2018 Draft Prospect Thread

Still finalizing my viewing lists. Been busy with the 3 month old. I'll have a better handle on things after the Senior Bowl, probably.

So far I'm locked in on Evans at linebacker. I think he's a slam dunk in our scheme. I'll try to throw together a basic position ranking and edit this post in a bit, but it's pretty incomplete (and I'm not even touching guys who will go top 25; not fair to expect them to fall, although realistically some are always available). Just because they're on the list doesn't mean I'm a big fan -- it just means I haven't discarded them yet. Likewise, if they're not on the list, it doesn't mean I don't like them -- I just haven't even come close to finishing my evaluations this year.

@BaconGrundleCandy Still a work in progress . . .

Of all the great draft names over the years, this might be the best. Weston Steelhammer might have something to say about that though.

@Snooky97 will probably disagree with me (sorry bud!) but I think that Evans would do more for our defense. I really like Carter, but I see him as more of hybrid LB / EDGE player, and we just added one of those last year in Derek Rivers. Rivers is significantly more refined as a pass rusher, while Carter is more experienced in space, but they'd have some overlap. Don't forget that Shea McClellin is coming back, too, and he occupies the same general space in the scheme.

Evans can be a true ILB / OLB player, who can also occasionally line up and play on the end of the line, whether standing up or with his hand in the dirt. I think he's almost identical to CJ Mosely, right down to wearing #32, and Mosely has been a three-time Pro Bowler since he was drafted a few years ago at #17 overall. Look at their college tape: the role is similar, their size is identical, their speed and play recognition look comparable -- if anything, Evans seems to close even faster.

I try not to get too tied to a prospect, since there's such a low likelihood of the Patriots drafting my guy, but Evans just seems like a natural fit. Now, he may end up testing very well, and his market value will go up until he's drafted in the same range as Mosely; if that's the case, then we'll adapt, and I'm sure the defense would be fine. I'm not worried about value just yet. Evans is a great scheme fit though, as far as I can tell, so he's high on my list.

If I’m being honest I didn’t see a lot of film of Evans so spent my whole day watching film on him.. but yes the guy is brilliant. The versatility he would give us would give us so much flexibility for HT and others around him.

I rate Evans more than Mosley, seems to time his Blitz’s really well from some of the footage I have seen. If we do end up with Evans I am not going to be upset by it, the guy is good, very good. Not sure who I prefer more of Evans or Smith.. think Smith is slightly ahead of him just by a bit because of coverage but there’s not a lot. I’m hoping lots of QBs and WRs get drafted and a lot of players will fall.. see Reuben Foster last year.

I never seen a lot of rivers from a footage perspective so cannot comment on him compared to Lorenzo. If they are similar and have the same skill set, I agree I wouldn’t waste the pick on him if it happens.. one person I’m looking at is Denzal Ward, think he plays for Ohio State seems very good. Potentially a Butler replacement?

If Lorenzo is there for our other 2nd pick I feel it would be hard to say no to him in that spot.. especially after the depth of linebacker we had this year and we have struggled in aspects.

I’m going to look at safety’s as well as we’re going to start thinking about a D-Mac replacement...

@reamer once again I have gone completely off topic.. but yeah I’d take Evans if he’s there with our first round pick.

My linebackers top three for pats;
1. Evans
2. Carter..
3. Jefferson - Jamie Collins 2.0 hopefully will listen to BB

I think we can get both!

If bb can get both and vea, then that would be an incredible draft magic act!!!!

I can’t see us being able to get vita.. which is gutting. Potentially we could get Da’ron Payne instead.

If BB can get all three, it would be an amazing draft.

Two things: I skipped the top 20 - 30 prospects, so you may want to consult a more traditional rankings system. Second, I want the Rams to draft Hercules, so he can line up next to: Samson Ebukam

I've seen the top rankings. It looks like another good draft that could match last years, at least at the top level.

Lamar Jackson entering the draft. I would like to see bill get his hands on one of these QBs. Maybe Lock comes out.

I like the lad from LSU but haven’t seen a lot of footage of him but the bits I have he looks good..

I should probably update my receiver rankings. Finally got to do more work on DJ Moore. Tough, feisty player. Looks like he'd make an ideal slot guy if he can get used to sight adjustments on his routes. Nice mid round player who will probably out produce his draft spot.

@BaconGrundleCandy has mentioned him several times, so I certainly can't take any credit, but I'd like to see Moore here if he can adapt to our offense. Reminds me a little bit of Golden Tate with his stocky build, toughness, and run after the catch ability.

Hate this QB class, give me Hoyer for another year and wait

Idk about that. I think it's a strong class but we will see in a couple of years. Idk if you can wait. Personally I would try and go after bridgewater if he's healthy with his knees. Can he stay healthy and get stronger.

It's not as strong receiver class but who are your top 5 wrs in this draft? Could lasley from ucla declare?

He declared, yes. I'm always a little concerned when players are suspended multiple weeks by the coaching staff, though. Maybe it's just a growing pain, and he's all set -- or maybe it's a sign that he doesn't have the maturity to handle the strict coaching in NE. Hard to say without knowing him as a person.

I'm still pretty firmly on the Auden Tate bandwagon. He's more than just a big body. His subtle movements and body control are really impressive, and he shows all the traits to become a #1 guy at the next level.

As I mentioned earlier, I'm skipping guys like Calvin Ridley and Christian Kirk, because I expect them to be gone before we draft. There's a chance that Sutton and St Brown are also gone in the 1st round. I'll probably adjust these rankings after I finish all my film review (for example, I still haven't finished Parris Campbell or Riche James, and they're both super intriguing), but right now my top ten looks something like this:
  1. Auden Tate
  2. Javon Wims
  3. Anthony Miller
  4. Stanley Morgan Jr (watch his game against Josh Jackson)
  5. Cam Philips
  6. Braxton Berrios
  7. DJ Moore
  8. Simmie Cobbs Jr
  9. Dante Pettis
  10. Emmanuel Butler

I'll have Tate as my #1 WR barring something big happening (crazy combine from someone already in my top 3, injuries, o.t.f. etc)

We're on the same page here. Been a fan for about 2 years.

I also think he has some "subtle" wiggle & shake in route & w/ the ball in his hands.

He's so young & gifted.

I need some draft talk. That other stuff in the main forum is a disaster

Just started watching prospects (still early looks (1 or 2 game films)

1. Luke Falk - Like him a fair bit. Good Pats fit.

2. Rashaan Evans - Can see why Reamer and Evans like him so much. I think he’s a good Pats fit but I don’t love him as much as they do although still very early. I think I liked Jarrad Davis more. That might change as Evans has some excellent traits.

3. Tremaine Edmunds - Two games in And ugh. Too slow to be a significant starter and doesn’t impact the game enough. Thought he might be a Zach Cunningham who, despite his flaws, I thought was an influential LB. Edmunds is not that good.

4. Marcus Davenport - Intriguing. Looks raw but the athleticism and power is definitely there. Would like to see him as a linebacker for the Pats rather than a DE.

As for needs, I’d take LB, QB and either a pass rush capable linebacker, strong safety or DE with the other pick.

I did not like what I saw from falk this year. He would be more of a project/development guy so I guess its not too big of a deal. The other 3 I have not seen enough of yet to make judgements. I like another Ohio State linemen though as I did last year. This kid Price is going to be gooooood.

The 2 ND kids will be good. Especially Nelson. Not sure if he will ever be All Pro, Bu the will be good.

Mo hurst... STUD. If you Havent seen him. PLEASE WATCH LOL

My two favorites in this draft are Barkley and Derwin James. Those 2 are going to be great.

James, Fitzpatrick, and Barkley To me are the best non QB talents in this draft. All 3 worth of
a top spot

Last year it was Adams vs hooker at safety
This year James vs Fitzpatrick. I like James better

Not a fan of Falk. Fell off the bandwagon in the middle of the year.

Davenport has been a binky for a while now. Profiled him in my rush thread. He's a baby growing into his body that does community work. Standing up/hand in dirt. Power, ability to get flat, hands. Athletic background.

Will do but DT is probably the position I’m worst at scouting. As for Falk, I’m only judging him from YouTube cut ups which doesn’t really give you an insight into situational aspects of his play. The things that impress me the most though are his pocket presence and the fact that he doesn’t get flustered, both are aspects that fit with the Pats and aren’t really coach able. I think the rest of the stuff could be coached into him. I hope he takes part in the Senior Bowl.
