2017 Training Camp - Day 10 (8/7/17) [Joint Practice with the Jaguars]

Visiting family in MA and took in the practice today. It was tough to garner much from my vantage point, but the obvious takeaway was how Cooks is mini-Moss: He can get behind any secondary even when they see it coming.

And what a huge crowd!

Regards,
Chris

546 total yards
43 completed passes
34 points
37 1st downs (and 7/14 conversions)
29 first downs made on 1st or second down.

There has never been a game in the history of the NFL that a defense would say they would feel they controlled the other teams offense with that production.
EXACTLY! We actually hurt ourselves more than they "contained us." If those stats reflect a bad day on offense, then sign me up ANY DAY.

DEN and ATL matched up AND contained the 2016 offense for most of their respective games with NE

Now add Gronk, Gillislee, Burkhead, 100% DLew and Cooks to that equation.

So just match up or and including contain?

I guess what I meant by "match up" is that they have the best personnel in the league to try to "match up" against NE. I'm not saying they'll be successful against us though.

Denver and NYG have defenses that can match up with our offense.

Denver has no offense. They're not scoring more than 10 points on this defense. That's enough of a reason to feel confident about that match up.

As far as Denver's defense, keep in mind that they had virtually the same personnel in 2014 (when NE put up 40+ points on them) that they did in 2015. The only difference in 2015 was Wade Phillips and NE's injury depleted offense. Wade is gone, and NE has added several weapons over the offseason. If the offense is healthy, they put up 30+ points on Denver.

/Lucien/ Hopefully PS = all top 5 healthy . clears waivers
starting to give some comfort in case of inj though..

If Lucien continues on this trajectory they will need to hide him in preseason games otherwise come September he will be a Jet. I said it before, we are too stacked at WR to carry Carr or him on the 53 unless they can contribute on 2+ ST units (or someone gets injured).

They contained the offense for almost 3/4s of the game. Atlanta only held the ball for 23:27. If Atlanta's offense is able to sustain drives then there isn't time for the Patriots to make the comeback, and Atlanta's defense would be more rested.

And we contained their offense good enough. Why does exactly your logic only work for Atlanta but not for our team ?

I have to laugh at some of the people who were vocally against the cooks trade. I always thought it was obvious he would be a superstar in New England

You are being pretty dishonest here. Nobody sane doubted Cooks skill at any point. What some people had an issue with is trading a first round pick for 2 years of a player at cost control. And there is an interesting argument in this which is definitely worth discussing.

We should start a pool with just how many Pats cuts will wind up on OTHER teams' 53 man rosters after the September cuts.

My pick is 3

Pretty conservative number there PFK. It was 4 only among rookies last yr.:
LeBlanc (CHI), KGH (PHI), Scheu (DEN), B Williams (LAR/CAR).

And loads of other cuts sticking on other rosters: Cooper (DAL), Kline (TEN), D.Roberts (NYJ), A. Johnson (NYJ), Harper (SF,NYJ), Harbor (DET), Keshawn Martin (DET), Halapio (NYG), Snyder (DEN), Humber (BUF), Rufus (WAS,OAK), Vellano (ATL), Sunseri (SF), Cedrick Thompson (MIN,CIN), Dobson (DET/ARI), now Gaffney (JAX), even concussioned Stork got a look from WAS etc.

With this group . 3 might be the number of guys not finding other jobs. Im preparing for painful days since March..

What for yards? Who cares about yards.

Having only surrendered 3 points near the end of the 3rd qtr and 20 up until :57 remaining in the game is the definition of containment.
Not when the game is 60 minutes

Of course but we are talking about containment....
If they contained the offense they would have been able to protect a 28-3 lead.
If you want to that a terrible day for he patriots offense and that was the example of containing them I guess we are putting up 700 points this year.

I wouldn't be surprised if Slater starts the season on PUP (edit- Can't, dummy), maybe even IR'ed, since I think we can bring 2 players back from IR this year. Lucien will be on the roster, too, if he keeps this up. Cooks is here for only 2 years, Dola is in his last year of his contract, so it wouldn't hurt to bring in some new blood, to go along with Mitchell

I don't think I'm overstating this but on a team that was particularly stacked going into TC, this year's crop of UDFA's could be one of the best they ever had. AButler, Moore, Carr, Hollister, etc have all caught people's eye during camp. Plus impressive 2nd year UDFA's like Lucien and Foster. The shame of it is that so many will have to be let go. The shark will be circling the Pats when cuts are finally made

Don't forget about Langi! Guy was with the starting unit this practice. Is showing off skills in coverage and pass-rushing

To anyone was there. Were there any jaguars fans in attendance?

Gotcha.

I do agree with your statement.

Not when the game is 60 minutes

By your definition the 01 Pats did not contain the 01 Rams as the Lambs scored 14 4th qtr points in 8 minutes

The only three guys currently on Pats roster that can start the season on PUP are Branch, High and Jelks. The good news is that from this yr two guys can return from IR.

Very interesting thing to monitor at cut time will be how they play the look on 2018.
They were reportedly very disappointed to lose KGH, LeBlanc and D.Roberts last year. Losing all Foster, Lucien and Carr would certainly hurt WR position after this season.
