Ideally, we could get WR Riley McCarron up to speed quickly. He would be exactly what the offense is missing without our beloved squirrel. Assuming he could get in sync with Brady. It would allow Brady to get rid of the ball quicky again.
I love his skill set.

And yet, we have Bademosi, Richards and Ebner as our #4-#7 defensive backs, and
one is worth activating.

These players may be potential future players, but the defensive backs are clearly not active roster ready. And this isn't for a lack of trying. Belichick has had a lot of defensive backs on the Practice Squad roster.

BOTTOM LINE
We usually have 8-9 defensive backs active for a game, including STO players. This week, we don't even have a Practice Squad player capable of being number #8 defensive back, never mind having one better than Ebner as a defensive back.

Well, I didn't intend for "potentially" to apply to all of those players as "immediately ready".

Also, who gets released/waived in order to promote a Lewis or a Travis for one game as a depth guy?

I don't know. I'm sure that Belichick has several players that are ready to be cut if a roster spot is needed because of injury.

The fact that we have no one good enough is not an issue, but only because we won the game. The defense gave up over 300 yards to one of the worst teams in football.

First of all, thank you for dragging me out of the scrum of the Post-game Thread.

Secondly, I'm not so sure that BB has anyone who HE thought could reasonably be cut for this game.

He also may have thought that it wasn't necessary. Given who appeared to be responsible for the blown coverages today, I'm not sure that bringing another guy up from the PS would've made a positive difference, ready or not.

The defense actually gave up over 400 yards to a (surprisingly) 3-2 Jets team led by the first QB they've had in years who isn't a complete eff-up. McCown made some Brady-level completions into very good coverage today.

Anyway, I'm not willing to concede that the DBs on the PS aren't "good enough" for an emergency reserve spot on the AR simply because BB chose not to call one up for this particular game at the last minute.

harris?

More important was the fact that Belichick was OK to start Bademosi. We then had Jones as a backup at corner, in addition to him being available in the slot (along with Harmon). With Bademosi as a starting CB, we had 7 players (including Richards) able to perform all the normal defensive sets. Of course, their efficiency is still nowhere good enough.

Harris? I honestly don't have a clue what BB's plan is there or what might be constraining BB from cutting him.

I was sort of surprised that Richards got snaps and sort of not.

I figured that Bademosi would be okay, but he was apparently better than even I expected. Defeinitely a helluva tackler.

I'll be curious to see what the pressure and coverage stats were for this game when Howe tweets them. It seems to me that McCown was mostly picking on Butler, McCourty, Chung and any LB who happened to be in coverage, rather than Bademosi and Jon Jones. Even on Kerley's 30-yard catch at the 1-yd line that set up the Jets' first score, it's difficult to criticize Jones' coverage. It was an amazing throw by McCown (with a Pats defender hanging on to his back leg) and an equally amazing catch by Kerley, since Jones had a hand on it.

Anyway, perhaps it's not so much that none of Wiltz, Lewis, Jones and Travis on the PS are "good enough", but that we're underestimating how good the backup DBs on the Pats' AR actually are?

FWIW ...

OG/OT Cole Toner, placed on "Practice Squad IR" on 10/12, was waived by the Pats with an injury settlement Mon. 10/16.

Former Pat RB, LeShun Daniels, who was signed to the LA Chargers PS on 10/4, was waived by the LAC Mon. 10/16.

If his nickname is "The Chipmunk" I'm all in on this move.

Damn are they talking about that new rule again where the team with the most yards win?

Agreed.

We just didn't know that Bademosi was considered capable of being a starter. One of my points was that we didn't have a backup corner for the jets game, nor much secondary help if the team wanted lots of defensive backs on the field. With Bademosi as a potential starter, we really do have a fine set of corners and safeties.

Belichick had the entire offseason to choose a #4 safety who would be a special teamer. Belichick chose Richards. The team uses 3 safeties lots, so the 4th safety figures to get reps, especially when there are only 3 corner active.

Obviously, we need some health from Gilmore and Rowe, but this week has to be good news. Bademosi and Jones had serious reps, important experience, as did Richards. Patricia and the staff now understands better what they are capable of.

Anyway, perhaps it's not so much that none of Wiltz, Lewis, Jones and Travis on the PS are "good enough", but that we're underestimating how good the backup DBs on the Pats' AR actually are?

OP updated with tryouts for 10/16, two of whom have already signed elsewhere:
QB Garrett Grayson > ATL-ps
WR Deonte Thompson > BUF AR

Also, DE Datone Jones, who tried out with the Pats 18-Sep, was signed to the DET AR on 10/10 and released again yesterday, 10/18.

Shea McClellin added at bottom of PS list.

RB LeShun Daniels, signed to Chargers PS on 10/4 was waived 10/16.
LB/ST Jonathan Freeny, signed to BAL AR 9/27 was waived 10/17.
Both are now SFA.

Just speculation but with CB depth continuing to be an issue and Langi reportedly out for the year after the car crash I wouldnt be surprised if he goes to IR and we see one of the PS DBs called up just for depth purposes.

With Bademosi "questionable" due to an abdominal issue that came up yesterday, Reiss was speculating about Wiltz versus Lewis.

Lewis is apparently highly valued by the Pats and other teams have already tried to poach him, so if he was promoted, it might need to be more or less permanent since he probably wouldn't clear waivers back to the PS. Going forward, such a move could lead to a problem making room for McClellin's return.

OTOH, Wiltz could be brought up for the weekend and be more likely to clear waivers back to the PS next week.

Then, too, either Jones or Travis could be promoted to backup/fill in at safety and on ST and allow McCourty to play CB.
