Central Thread For Mourning/Canonizing Jimmy Garoppolo

SF for one. And they should have moved him sooner.

But if you think JG is all-world, you would want to keep him until you can determine if your 40 y/o GOAT is healthy and can still play. That happens during the season, not at the draft.

So you got a half season of JG as backup QB, instead of another pick. That had real value if TB had gotten hurt in week one.

No, 15+ years into his career it would've been smarter to roll the dice on Brady still being pretty good a couple of months into this season. They could and should have gotten more.

Yet BB and Ernie and Nick and the rest of the brain trust felt it was worth more than an extra pick or a bump into the 1st round to keep him around till the trade deadline.

I'm not sure why so many have so much invested in thinking that the brain trust made a mistake.

Maybe they should consider becoming 49ers fans and let the rest of us enjoy the rest of the Brady run in peace.

Relax. And yes, the "brain trust" can make a mistake.

That second rounder's not looking too good at the moment. I was hoping they picked up a good qb with that early pick.

Right now, it's #8, thanks to JG.
Maybe Belichick will try to move up by trading Guerrero with the Pick.

the problem is jimmy G had limited playing time here in NE so teams did not want to pony up for him.

He has played well. They gave him away for peanuts.
I’ll ask you the same question I asked nunchucks (which no one answered): when, in the salary cap era, has any team gotten *more* for a player with 8 weeks left on a contract?

No, they could and should have gotten more. Life goes on.

They got what they could get for a guy with limited experience and a pending FA. If JG wasn’t a pending FA then yes they could and would have probably gotten more. I do not believe for a second there was ever a first round offer out there last April. If there was the Pats would have jumped on it.

They bet on a Brady decline by drafting him... it didn’t happen, time to move on and find the heir to Brady.

If there is one thing we do know about the Garoppolo trade is that we don't know who made the decision or how it was made.

So, saying "Yet BB and Ernie and Nick and the rest of the brain trust felt..." is to express an opinion, which, while it is as valid as any other opinion floating around, can't claim to represent what actually happened, since none of us know what actually happened.

My opinion, no more valid than yours, is that the only people who know how and why this was decided are Robert Kraft, Jonathan Kraft and Bill Belichick.

However, we do agree that it is way too early to know whether this was a good decision or a bad decision. We simply don't have the evidence to come to the conclusion that this was or was not "a mistake."

I think it’s great that Garoppolo went 21/30 with 2 touchdowns and 1 interception and this thread is enamored with him. Brady went 21/28 with 2 touchdowns and 1 interception and there is a thread debating what is wrong with him.

I think we should see what player or players we end up getting out of that pick before we determine if we should have got more back or not.

I do too. Helped us. Now I hope he loses his last game and helps us again.

That’s easy to say with 20/20 hindsight. But suppose Brady got injured and missed 4 weeks in October. You’d be the first one in here saying “why did they trade Garoppolo so early??!? They should have waited until the deadline!!!”

They got what they could

They should have gotten more for him.

No, I wouldn't. Part of the intrigue of the off-season was the oddness of the fact that they didn't move him at that time. It was a mistake.

More is better than less because if there's more less stuff, then you might want to have some more. However, your parents won't let you because there's only a little.....We want more, we want more....like you really like it you want more.

Yes they can but this isn’t one of them.

If you consider McCaron was going to be traded for a second and a third and all the other trades for starting QBs and what the market for them is, yes we didn't get market value.

But i also understand people can't come to grips with criticizing this team because of all the success they've had so i take it with a grain of salt when people put their head in the sand.

might have been covered already, but I think Jimmy G is undefeated as a Starter in the NFL?

2-0 as a Patriot
4-0 as a 49er

Glad he's having so much success, it will be painful to watch if he becomes a truly elite top 5 QB in this league for the next 15 years.. Brady still gives us the best chance for the next 2-3 years, so hopefully we can find a successor in that time frame
