tough to judge on those "didn't get close" calls, but that's the highlight? Yes he did command a double-team, but either I don't understand line play well enough (quite likely), or it's scary to see the "promo vid" being about how fun he is.

Now I will say this, he apparently has enough energy to do little dances when not on the field, so that makes you guess high motor for a big guy. But if he does that and is flagging before other guys, let's go with "no fun."

The other highlight was how excited he was on the sideline when he wasn't in the game, and somebody else intercepted the ball. I mean, that's better than sulking about not personally being in on the play... but dang.

Okay all that said, I like the quotes about him, in BB I trust, and let's see how he fits in. If he's not all that at DT, well, he's always got a future as a backup QB for the Gintz :D

OTOH, there really wasn't much to celebrate on the Browns last season aside from life's little victories. In order to be happy in that kind of circumstance, the guy has to be either very well-adjusted or a total whack-job.

Anyway, I like is first step. I didn't like the way he played "tall" at times and lost leverage, but that's a fixable technique issue.

Bet he gets cut or injured before the season starts...lol:D:p

People posting highlight clips of this 1st round bust...ever think the guys Shelton's going up against are thinking, "its Cleveland I can take 80% of my plays off vs this bust and we'll still win"?
