This is about something that happened last week, but I don't recall any discussion about it.

With accusations against Patriots, John Tomase confirms reality is upside down

Apparently Thomase called out 5 Patriot players by name as taking PEDs. Never even claimed to have any proof other than he's been in the locker room. Of course, he also says he hasn't been in the locker room for 8 years because he's not welcome there (I wonder why?).

How the hell does this guy stay employed? He's a lying, plagiarizing scum bag. Why would any media company want to attach their name to his?

All it will take is 1 defamation suit and stop like this goes away forever. I honestly have no idea how they get away with this.

Eff him. He needs to be fired yesterday. Or sooner.

If he wants to write stufflike that, he should be working for a paper in Ohio. Or Pennsylvania.

Mods: we need a super-merge thread titled something like "The thread for stupid stuff said about the Pats in the Media"

Then we can fold in everything from
Tomase said this,
to Ray Lewis said this,
to Kurt Warner said this,
to Marshall Faulk said this, etc.

That way the board is not cluttered with 20 threads about what stupid people are saying that ticks Patriots fans off.

Yes please

Love articles that call out Thomase's BS. He would have made a great tabloid reporter back in the 80s and 90s.

I hate WEEI. The other hosts are like oh he just made a mistake. he shouldn't have to pay forever.

NO. He made a choice to run a story he knew was not corroborated because it suited his career. If it pans out he wins. It was a bet, a gamble, it was done with full knowledge that there was no corroboration. The one thing it was not was a mistake, it was a calculated choice. I want to figuratively smack the WEEI apologists who call it a mistake.

I doubt Tomase has ever even kissed a girl, too. What a loser he is.

im hoping those 5 players sue him for slander.

Rollo Tomase...lmao

Why hasn't anyone ever thought of this??

Oh, because almost impossible to convict someone unless you can prove that it lead to a loss of livelihood or irreparable harm. I believe for a libel case to succeed, the following need to be proven:
  • published
  • false
  • injurious
  • unprivileged
It's easy enough to prove the first two, I suppose, but unless these players are fired by the Patriots and suspended by the NFL, then there's zero chance that the "injurious" portion qualifies. It's just not worth the effort to undertake a lawsuit.

As an aside: perhaps you should go back and read Curran's piece now, since he gave an excellent defense for the Patriots self-governing efforts regarding supplements.

After the game, all NE players and staff should simply give "no comment" answers to all questions asked by any WEEI employee, and then continue that going forward. Don't give any reason for it - let WEEI draw its own conclusions. And NE should just refund WEEI its money and stop having BB and Brady on the station. No need to make any public statements. Just do it.

Don't bar their reporters from press conferences and like - just freeze them out.

They don't need to be punished by the NFL or NE for it to be "injurious". Losing endorsements would suffice.

But the bigger problem is that for public figures proving it false is not sufficient. The plaintiff needs to prove that the utterer knew it was false or that the utterer uttered it with a reckless disregard of whether or not it was false. That turns out to be a pretty high bar in practice.

All I know is, if you knowingly print something that is a lie, it's defamation and is punishable by law. People have won these cases.

The key to a defamation case, is the discovery process. It's highly likely he has stuff on his phone and computer, that cover the idea of intent and knowledge that what he prints is a complete falsehood, because it's likely his boss is telling him to use the premises he uses in his pieces.

It's unlikely all those communications are done in person, too.

Throw in his Walkthrough tape lie and you could actually show a pattern of this behavior, as well.

The reason why those cases aren't popular is because they are super expensive, but I don't get why Kraft just sits there.

Again, when does it end?
