10 Biggest Super Bowl Chokes in NFL History

XLVI doesn't belong on this list. Put XXXVII in its place. XLIX doesn't belong anywhere near top 2. I would argue it shouldn't even be on the list either.

Understandable to choose LI at the top as it's hard to resist recency bias but I don't think anything tops the Wide Right game. How is that at #6?

what an awful list!

-Getting outplayed doesn't mean that you choked.
-Having key bad matchups, despite having a better record, doesn't mean that you choked.

Choking means bucking in to the pressure, doing abnormal things, making stupid boneheaded mistakes, turnovers, bizarre play calls, and in general playing like you didn't even deserve to be there.

Look, if the fact that that the top 4 (I didn't get any further since getting #1-4 took a little over a week) involved the Patriots didn't give you a hint about the author's agenda, I'm not sure what to tell you...

IDK - the pic of a bewildered Russell Wilson with Big Vince celebrating in the background is kind of awesome.

The narrative for XLIX is pretty silly. OMG WURST PLAYCALL EVAR! Uh, if Brady doesn't lead two TD drives to erase a 10-point deficit the last Seattle drive doesn't matter. Pete was simply trying to catch the D off-guard with the quick slant with our D in goal-line run. If it succeeds it's one of the most brilliant calls ever.

Super Bowl LI took both teams to end the way it did. Atlanta with awful playcalls down the stretch and the Pats taking advantage of it. A lot of folks don't realize that NE still had to execute and make plays. Not the Pats' fault the failcons D couldn't make any plays late.

So let's get this straight.

1. LI - Atlanta should have won
2. XLIX - Seattle should have won
3. XLII - Patriots should have won
4. XXXVI - The Rams should have won
9. XLVI - The Patriots should have won

The Pats only won when the other team choked but lost when they choked. Got it.

People forget SB36 was kind of the biggest Super Bowl comeback prior to SB51. We heard how the biggest SB comeback was 11 points, but the Rams came back from 14 down in SB36 to tie it in the 4th quarter.

Objectively speaking that's a reasonably impressive accomplishment, but fortunately for us Thomas Brady had the last word so they don't get credit for the comeback.

I'm surprised they didn't put Eagles and Panthers choking as well in XXXVIII and XXXIX

So with this list alone they are insinuating that 20% of the superbowls were "chokes"

Ok then. I guess the term is used relatively loosely. SB36, 42, and 46, were not chokes. They were good physical games. The patriots earned 36 just like the giants earned 42. 46 on the other hand just sucked, Patriots didn't show up to play.

SB49 wasn't a "choke"
Denver choked against Seattle, obviously.
Falcons choked, clearly.

Anything for clickbait. Just because the team that "should have won" didn't doesn't mean it was a choke. Stupid. I regret my 10 clicks.
