Official Post Game Thread - Chiefs at Patriots

I think at least part of it is that we have a lot of guys who we're suddenly relying on to play starter-type roles who in past years would be rotational guys at best. Phillip Dorsett is suddenly our WR3. Marsh is likely to be our starting MLB next week. Some combination of Guy, Wise, Grissom and Butler are being counted on to be our DE2-DE4 when last year none of them would have cracked the rotation at all. We're paper-thin at a handful of very important positions, and we have guys who this team needs to step up in a way we didn't really need guys of similar talent to step up last year. I think that creates a level of urgency that Brady's trying to amplify. These guys need to become starter-caliber players and it needs to happen quickly.

Butler and Wise played about 20 percent of the snaps and both caused some havoc while they were in there. They need to be bumped up to around 40-50 percent going forward.

Yes, this sounds like a McDaniels/Brady offense... the first read MUST be the person most likely to be in double coverage the majority of time. Genius..

Listen, I've become well aware that you're not too up on the whole football thing, but offense, and particularly the Erhardt-Perkins, relies on timing. Brady was working in Cooks, Allen, and Gronk returning from a knee injury. The timing was off. That's readily apparent to anyone who knows what they are looking at.

I also think plays like this are where we missed Malcolm Mitchell last night. We're a bit small at WR right now, and Mitchell plays bigger than his size with his enormous hands. It's not the end of the world, that's an issue that we've dealt with and more than overcome in the past. Plus most teams don't have a Marcus Peters that they can use to remove Chris Hogan from the game, and in the future I think we'll do a better job integrating Allen.

I don't think it's a coincidence that I'm pretty sure every one of those passes was overthrown. Brady errs on the side of ball security, always has. When you're going against ballhawks like Berry and Peters, you don't **** around and throw interceptable balls. Brady would clearly rather miss long than throw a ball that they could make a play on. Especially when you're playing half of the game with exactly two WRs who have been around for more than a week.

That's not to say he had a good game. He missed some passes that he has to make. Missed a wide open Allen badly on the first play from scrimmage, and missed a third down pass later in the game that pretty much singlehandedly took three points off the board. It clearly wasn't a good game for him, but that number is misleading.

Uh... yeah. That's not to say they were all timing. Brady's human after all. But passes can easily be considered "off target" if the receiver is not in the same place you expect him to be. The two passes to Burkhead could be considered off target but those two, for example, were PURELY related to timing.

Solder should've had Mitchell blocked earlier during that run.
If Mitchell is blocked, then he doesn't make the tackle; if he doesn't make the tackle, then White makes a 1st down; if he makes a 1st down, then Gillislee doesn't get stuffed on 4th down the very next play; if he doesn't get stuffed, then the Pats have as many as 4 more opportunities to score a TD; if they score a TD, then it's a differently-coached ballgame.

I won't stretch it that far out but I saw that as well. I will say that Mitchell was kind of behind another defender so Solder may have seen him too late.

Like him, you go through it, and refute each statement. Right now, are there holes everywhere? Yes. Did they give up like you haven't seen from a GOOD Pats team ever? Yes. Is Butler stuffling and has been struggling all preseason? Yes.

Will they go 8-8. No. That was a statement based upon if the team stays the way it is. Then I heard the comments from Brady about attitudes.

Not 8-8 but 10-6 seems like it's more in play than I thought earlier. NO will be the big tell. Play like this again, watch out. Smoke the Saints? Back to square one.

I'll refute it in 7 games when it's clear they aren't junked and cooked but I'm really not much for 'i told you so' as it's one of the lowest forms of expression so I guess I'll just let their record refute it for me?

I was going to say something about Allen at some point. He is a great blocking TE as advertised. But he also has a lot of hustle in him. I don't know how that will translate in the passing game but he looked good in the first half.

Oh I don't disagree that he had some deliberate overthrows. That one to Burkhead at the pylons was a great pass and he erred on the throwing it away from the LBer. He overthrew a wide open Hogan by about 10 yards. I want to see the real TB next weekend.

I was going to say something about Allen at some point. He is a great blocking TE as advertised. But he also has a lot of hustle in him. I don't know how that will translate in the passing game but he looked good in the first half.

I kept posting about it in the game thread so it's kind of a broken record at this point, but I was really intrigued by how we were using him around the goal line. On almost every snap they were motioning him all over the place and playing off of that. It didn't translate to much in the passing game, but I assume there's a matchup there that they're looking for, and I expect we'll see him catch some touchdowns in the coming weeks.

With Edelman gone, we need someone to get open quickly in the end zone and help create some easy TDs, and I think Gronk and Allen may end up being those guys.

Richards played horrible and why the hell was he playing as a LB on some plays? Malcolm Butler is either having a bad spell or has hit his ceiling. He is not playing well and with him being in his final season and Rowe getting better, i wouldnt be surprised if butler is traded.

He's a great guy but Richards is just too slow.

The idea of him covering anyone makes me cringe and it was demonstrated by how late he was getting into the flat on that TD he gave up in the red zone.

I kept posting about it in the game thread so it's kind of a broken record at this point, but I was really intrigued by how we were using him around the goal line. On almost every snap they were motioning him all over the place and playing off of that. It didn't translate to much in the passing game, but I assume there's a matchup there that they're looking for, and I expect we'll see him catch some touchdowns in the coming weeks.

Based upon his blocking last night he isn't one that requires an attitude adjustment. Neither does McCourty. He played his butt off and never gave up.
