2018 Draft Prospect Thread

Not a fan of Falk. Fell off the bandwagon in the middle of the year.

Davenport has been a binky for a while now. Profiled him in my rush thread. He's a baby growing into his body that does community work. Standing up/hand in dirt. Power, ability to get flat, hands. Athletic background.

1. Falk had a broken wrist since week two apparently so a drop off isn’t that surprising.
2. I like Davenport but on limited watching he seems to be a speed to power guy only at the moment. Will watch some more.

My two favorites in this draft are Barkley and Derwin James. Those 2 are going to be great.

James, Fitzpatrick, and Barkley To me are the best non QB talents in this draft. All 3 worth of
a top spot

Last year it was Adams vs hooker at safety
This year James vs Fitzpatrick. I like James better

I’ll probably get round to them because this looks like a nice draft at the top but as they’re probably never going to be available to the Pats, I’ll hold off for a while. I have a lot of catching up to do.

Just started watching prospects (still early looks (1 or 2 game films)

1. Luke Falk - Like him a fair bit. Good Pats fit.

2. Rashaan Evans - Can see why Reamer and Evans like him so much. I think he’s a good Pats fit but I don’t love him as much as they do although still very early. I think I liked Jarrad Davis more. That might change as Evans has some excellent traits.

3. Tremaine Edmunds - Two games in And ugh. Too slow to be a significant starter and doesn’t impact the game enough. Thought he might be a Zach Cunningham who, despite his flaws, I thought was an influential LB. Edmunds is not that good.

4. Marcus Davenport - Intriguing. Looks raw but the athleticism and power is definitely there. Would like to see him as a linebacker for the Pats rather than a DE.

As for needs, I’d take LB, QB and either a pass rush capable linebacker, strong safety or DE with the other pick.

Fell off the Falk bandwagon mid year. No internal clock, wilts under pressure, arm at imo won' be able to make consistent NFL throws. He won't have the spacing hes seeing now imo.

Davenport (along with Duke & Hercules) has been a binky for a while. Versatile. Power, ability to get flat, hands, few decent moves. Only a baby 21 that's just growing into his body. Does community work. Profiled him in my rush thread.

I hope no one picks him with immediate starter production, impact type notions. He needs some coaching but there's so much there.

I agree with this but I wonder if that’s a first round pick for the Pats. Maybe with the SF pick a la Jamie Collins (early 2nd rounder). How do you feel about him as an OLB rather than a DE?

Aware of the injury but that doesn't change what I saw in 2016 either.

At times he has very nice placement but the system and spacing help him so much.

Lots of tipped, close passes that become ints or incomp at the next level.

Again I don't see a QB with a clock.

Not my guy I guess

Standing up def helps him key on which block is coming. Gives his burst/twitch that much more power.
I've seen him change direction chasing QB'S & RB's on misdirections/rpo on several

I wouldn't ask or expect him to cover anything outside of 5 yards from the flat but he looks comfortable in that area covering checkdowns or again chasing after an rpo.

Lacrosse alert

Also top scholar/athlete in CFB.

I see Micah Kiser as an Elndon Roberts/Harvey Lange type - character that the Pats would love, good and solid and more of a traditional linebacker.

So, is this Nick Caserio is the question:

He’s just increased his stock,” said Mendenhall. “We had a player personnel director from a very prominent NFL team that was just here and it wasn’t just an area scout or regional scout, it was the director of player personnel.

“This was just recently and he said that in his opinion, he’s the best linebacker in college football based on what he’s seen this year.

NFL has eyes fixed on UVa's Micah Kiser

Id have no problem taking him in the 1st with Bill. Hed be his pet project bc he's so young and raw.

I’ve seen him with a couple of nice coverages down field. I think he could play the role Rob Ninkovich did in his last year with a view to being a Chandler Jones type in the future. BB like athleticism and versatility - he ticks those boxes for me. But I see him as a 2nd rounder rather than a 1st for the Pats.

Does B.B. take “young and raw” in the first though? That’s where my doubt lies.

Fitzpatrick is going to be a stud in the NFL, they ask him to do so much at Bama that you don't really get to see the strengths of his game shine as much as you should.

Chandler Jones was as raw as they come. He was the definiton of a project and really only started coming into his own towards his end with us. Now a legit top 5-10 pass rusher.

Not sure I agree with that. He wasn’t the finished product that we see now (hat tip to Mike Matlock though who said he’d be the best defensive player in the draft) but he had enough to be a significant contributor in year one. I’d have gone with Nate Solder personally as the closest example.

Thoughts?

Some underappreciated draft prospects who could rise to the first round: N.C. State running back Jaylen Samuels, Maryland wide receiver DJ Moore, UTEP guard Will Hernandez, Rutgers defensive end Kemoko Turay, North Carolina cornerback M.J. Stewart and San Diego State cornerback Kameron Kelly.

I was going to ask a couple of questions about Samuels anyway so here goes:

1. What’s the score with his character concerns. If I remember a year ago, they were quite severe.
2. How do you see him on the roster, as a RB or TE. Presumably he’d be a n03 TE behind Gronk and a blocking/receiving TE which seems to have been the roster building strategy of recents years (Dwayne Allen, Martellus). As a RB, presumably he’d be battling White or Burkhead for snaps.

NFL Draft rumors: Josh Rosen, Sam Darnold declare for draft; teams love Baker Mayfield

Yes but you brought drafting someone young & raw. How the preformed in year one and beyond isn't the focus.

Chandler Jones fits that to a T as a draft pick. At least imo.

I'd argue Mankins to an extent as well.

DMC?

I don't remember anything rn?

I'd say RB/WR would be the best way to utilize him.

Was a huge fan of Engram & Kittle for.that move/flex spot

DMC was about as ready as they come. Agree to disagree on Jones. Mankins was before my time.

I think we were all big fans of Kittle - nice to see him linking up well with Jimmy G, that was a future I think we were all hoping for.

Jones was a lanky kid that had no idea what he was doing in terms of passing rushing. Again he just started coming into his own 3-4 years ago.

DMC underwent a position change for a reason at CB.

No problem agreeing to disagree though. I could very well be wrong.
