Six For Saturday: Brady in a No-Win Situation Moving Forward

I think the title of the article overstates the effect the Garoppolites (if even half of them are actual Pats fans is debatable) have on Brady's psyche. They annoy us quite a bit here on the site, but TFB has shut out much bigger distractions with much bigger questions about his legacy in the past.

This article is excellent. It is a very balanced appraisal in my opinion. The last section about the "No-Win" situation Brady is sort of in now was tough to read but sounds accurate to me.

Hopefully he does just go out and win every Super Bowl now until he retires.

Ian-

From the title I feared you had fallen into a dreaded melancholy over all the negative press this week, and had succumbed to the tide. I was preparing an emergency response of clowns and balloons to your house, or at least a visit from Mark Wahlberg, Matt Damon and Ben Affleck to help you find your way back to Patriot joy.

Brady has hate nationally (especially last year when he ripped out the hearts of naysayers with that comeback performance when all were certain he had faced and met his doom on the largest stage), and every nitwit salivates for the day he actually ceases to be Brady. He has always aspired for rings, so I doubt this news changes anything.

I personally like this TB12 project, because I expect he knows that project prospers into the indefinite future if he goes further and plays better. At this point, I doubt the noise means anything to him as he has endured 2 rounds of cheating claims and constant batteries of why he should not get credit for all his accomplishments. I expect he has conditioned himself to not listen to the stupidity.

With all respect, I HATE the TB12 project and what it has become, and what it so obviously has done to Belichick and the team in general. Even even half of the ESPN report is true I fear TB12 has done some weird damage to the team. And as Ian wrote that some of the reports of players being torn between listening to Belichick or Brady/TB12 seem to be believable.

I am not talking about his diet and workout regimes, do whatever works. But the need to preach it over the team and cause division in the greatest Sports Dynasty of all time is a disgusting legacy for something as silly as following Alex Guerrero.

It is definitely a mixed bag in terms of effect. If Belichick wanted to (and I have no doubt he would if it undercuts his authority), then he could mandate that the team stay way from the facility. I still suspect much of the concern is more a product of salary cap concerns - specifically TB12 is illegal compensation for Brady that permits a lower salary cap hit for Brady offset by earnings channeled through TB12. It was alleged last year, so it is an ongoing concern.

2009 showed Belichick has no problem laying down the law. If it were a major issue effecting the team, then I expect he would mandate it out and let Brady do his thing. If the Pats players routinely fight the staff trainers and a program endorsed by Belichick, then I would expect Belichick would drop the hammer on Brady and tell him he can do whatever he likes with his trainer, but Patriots players are off limits. Belichick is not hated, but he is the law and knows how to win. Anything that impedes him will not be long in that organization. I have no doubt of that with him as head coach.

I don't otherwise see it as any different than the Type A personality who pushes vegan diets on you and touts the benefits. I doubt Patriots players would follow those regimens unless they believed it, and ignore it otherwise. It wouldn't seem to be the type of thing pitting TB12 players against the rest of the team or organization. These athletes can judge for themselves as they understand training, recovery and results and do what works for them.

Article gives way more credence to Wickersham than I would have expected. I would have taken the approach if ferreting out the outright lies, misrepresentations and sensationalist stretches and see beat writers having basically debunked d retrying in the article rather than Wickersham sources may have misinterpreted.

If you listen to the local reporters, belichick has always suppported Guerrero’s training methods. He has always supported Guerrero, hell he had unprecedented access for 10 years.
But there was a conflict between the Patriots training staff and Guerrero so belichick needed to act. How this has anything to do with belichick and Brady is beyond me. Guerrero overstepped his bounds so B.B. backed him off. Do we really think brady is ****ed off because belichick didn’t let his buddy get in the way of the trainers doing their job?

This news of Belichick still being tough on Brady isn’t news either. New York Post writer Gary Myers documented in his book “Brady Vs Manning, The Untold Story of the Rivalry That Transformed the NFL,” how “Belichick would intentionally resist praising Brady for individual records, finally relenting only when he surpassed 50,000 yards.

FWIW Myers is a huge Brady fan and not much of a Belichick fan at all. I’m sure that slants his stories about this team.

Good article. One key point that gets overlooked about item 2 regarding the contract extension is that Wickersham claims that it set up 2018 as a key decision to choose between Brady and his $22M cap hit and Jimmy G.

But based on the structure of the extension, it would have resulted in a dead money cap hit of $14M if they got rid of Brady in 2018. So the extension wasn't really structured to set up for a potential decision If anything, the opposite is true, and that extension made it more likely to keep Brady as it would be difficult to move on without incurring a severe penalty.

it should be noted that Robert kraft has blown up one of Wickershams central pieces.
Kraft says his involvement with the jimmy g trade was a staff meeting in June then a call from B.B. saying he had a trade he wants to make. Not a conversation in between. And the half day meeting/edict is a total fabrication.

there will now be the section of his fan base lamenting over his former teammate’s success while viewing anything short of a Lombardi trophy as a failure.

The teammate success part is new but the failure part isn't.

Believing Kraft spouts only total truths is naive. A great appeaser....or as Krafty calls himself....a consensus builder .....works both sides of the room and now I suspect he's working overtime to avoid the wrath of his fans...a la Deflategate.
Sure, Bob has built up tremendous good will over the years.....but years ago ...his secret unspoken word was "Hartford" until it wasn't.
Personally....I would have to think a decision on the team's long term QB future required a bit more than a quick turn around the conference table and then a dash for the doors.
I guess TB's future was just one of many items on that meeting's agenda?
Laughable

Wow. You are incredibly gullible. What a ridiculous post.

So you think Wickersham who has basically had everything in the article debunked is telling the truth and kraft is lying?

Therefore you also think that B.B. would dump the GOAT playing at an MVP level for an unproven Jimmy.

Further you believe that after the success belichick has had and knoeing who belichick is that kraft will tell him how to do his job and he will say “yes sir, sorry I lost my head.” And just move along.

Brady’s future is that he is the GOAT and MVP and wants to keep playing. That doesn’t require a meeting.
How to deal with the backups expiring contract would be an agenda item in a management meeting, and clearly one that was entrusted to B.B. and his decision approved when it was finalized 4 months later.

Pretty simple stuff.

I'm not sure how I feel about the TB12 project. On one hand I want to see everyone associated with the team scratching for every possible advantage. If avocado ice cream and weird meal plans and pliability exercises might offer an advantage I want every player on the roster to consider those tools.

But I want it to be because they work, empirically not just as placebos.

And I certainly don't want it to turn into a clique or cult that divides the team and makes those who find the diet may not work for their bodily chemistry outcasts because they're not part of the cool kids lunch group any more. It clearly passed the point where peer pressure is causing conflict within the team. That to me is a problem, and makes me worry that team chemistry is being imperiled. I'm starting to think that the downside from that is likely to outweigh the benefits of broader team participation.

The question I ask is how would Wickersham secure the inside scoop on the meeting where Kraft told Belichick he had to keep Brady and trade Jimmy G? Are we to believe that BB purposely leaked this information to staffers/friends knowing the media storm it would create? A man who does not even want to tell us what he was thinking on 3rd and 4 is now going to blab to staffers/confidants/media that he was forced to make a decision he did not want to make? It just does not pass the sniff test.

He really couldn't come up with any great answers when he was grilled by Dale & Holley.

This might be way out in left field, but I wonder if the author of the story would go on Boston sports radio and answer questions?
You talking about Wikersham? He did yesterday, Dale and Holley made him look like a clown.

JG throws 5 int's and wins all 5 games and the Garappolites see the wins. So do I.

TB throws 8 int's and wins 13 games, secures the #1 seed and the Garappolites see the int's. WTF??

Once you realize that trading JG was the only realistic choice the rest of Seth's anonymously sourced article becomes a worthless bunch of drama queen hawt takes.

"Brady is butt hurt because he hasn't won Patriot of the week"?? Really??

Brady's last year included his mother beating cancer, winning the SB with the greatest comeback of all time and collected another SB MVP trophy. On top of that he is now the only QB with 5 rings, shoved defamegate up Roger's ass and forced the mediots to declare him GOAT. I'm sure Brady is in a pretty happy place.

What are these asshats going to say when BB and Brady hug after another SB championship win??

I'll tell you what they'll say. They'll pull the same clique bs out of their asses as Seth n crew have pulled with this crap:

"Where there's smoke there's fire" will turn into "Winning cures everything"

BB isn't going anywhere. He's too old to install a culture, system and personnel into another team.

TB isn't going anywhere. He's literally playing at an MVP level.

RK isn't going anywhere. He owns the F'ing team.

The media had no controversy to create clicks with so they invented one. Took a bunch of chicken clucking BS, added their two cents, threw in a few elaborations, sited anonymous sources and Voilà you have story.
