It's more painful to not bet on my team and see them cover the huge spread than it is to lose money. I'd rather give money to the casino than feel like I didn't believe.

But I also don't really gamble, I spend. Every year except this one for a while now I've made more than I've spent. Just a bad year this year with some of my biggest bets going against me ($1k on the first game for instance)

I generally stay away from Pats games. In the playoffs I traditionally put 5-7 units against them to feel better about lost games. And if they win I dont really care about the lost money. I know this is something many people dont agree with but rather have some kind of silver lining when the season ends and we get to wait half a year before there is a meaningful game again.
