I'd like to call attention to a fun exercise that's been started over on Reddit at r/Patriots,

Ultimate Patriots Super Bowl Roster

Go and vote for your all-time roster. Fun debate to be had.

I felt like it's particularly hard to only select 3 LB and 3 WR because it forces you to leave off some pretty incredible performers.

My Roster: (1st alternative in parenthesis)

Backup QB: Garoppolo
RB: Dillon & White (Lewis)
WR: Moss, Edelman, Branch (Welker)
TE: Gronk
OL: Solder, Mankins, Koppen, Mason, Cannon (Light)

DL: Seymour, Flowers, Wilfork, Ninkovich, (Branch)
LB: McGinest, Hightower, Vrabel (Bruschi/Mayo)
CB: Law, Gilmore (Butler)
S: McCourty, Harrison (Milloy/Harmon)

K: Gostkowski

Yeah the LB is really hard. I couldn't leave Hightower off, given how huge some of his plays have been with respect to winning Superbowls.

Here’s mine..

QB: Jimmy G
RB: K Faulk& C Dillon
WR: Moss, Welker, Edelman
TE: Lord Gronk
OL: Light, Mankins, Andrews, Mason, Cannon

DL: Seymour, Vince, Warren, Ninkovich
LBs:Willie, Tedy, High.
CB: Law, Revis
S: D-Mac& Rodney

K: Vinatieri - Simply the best.

Hardest positions for me was corners and Linebackers. In the end linebackers I went for the guys who had the most impact for us in the Playoffs and Superbowls.

Willie - Sack Machine
Tedy - Gets Picks, solid when we needed him.
HT - Two ridiculous game changing tackles and sacks.

Corners; I went for the best ones I’ve seen.

Law - Is the perfect corner for BB, imagine BB would like to have Law in every game for the patriots, as he was the perfect corner for
Us.

Revis: Lockdown, Shutdown. I know his stay was short and sweet, but when he was here he was exceptionally good. He’s arguably the greatest corner I have watched. The only time I’ve seen him really poor when he was in his prime was agaisnt Randy..

My roster: ( 1st alternative in parenthesis)

Starting QB: Thomas Brady ( Bledsoe)

Starting RB: Dillion ( Lewis)

WR: Moss, Branch, and Troy Brown (Edelman).

TE: Gronk ( Aaron Hernandez)

OL: Light, Solder, Mankins, Koppen ( Cannon)

DL: Seymour, Nink, Big Vince

LB: McGinest, Bruschi, Vrabel, ( HT)

CB: Samuel, and struggling to decide who to put between Law & Butler.

S: Milloy, Harrison ( McCourty)

K: AV ( Ghost)

Coach: BB ( Parcells)

DC: Crennel ( MP)

OC: Weiss ( McD)

Reason for picking Bledsoe over JG for backup QB: Simply because Bledsoe put this team on the map. He was a great QB.

Reason Welker was left off: He wasn't clutch in big games like Edelman & Troy Brown. Fair or not, I remember Welker dropping the SB 46 pass and being 0-3 in SB's.

Reason HT was left off: his career is only a few years old. Yes, he made the tackle on Lynch & the sack of Ryan. But he needs more time. Bruschi made a huge play in the snow on Oakland on third and 1 that really opened the door to a win. Plus the play against Indy in the playoffs to force a turnover. Vrabel was a great player too. Him hitting Warner to lead to the pick six, and the SB 38 TD stand out. Willie M was the best of the three.

Reason for Weiss over McDaniels: Because Weiss was 3-0. Furthermore, he made ( along with BB) the call to let Brady do his thing with 1:20 left in SB 36. McDaniels is great...but that SB 42 play calling was....not good.

Holy crap this is hard!

QB: Brady (Garoppolo)
RB: Dillon, White
WR: Moss, Welker, Edelman
TE: Gronkowski
OL: Light, Solder, Mankins, Neal, Koppen

DL: Wilfork, Seymour, Warren
LB: Vrabel, Bruschi, Hightower, McGinest
CB: Law, Revis
S: McCourty, Harrison

K: Vinatieri
P: Allen
KR: Hobbs
PR: Edelman
ST: Slater

Already having second thoughts on some of these too.

Is this for one Super Bowl game? If so, put me down for Amendola at WR4 and remove Welker. Moss-Edelman-Brown-Amendola.

Assuming you only get them when the players actually were Patriots. So no pre-ACL Revis.

(QB) Brady, Garopollo
(RB) Dillon, Lewis. Lewis can be both a lead and 3rd down back.
(WR) Moss, Cooks, Welker --- Can you imagine trying to defend Moss and Cooks at the same time? And Cooks put the hurt on a CB making 13m+ a year in the AFCCG. Every stat says you take Welker over Edelman(but the heart says Edelman:()
(TE) Gronk
(OL) Solder-Mankins-Andrews-Waters-Vollmer. Waters was a beast in 2011. Andrews-Brady are 38-4(including playoffs)

(DL) Seymour-Wilfork-Washington-Flowers
(LB) Hightower-Mayo-Collins... Maybe I'm failing leaving out one of the old school guys. But I think that would be a beast LB combo, every piece with a role, assuming 2014-2015 Collins.
(CB) Law, Gilmore... Gilmore over 2014 Revis
(S) McCourty, Harrison
(K) Gostowski

For 1 game for a WR I'd find a way to put in Super Bowl MVP Deion Branch in there!

Yeah I think WR is really hard. Everyone wants Randy in there - him and the GOAT and Gronk all on the field at the same time would be.... wow.

Then you really can't go wrong with Welker/Edelman/Amendola/Brown/Branch. I like Edelman and Branch, given the "all superbowl squad" nature of the question and those two have some major Superbowl cred.

Saw Cooks thrown in there too - he's been good this year - would love it if he turned into a Superbowl legend in 10 days.

Yeah I'm thinking you take the guy as he was when he was on a Superbowl team, so we're talking Superbowl XLIX Revis.

Great call on Waters. Amazing they were able to pick him up on September 4th That year! He was incredible. As an aside, I didn't realize that he'd won the Walter Payton Award in 2009.

I put the same secondary in as you. Not sure if that means I'm overrating Gilmore (hope not). Lots of Asante Samuel picks are likely - not a personal favorite but a really good player, nonetheless.

To me perhaps the biggest difficulty in compiling one of these 'all-time lists' is to remember to differentiate between a player's time with the Patriots, and that player's time throughout the rest of his pro football career.

Junior Seau, Vinny Testaverde, Doug Flutie and many others would be examples.

With that in mind, here's a near-zero-thought listing:

QB: Tom Brady, Matt Cassel
RB: Corey Dillon, Antowain Smith
FB: James Develin
WR: Wes Welker, Julian Edelman, Randy Moss, Deion Branch
TE: Rob Gronkowski, Ben Watson
OL: Matt Light, Logan Mankins, Dan Koppen, Steven Neal, Sebastian Vollmer

DL: Richard Seymour, Vince Wilfork, Ted Washington, Trey Flowers
LB: Willie McGinest, Dont'a Hightower, Jerod Mayo, Tedy Bruschi
S: Devin McCourty, Rodney Harrison
CB: Ty Law, Asante Samuel

K: Stephen Gostkowski
P: Ryan Allen
LS: Lonie Paxton
ST: Matt Slater

* Depending on formation there are eight 'front seven' players, not 7.
** That is 32 players if my math is correct. The rest of the roster:

RB: Kevin Faulk, Dion Lewis, Danny Woodhead
WR: Troy Brown
TE: Martellus Bennett
OL: Nate Solder, Brian Waters, David Andrews, Shaq Mason, Marcus Cannon

DL: Rob Ninkovich, Ty Warren, Chandler Jones
LB: Mike Vrabel, Ted Johnson, Jamie Collins, Roosevelt Colvin
S: Patrick Chung, Lawyer Milloy
CB: Darrelle Revis, Logan Ryan

That's 21 more, for your 53-man roster (minus focus on special teams).
