2017 Draft Prospect Thread

PFF list some players they think will be good day 3 picks for the Pats. Nathan Gerry, Deatrich Wise, George Kittle are on their but they do have a nme I've not heard of before:

I looked at his pro day numbers and whilst his 40 is OK at 4.54, his shuttle was a very good 4.05 and he had a 6.83 3-cone. Interesting UDFA possibility.

I hadn't heard of Murray until today and then this popped up on my timeline. Nice.

Thanks. Nice to see 4 of my guys on such a list. Gerry, Wise, Kittle and Stribling all have one thing I look for - great attitude. Or as BB likes it: tough, smart, dependable..

I need to take a look at Gerry and Stribling. Re Gerry, I'm so locked in on Delano Hill, I hadn't thought about him.

Hill or Gerry is real possibility.
You'll enjoy Gerry. Chung w nose for interceptions.
Made of stone.

Watch also this game and look for #25.
Brian Hill vs Nebraska (2016) | Draft Breakdown

Most people say this draft is deepest @CB and edge.
Id go for safety. You don't have so many quality prospects (size+athleticism+production) like Hill, Gerry, Nicholson, also Thompson, Nacua, Luani.. at the bottom or even outside the draft.

We should definitely not sleep on Luani:

currently connected to Seattle of course..

Mentioned Luani a while ago, he's a real headhunter. His highlight real is a whole bunch of fun.

And while we're on the safety subject - possibly the biggest sleeper and greatest late round/UDFA prospect is David Jones.

Versatile, tough, smart, mature, athletic, playmaker, all-around football player. The only Q is if he can stay on the field. 2 arm injuries seem to hurt his “stock“ (currently projected priority UDFA) but I would not be surprised if some team has him way up.

I don't care too much for highlights but there's not much film on him & this is a nice clip overall - so here:

The only full game on Draftbreakdown is from 2015:

Had a good Pro Day (excellent speed) and worked out all the drills incl. bench despite rehabbing from second arm injury.

Id love to have this young man on my team..
___

Here a nice article on him - he's being honest in difficult situation:
The Collegian :: David Jones overcomes injury to pursue his NFL dream

Quote:

“He is really smart and he watched more film than anybody.“

Jones has been preparing for the draft by working out, watching film and doing rehab for his arm at EXOS in Frisco, Texas.

“We work out Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays twice a day, and Tuesdays and Thursdays we work out three times a day, and on Saturdays we work out once in the morning,” Jones said. “You could be sitting around at the house and the next man is working out, watching film, getting better, so you have to keep that in mind to keep you going.”

__

This from another Q&A:
NFL Draft Diamonds Prospect Interview: David Jones, DB, University of RIchmond

What will be the first big item you buy once you are in the NFL?

Anything that will help with recovery or preventative for injuries (norma tech boots, Cryo, hot/cold tub). I took some words of advice from a few veterans who suggested to take care of your body once you first get into the league. After a few years, once you are settled in with a secure job, then buy a car, house, jewelry, etc.

_

And how's this for an honest answer:

Do you have any pre-game rituals?

No matter who I play or what level I play on, I always puke before the game to get the nerves out. I can never control it. It just happens.

Bill Russell - the most successful player in American sports history - used to puke before games too; the bigger the game, the more likely he would puke before it.

Our own Bill really, really needs to hit the UDFA market hard. No ****y-footing around either; pay the best players available at positions in need of re-filling more money than the other guys are offering.

Useful numbers and I agree no RB will average 20 carries a game over the course of a season, we have Tom F'in Brady with more weapons then the US military. We are a pass first team and for good reason. What I meant was there are going to be games where the game plan calls for smash mouth football and in those games where is the 20 carry back? Right now we have Burk. If he went down I don't trust white or Lewis in that role and I would hate not to be able to run any kind of offense that best takes advantage of the defenses weakness.

My original point to Manx, whose opinion I value highly, was the plan B at RB is significantly weaker right now then the plan B at WR. If Edelman went down we still have cooks or vice versa. If Burk goes down we are signing someone off the street or promoting Gaffney off the PS. I also find RB to be the one position that is almost entirely athletic talent and instinct, you either can or you can't and even rookie RB's can be very effective. If Blount signs soon and Bill chooses to allocate his resources elsewhere I won't argue with it but I think adding some young blood to the running game is a higher tier need then a receiver that won't crack the line up for 2 or 3 years.

Those smash-mouth, ground games are few and far between (mostly because we don't play the Colts very often - tee-hee). Also, I'd guess that considerably more than 50% of the Pats' ground game effectiveness is due to the blockers - OL, Develin, TEs and even WRs. So, the Pats typically manage to put up pretty good ground game stats even with 2nd-tier (or even lesser) RBs.

The exceptions, of course, were 2014 and 2015, when (besides a horrible run of injuries) someone other than Scar was coaching the OL.

While I also would like to see the Pats draft a decent between-the-tackles RB for the future - especially since it seems like there will be a few within range in the draft - it's not a huge priority for me. But then, neither is WR.

Again, I agree that, one way or another, having another BTT-capable RB on the roster to backup Burkhead seems like a must (BTW - Gaffney was released weeks ago).

I also agree about the potential of Burkhead being a one-and-gone player, but I don't think the Pats will stretch the budget anywhere near as far as $5M per year to keep him no matter how good he looks in 2016.

I just had the same thought today . Day 4 of the Draft will be a blood bath.
Loads of good prospects after 253.

On one board all these guys are projected UDFAs:
RB DE'VEON SMITH, DE'ANGELO HENDERSON, JAHAD THOMAS, J HURD
WR MACK HOLLINS, JEHU CHESSON, QUINCY ADEBOYEJO, BUG HOWARD
TE PHARAOH BROWN, CETHAN CARTER
ED AL-QUADIN MUHAMMAD, NOBLE NWACHUKWU
LB JALEN REEVES-MAYBIN, JAMES ONWUALU, JORDAN EVANS
S DELANO HILL, NATE GERRY, KAI NACUA, DALLAS LLOYD
OT SAM TEVI
CB SHAQUILL GRIFFIN, JACK TOCHO
DL STEVIE TU'IKOLOVATU

And that's only from Pats perspective . with some binkies not even on the board like:
LB Langi, LB Wilson, LB Calitro, RB Ogunbowale, RB LeShun Daniels, RB Crossan, RB Mays, RB Henderson, WR Carr, WR Gentry, WR Yancey, WR McCarron, WR Staples, WR Dieter, TE Croom, TE Auclair, OT Ugokwe, OT Rich, OT Seaton, OT Salako, OT Knappe, DL Ricard, DL Butler, DT Meyers, NT Tuiloma, DE Schwan, ED Vereen, ED Odenigbo, CB Allen, CB Myrick, CB DeAndrade, CB Murray, CB Watson, S Luani, S D Thomas, S McQuay, ST Thompson .. and the above mentioned S David Jones

many of them already had contacts with NE.

no wonder Bill's throwing picks away..

This kid is shaping up to be quite the talent for a 5th-7th round QB.

What's your take?

Pumped we might have an outside shot at Rivers? 1st for me. Nuanced pass rusher that could make an impact day one imo.

Don't see Rivers as a great fit. Undersized and attacks the edge rather than the lineman. Not really the Pats MO of late. I'm much more on the Basham bandwagon.

Should have been more clear.

Was asking what's your take on the article.

I get what you're saying about Rivers but his hands are up there with Mathis, Lawson etc. Always high, above eyes. Strong and always active. Can put speed to power.

He'll bulk up some but it might be nice to have a pure pass rusher, that can also play the run, to add with the tornadoes that are Flowers (binkie) and Ealy?

There's no doubt Rivers is a good player, I just think he's a departure is all. Even Mark Anderson was 255lb and he seems like the closest fit the Pats have had to Rivers in a long time. I wouldn't object to a pass rushing specialist however.

As for the article, I'm in a 'just sit back and enjoy the first two rounds mode' atm. That would change with a Butler/JG trade naturally. The news about Charles Harris (top 15), Jamil Adams (might slip) and Jordan Willis (first rounder) was the most interesting to me.

Two thoughts.

1. Have been thinking about Patchick's annual draft game today and who my guesses would be. There are two factors that could seriously affect the choices though. A) If we sign Blount before the draft, that would affect taking a RB in the draft. 2) If we sign Jason McCourty, then I'd take CB off the board.

2. With so few numbers on a potential 90 man roster, I'm really looking forward to 'day 4' of the draft, the UDFA signings. I really enjoy that anyway but the potential to sign quite a few and the depth of the draft, it could be even more potent this year.

Bear with me a moment and assume Burk puts up 2012 Ridley numbers, which in this offense running against 6 in the box cuz of Brady any above average back should be able to do with 250 carries, 1200 yards 10 TD's. What would you pay for that kind of production? Because of the mentioned Brady effect I would offer a 4 year 20 million deal. You really think there isn't a desperate team out there that wouldn't go 4 for 28 or 5 for 35? That is why Burk wanted a one year deal IMO he is betting big time on himself on a loaded offense. He's still young without a ton of wear and tear so I could see one huge year as the featured back translating to a decent but not record setting contract with someone else.
Teams wernt willing to pay running backs this off season, I don't know why you would think they would do it next off season.
