Back to roster building business:

These were today's lineups (and more or less all 3 days) . from Bedard

  • Defensive line rotation, from left to right:
1: Grissom - Guy - Brown - Flowers
2: Rivers - *Kilgo/Hamilton - Valentine - Ealy
3: Wise -Butler - Augusta - Kidder
.

  • Offensive line:
1: Solder - Thuney - Andrews - Mason - Cannon
2: Fleming - Croston - Karras - Douglas - Waddle
3: Garcia - Ferentz - King - Rich - McDermott
____

* in the clips posted here there is mostly Hamilton beside VV
some reporters were high on Kilgo today though..
____

BTW - whatever some may think of him . Bedard has best TC reports
i recommend it: Practice report 07.29.17

If he can contribute in multiple ST units this changes the equation in terms of space for him on the roster. Didn't read anything so far that he actually has any ST value. Curious.

I don't know if Carr played on special teams or not during his time at Northwestern. I can tell you that he had 2 solo and 2 assisted tackles during his career. I don't see anything mentioned about returning punts or kicks. But then. Julian Edelman had never returned a punt before he joined the Pats.

Only time will tell.

Hmm.. King was taking snaps at center? Intriguing. He played guard exclusively at Purdue though I guess he could have practiced at center as well..

And for all the JJ fans . it was a big nickel day

  • Patriots didn’t use much regular nickel today. Mostly big nickel, with a safety for a linebacker. So we didn’t get a good look at who might have the edge at third corner. Jonathan Jones has been there so far, but Eric Rowe has been charging hard.
from Bedard as well
____

they are both locks in my book (barring injury or immoral offer of course)

even Rich had some snaps at 3 string C as posted earlier
Ferentz indeed seemed like LG on some videos posted
i think it was vice versa yesterday
Karras and Douglas exchange positions at times as well
very reasonable for backup IOLs

Anyone else feel like Jimmy is slipping already? Pats homers don't want to hear it, but Brissett is going to be the guy soon. Jimmy will be finished in two years. Still betting on Brady and Jimmy to Cleveland and Brissett starts opening night.

Your crazy, Edelman will be our starting QB opening night, and all 3 of those jags will be traded

OK, I'm calling it pointlessly early:

Barring injury, the interior OL roster is set at Andrews, Douglas, Karras, Mason and Thuney.

I have no idea what kind of player Rivers is going to ultimately be this year or next, but that shot of him in that drill reminded me of a post draft clip someone found that had a draft nerd breaking down his game against a D1 foe.

It reminded me of what I was most impressed with in about all the stuff we saw from his college days. He plays with a great pad level. The shot you posted showed the same thing. His arms extended, and his head below that of the blocker.

Clearly he is very raw and lacks experience against top flight talent. That being said...you can add strength, learn techniques, gain experience, all over time. BUT when a kid this tall seems to natually play with great pad level, as a coach, you have solved one of the bigger issues players on the DL need to learn before they can succeed.

It is going to take a while and I hope we understand the need to be patient with him; but I think we are going to really like the end product.

JJ, Flowers, Foster and Rivers, all binkys. Not that often you get that many on your favorite team. Big Rowe fan as well.

This secondary is just fantastic. Rowe and JJ are gunna be so key in terms of match ups during the year.

Butler, Gilmore, Rowe, JJ, DMC, Chung, Harmon is pretty sweet

Hey, give Slipping Jimmy a break. You never know when he may end up taking on a new identity.

Observational leftovers:

O

-- Edelman made a great snag of a sharp Brady pass that was just over the top of great coverage from LB Kyle Van Noy.

-- Mike Gillislee took the type of hit you could hear on another field, but didn’t flinch and scored a goal-line touchdown.

-- --As he did without pads, Gillislee once again showed the ability to catch the ball. So far it looks like the only running back who isn’t overly comfortable catching the ball is undrafted Iowa rookie LeShun Daniels, the biggest back in the group.

-- Kony Ealy was in full pads and did a bit more work in his second practice of the summer. Unfortunately that included one really tough 1-on-1 pass rush rep in which James O’Shaughnessy essentially pancaked the pass rusher to the ground. O’Shaughnessy is one of the sleeper positive performers early in camp. The trade addition has shown soft hands and impressive route running early on and looks ready to be more than just a special teams contributor as a possible third tight end.

--During some 1-on-1 work James White toasted Devin McCourty for an easy catch on an in-cut. Shortly thereafter O’Shaughnessy did the same to Duron Harmon.

-- Ted Karras: Was outstanding in one-on-ones and team drills. Right now he’s playing backup center to David Andrews, but if Karras keeps this up, don’t think it’s out of the question that he could make center a competitive position. He’s a lot bigger than Andrews, and that may be worth looking at for the coaches.
Karras put Ealy on the ground during a pass play. But Ealy recovered to team with Van Noy to stop Rex Burkhead on the goal line.

-- Andrews had a tough time with the bull rushes from Valentine, and then Brown.

-- Shaq Mason stood out for his technique in team drills. He seems to have made some improvements in the offseason.

-- OT Cam Fleming: Did not show well in one-on-ones. He was beaten by speed and power.

--The group of linemen working on center-exchanges with the quarterbacks in pre-practice work included David Andrews, Joe Thuney, Ted Karras, Cole Croston, James Ferentz, Jamil Douglas and Jason King.

D

-- David Harris delivered some thunderous hits on Saturday. The 11-year veteran looks like he wants to prove he still has a lot left in the tank. He is taking many of the first-team reps alongside Kyle Van Noy

-- David Harris, Shea McClellin, and Kyle Van Noy were the team's linebackers in its base 4-3 defense on Saturday.

-- DE Kony Ealy: Was admonished by coaches for doing the wrong thing on one play, and was beaten twice by Marcus Cannon in one-on-ones.

-- Wise had a great inside move to pressure the QB in red-zone work.

-- Gilmore and Butler are set as the top two cornerbacks, and Jonathan Jones looks like he’s getting first crack at winning the slot cornerback position. Eric Rowe has looked good so far, but he’s a bit big for the slot at 6 feet 1 inch and 205 pounds and might be better suited as a depth piece on the outside.

-- Kenny Moore continues to stand out: The UDFA CB out of a Division II school continues to make plays on the field. Garoppolo tried to hit a pass down the middle that was tipped and intercepted by Moore. Moore isn’t very big at 5’9” 179 and will likely have to win a job as a special teamer and slot corner, but if he continues to make plays, he may find himself on a roster.

-- Jordan Richards matched up on UDFA TE Jacob Hollister, he perfectly read an out route and made the Catch of the Day with a toe-dragging interception along the sideline. Richards was the first player to intercept Tom Brady in camp.

-- The Patriots seem intent on getting Cyrus Jones as many punt return reps as possible. In addition to normal punt unit drills, Jones spends time toward the end of each practice catching punts from Ryan Allen.

ST

--During punt work Matthew Slater and Coleman took the first reps at gunner. Nate Ebner as the personal protector. Rex Burkhead also took reps in front of Allen.
____

-- Both Derek Rivers and Deatrich Wise Jr., the team’s defensive end draft picks, had to do laps during the 1-on-1 pass rush drills. Wise Jr. did another lap later, and both times the rookie practically sprinted, easily the fastest penalty lap in recent memory.

-- Flowers and Ealy did extra work with large blocking dummies together after practice.

Good luck covering Edleman, Gronk and Cooks with a RB that can catch ... And if Gillislee can provide that and the threat that type of back brings, this offense will taken to another level.
I love our stable and really hope we prioritize all the talent in the big picture.
We play a lot of teams that give big #'s to that position. Overall TD's to the RB position. NO 21 TD's, Atlanta 16, Pitt 18, Buffalo 18, TB 14, Oak 16, SD 19.

I have a strong feeling Mason will be a top tier G by seasons end.

Never any doubt in my mind Gill can provide plenty. One important aspect not talked about much is that he is also excellent pass protector by all accounts. That might be the biggest difference vs Blount - and one of the main reasons they let LGB go - since he unfortunately never really got comfortable and always struggled at PP.

(at the time i couldn't understand why is that so hard for him to grasp . such an important part of lead back . but then I saw many big back prospects of this draft struggling there as well. Freeman wants big money but his PP in SBLI showed its not all about speed, fancy cuts or even TDs)
___

EDIT: And why you wouldn't place at least 2nd round tender on a guy like this that was productive for you . knowing that you need a serious back up having injury-prone big-risk style of playing guy at #1RB - even for a Buffalo - that's beyond me..

If they do carry 5 IOLs this year that's the 5 i see at the moment as well.
King and Croston are making their presence felt . but PS should be thier first stop . Id guess they can clear waivers

Douglas is one of the guys im most eager to see in first preseason game . however odd that might sound..

Took my son to training camp on Saturday and then to the induction ceremony for Raymond Clayborn. Visited the Pro Shop. He asked who my favorite player was... had to think about it and beyond the obvious (Brady)... I realized that it was Trey Flowers. They didn't have any Flowers jerseys, so he got Edelman.

Boy... Edelman had two dropped passes and a muffed punt. Gronk couldn't win a one-on-one battle for a TD. The kicker was just standing by himself kicking with just a leg swing. Oh well, maybe next year. /end_sarcasm

I think it is too early to tell what we have, but I expect it to be very good. It was awesome seeing 3 Hall Of Famers (Hannah, Haynes, Tippett) and all the greats from the 70's and 80's turn out for Clayborn who was a personal favorite of mine. (Nellie, Grogan, Cunningham, Morgan). Really liked when he signed a contract so that he could retire as a Patriot too.

Me too....

Brisett is still 2 or 3 years from being ready and fairly judged, so we need to wait. But so far he looks like a future backup and not a starter.
