The mediots know that the Pats won a SB without Jones & Collins, right?

I keep seeing Chandler Jones and Jamie Collins names pop up from mediots and it really is head scratching. Yes I get that the defense could use these 2 with the way its been playing but the narrative that Bill letting those 2 go is part of the reason for this is simply laughable given that it ignores they just WON A SB WITHOUT EITHER OF THEM

Saying Bill should have try harder to keep Long, Sheard and Ryan and convince Ninkovich to not retire would be a better argument than Collins and Jones.

I don't think talking a player out of retirement is wise.
I think by December the consensus will be wise and marsh (plus some reps by guy) will be giving us as much at DE opposite Flowers as last years 3 did and Gilmore will be playing better than Ryan.

Why blame the mediots only ? This board reaction in certain cases is like we are a 0-4 team which hasnt won a superbowl in 15 yrs and stuck with marvin lewis.
To be fair they are backing it up with bills fans message board comments

We won without them because we had the depth behind them. Now we don't, so their absence is missed. What's hard to understand about that? Oh right "BLARGH THE MEDIA AM I RIGHT GUYS?"

Depth's an issue right now. Pass defense has been brutal along with the run defense which gets lost. Now they face another QB who could run a little. It's time for this defense to start performing on the field.

Pass rush is fine. Top 5 in NFL. Hightower being out 3 of 4 games hurt the run defense.
Secondary obviously worst problem. It should get better.
My only concern is depth behind Hightower. There's none.

Pats rank 4th in the NFL in 4-man QB pressures according to PFF. QB pressures is not the real problem.

I had kind of forgotten about Collins. He's missed the last 2 games with a concussion and had 9 tackles, 2 assists and 1 forced fumble in the first 2 games of the year.

If he was here, with the contract he signed in Cleveland, I'm sure there would be a calm and reasoned reaction to these developments.

Still better than Gilmore.

When the patriots got rid of jones and Collins they played better on defense so it seems they were neither the cause of the improvement or a later decline.

Are we surprised?! They're just waitin for an excuse to slam Pats until of course they right their ship then everyone is all over their jocks again. As for Chandler and Collins they questioned BB for those moves and when Pats won it all last year BB was a Genius, now, again, needing a narative to headline it's BB blew it trading them away. If it wasn't for Pats, mediots* columnist haters* would have nothin to talk about and be out of job I use word job loosely.

The Falcons abused the Pats for almost 3 quarters until shrinkage kicked in. Sure...the trophy is all that matters...but.....glaring issues were on display that game and the current roster is significantly thinner. A quality QB carved them up then and that pattern has continued.

I hope you are right.

Tackling is a problem.

Would love to have Jones at defensive end instead of Wise/Marsh if the money was the same but that is obviously not the case. Success has a price and the cap is unforgiving. The Gilmore contract and his play at the moment is a major concern but if he gets to where expected and the new pieces learn to play together everything should be fine.

While we're not 0-4, I think we all agree that this development is completely shocking. So while I haven't jumped off the bandwagon I can at least see why there is plenty of reason for discussion.

After all, a team that potentially had the talent to go 16-0 is stumbling out of the gate. It's not just that they're playing 0.500 but that one side of the ball (obviously the defense) has looked like absolutely garbage in the process. One game? nothing to worry about........three out of four games? I'd say it's a problem worth discussing.

I'd rather have two all pros then not. I think losing Ryan and Long have been major blows too.

Nonetheless, this season is similar to life in general: Sometimes you take steps to be successful. You do everything possible. Yet somehow it doesn't work out the way you anticipated. Maybe missing the playoffs would really make us fans appreciate more what they've been able to do for fifteen years.

Because it's a stupid Hawt take that should have expired last February.

They fail to mention the returns. 2nd round pick = Malcom Mitchell and Thuney.

They also fail to mention that they signed Chris Long.

They also fail to mention that the combination of Mitchell, Thuney and Long were all signed for approximately 2 million less than what they were paying for Jones.

That was a great trade.
