It's time to test your true draftnik mettle! In this most un-Patriotlike offseason, can you predict what BB, Caserio & co. do with the tattered remnants of their draft capital? The rules, as always, are simple:

The Patriots have 7 draft picks. Name 7 players you think they might choose. The most hits wins.

That's it. Choose any strategy you like: a straight 7-pick mock, a position-independent lineup of 3-cone all-stars, or, following last year's sort-of-winning strategy, 7 guys named Jones. Then submit your your ballot to this thread, IN THIS FORMAT:

George Kittle, TE, Iowa

(All parts of it, please, and spelling counts. If I search the thread for picks of Joe Mathis and you typed Matthis, as in the title of a recent thread on this very board, you're out of luck.)

This contest is always deceptively tricky. Last year we had 11 shots at the brass ring, and nobody hit on more than one. But this year the Pats have added a little extra spice by having no picks in the first two rounds -- or so it seems. Regardless, the contest is being set at 7 choices, and even if a last-minute trade gives them the Saints' entire draft board, at 7 it will remain.

This isn't going to be easy, folks. And so I'll repeat my yearly offer: if the winner manages to hit 3+ picks I'll compose a victory ode in his or her honor.

I'm still salty that I changed two of my answers several years ago before I posted. I got two that year, but would have had four correct answers if I'd only had the guts to stick to my original thoughts. This year, I highly doubt I'm going to get m(any?) right, but I'm going to enter the contest in a few days anyway. Let me mull it over and make a new post when the time comes.

Thanks @patchick for always running this contest. It's a highlight of my draft season year in and year out! :)

Josh Johnson S BC
Vince Biegel LB Wisc
Jermaine Eluemenor OL TX AM
Fred Ross WR Miss St
DeMarcus Walker DE FSU
Desmond King S/CB Iowa
Andreas Knappe OT Uconn

My daughter has reviewed the prospects' names and declared these seven the best:

Corn Elder, CB, Miami
Forrest Lamp, OG, Western Kentucky
Jeremy Sprinkle, TE, Arkansas
John Johnson, S, Boston College
Tanzel Smart, DT, Tulane
KD Cannon, WR, Baylor
Channing Stribling, CB, Michigan

(don't discount her methods...she was the only one on the whole board to pick Vincent Valentine last year)

I remember that! I was impressed by her instincts. I am not impressed, however, at her name game this year: where's Taco Charlton? Fish Smithson? How can she pass up the chance at fish tacos with a side of corn??? ;)

She felt that there weren't a lot of complete prospects in this year's class. A guy might have what it takes in the first name or surname department, but not the total package. (Corn Elder is one happy exception.)

Gillislee, Butler, Jason McCourty. So many variables.

And Solder not having an extension.

When making a mock for the Pats, I tend to give more weight to prospects who the Pats have publicly scouted. But, so many of those guys seem likely to be off the board by #72 - especially at the positions that I feel are thin for this year and next - that I'm filling in that pick (and #96 to some extent) with guys I think fit the Pats but with whom they've had NO public contact (or, none that's been reported so far, at least).

Plus, I've been thinking that the Pats first three picks might even be DE/LB/DE. But if suitable prospects simply aren't there anymore, do the Pats go OT/RB/TE (or something weird like that)?

I don't think there's enough beer on the entire planet to keep me from overthinking this one.

Jake Butt, TE, Michigan
David Webb, QB, California
Ryan Anderson, OLB, Alabama
Wayne Gallman, RB, Clemson
Ben Gedeon, ILB, Michigan
Cameron Sutton, CB, Tennessee
Will Holden, OT, Vanderbilt

Yeah, but no Weston Steelhammer. What's she thinking of? Also, no Jake Butt means you've brought her up well.

Alas, neither Fish Smithson nor Weston Steelhammer made it onto the list of 250 prospects she was working off of. Worthy contenders both.

I like to think of the fish smith wielding his mighty steelhammer to forge a fish.

All hail the mighty fish smith.

By the by, this is fast becoming one of my favourite posts of the year. As soon as I start looking at the 2018 board, my first thought is likely to be "what will Patchick's daughter think".

I was going to wait until after the weekend, but why bother. At best I'm only going to get one right anyway. Here goes.

1. Harvey Langi, LB, BYU
2. Daeshon Hall, DE, Texas A&M
3. Delano Hill, S, Michigan
4. Obi Melifonwu, S, UConn
5. James Onwualu, LB, Notre Dame
6. Jeremy Sprinkle, TE, Arkansas
7. Samson Ebukam, LB, Eastern Washington
