The 2017 Mock Draft Thread

Maye is my top player of my favourite position in this draft (not counting Adams&Hooker) so this is very nice to see. And while I still don't have a great feeling about Butler staying (doesn't seem natural to keep two #1 CBs) - although Id love to keep him - I wouldn't give up Butler for just Maye..

Because, by focusing on only 50-75 guys, they are short-changing themselves (and us) whenever a player superior to one of "their guys" falls to them, but they still end up bypassing him in order to take the inferior player, who in almost every single case (despite Patchick's mumbo-jumbo) fails to live up to their draft status.

Seven round mock from Chad Reuter.

Chad Reuter 2017 seven-round NFL mock draft: Round 7

Has us taking:

72. Jourdan Lewis
96. Harvey Langi
131. Samson Ebukam
163. James Conner
183. Delano Hill
200. Brad Seaton
239. Tanner Gentry

As I have Langi, Ebukam and Hill in the prediction thread, needless to say, I'd be very happy with this mock.

I also want to credit Reuter with clearly giving this mock some thought. He clearly pays attention to who we've met with (even Tanner Gentry) and also having Conner at 163, the pick we'd give up for Gillislee. Swap in a pass rusher instead of Lewis and this is a very possible mock.
That is a terrible mock. Absolutely terrible.

At 72, I would choose either OLB/DEs Tim Williams, Tyus Bowser or Derek Rivers,
or OLmen Ethan Pocic or Roderick Johnson.

At 96, I would choose either LB Ryan Anderson, or DEs Daeshon Hall or Trey Hendrickson.

At 131, I would choose either CB Rasul Douglas, C/G Pat Elflein, or TEs Jeremy Sprinkle or Jonnu Smith.

At 183, I would choose DE Keionta Davis. This is also where I would start considering those players whom Reuter has designated as UDFAs, including CBs Channing Stribling, Jack Tocho, Jeremy Clark, William Likely and especially Howard Wilson; LBs Ben Gedeon, Blair Brown, Jalen Reeves Maybin, Marquel Lee and especially Jordan Evans; Safeties Damarius Travis, Leon McQuay, Jordan Sterns and especially Joshua Harvey Clemons; DTs Davon Godchaux & Treyvon Hester; DEs Brian Cox, Garrett Sickels & Ifeadi Odenigbo; TEs Cole Hikutini & Blake Jarwin; and OLmen Chad Wheeler, Corey Levin, Colin Buchanan, Erik Magnuson, JJ Dielman, Jessamen Dunker, Jordan Morgan, Kyle Fuller, and especially Kofi Amichia & Max Rich.

At 200, OT Brad Seaton is OK I suppose, though I would probably choose LT Max Rich or OT Will Holden if I wanted an OLman there. Cover LBs James Onwualu or Dylan Cole are other possibilities.

At 239, I would choose one of the UDFAs listed above.

As for the players whom Reuter mocked to us, I would not consider any of them at those particular spots (except for James Connor, but we no longer have 163).

Brissett to the Browns for the #52.

Just a "report" (rumor) that I read yesterday. I thought it was amusing and decided to propagate it for S & G.

More likely to be Butler I would think.

Although I'm sure we'll always disagree on this (and that's okay), "draft status" doesn't mean anything to me and I doubt it means anything to BB. For me, once a player is acquired by the Pats (by whatever means), the only thing that matters is how well he performs. What round he was originally drafted in becomes irrelevant.

That said, "draft status" certainly DOES seem to mean quite a bit to some other teams. I lived in the Detroit area for about 50 years and it was very clear that the Lions would frequently give their high draft picks the game snaps while leaving superior players on the bench who were drafted later. It was also pretty clearly an ego thing on the part of the ownership/front office.

For example, on the Lions - at least the Lions of my past, local experience - Malcolm Butler would never, ever have become a starter. The owner/GM would have insisted on sticking with their 1st-round CB even if he sucked.

----------
During the lead up to previous drafts - when the Pats have had 1st/2nd round picks and/or more picks, people like Pioli have said that their draft boards have included 125-150 prospects (still lower than most teams). So, the lower number this year may simply reflect a focus on a limited number of positions due to having fewer and only much later opportunities. I mean, it seems possible to me that the Pats are focused exclusively on DE/LB and OL with their first 3-4 picks this year. Given the prospects that will likely remain available to them by #72, that may realistically be only 50-75 prospects who have the potential and who seem to fit.

----------
I'll confess that I was disappointed when the Pats failed to draft McClellin, Sheard and Ealy when they had the opportunity. I thought they were all potentially great fits at the time. It seems possible now that the Pats may have agreed, but that the timing didn't coincide with their priorities of the moment, and/or they knew more than I did about the abilities of the players that were already on the roster and what schemes they wanted/needed to be able to deploy that season and the subsequent couple of seasons.

Nink is a prime example. Even three years after he became a starter, many people on fan boards like this were still desperately clamoring for him to be replaced by a "superior talent" from the 1st or 2nd round. And yet, here we are, four SB appearances and two trophies later, after a few of those "superior talents" have come and gone.

Also, just because the Pats didn't acquire a player as a rooking doesn't mean that they were ignoring him or stopped tracking him. The draft is merely ONE method of player acquisition, and it should be fairly clear by now that the Pats' personnel department maintains an up-to-date dossier on literally thousands of players and college prospects.

---------
Again, our judgements as fans/amateurs about which prospects are "superior/inferior" are based on a minuscule amount of information compared to what the Pats have about the prospects themselves and about the Pats own plans. Their scouting department didn't just start paying attention to/watching tape on all these guys in the past year or so. I'd guess that they've been following at least a few of them since high school.

None of this means that they're "perfect" by any stretch. They DO seems to take many risks with draft selections that, in retrospect, were obvious mistakes - there was no "reward" there after all. This seems especially the case with the "injury-prone" prospect who they've taken in the 2nd (Wheatley, Dowling). OTOH, they've also taken risks that have worked out.

The bottom line for me is that we simply don't know anywhere near as much as we think we know.

With only six draft picks, maybe this is a year that the Patriots spend a little
extra time and resources looking over the undrafted players. Last year, they
ended up with D. J. Foster, Jonathan Jones, and Woodrow Hamilton. Cornerback
LeBlanc and tight end Williams ended up with other teams.

I think they have. My list of prospects with whom the Pats are reported to have had public pre-draft contact is a little over a hundred long. Probably half of those are likely 7th round/UDFA.

"Day-4" should be huge fun this year.

Hinting at Butler for 42 perhaps?

It wouldn't surprise me if a) there's a surprise trade partner and B) whether a straight up 2nd round pick will be too much.

They may need to if they really want Basham.

I'd have a tough time trading Butler straight up for Basham, but I suppose considering their respective contracts, going for a young pass rusher with upside is a good idea.

Maybe I'm buying into the hype and potential misdirection but I'm expecting a safety. Unless it's Melifonwu, I hope I'm wrong.

I'd be expecting Basham or an OT. I'm not even certain that safety is in the cards for the Pats, unless they can squeeze Hill in somewhere later. Or unless it's Melifonwu.

I suspect that Melifonwu will be long gone by the mid-2nd, though.

Me, too.

I have a tough time thinking that the Pats will trade Butler at all now.

Also, I've beginning to lose my certainty that the Pats will be double-dipping, early and later, for an athletic on-the-line edge rusher. I'm thinking now that another pocket-deforming 5-tech(ish) prospect (Walker, Wise) might be more appropriate, along with a couple more OLB-types (Anderson, Rivers, Ekuban), and along with an OT, if they can wrangle one (Johnson, Garcia, Davenport), as well as a CB prospect for potential 2018 starter in case Butler/Solder walk next year.

I think maybe, aside from a 5-tech and/or LB who could be 2017 contributors of moderate significance, the rest of this draft for the Pats could be about pre-emptively filling potential 2018 holes in order to help ensure the likelihood of a 3rd consecutive SB trophy.

There's been some fairly serious Marcus Maye speculation. And let's not forget there was supposedly serious interest in Su'a Cravens last year.
